Harm is a moral and legal concept.
Bernard Gert construes harms as any of the following:
Joel Feinberg gives an account of harms as setbacks to interests. He distinguishes welfare interests from ulterior interests. Hence on his view there are two kinds of harms.
Welfare interests are
Ulterior interests are "a person's more ultimate goals and aspirations," such as "producing good novels or works of art, solving a crucial scientific problem, achieving high political office, successfully raising a family . . .".

In some parts of the world, it's easier to get an automatic rifle than a glass of clean drinking water. Is this just the way it is? Samantha Nutt, doctor and founder of the international humanitarian organization War Child, explores the global arms trade — and suggests a bold, common sense solution for ending the cycle of violence. "War is ours," she says. "We buy it, sell it, spread it and wage it. We are therefore not powerless to solve it." http://www.gellerandsiegel.com New York medical malpractice attorney and senior litigating partner Andy Siegel explains how a brain injury can affect your senses like taste and smell. When a head injury is sustained, this may cause harm to the part of the brain that controls and understands how your senses communicate. Your brain is unable to interpret tastes and smells in the correct way. Through a basal view of the brain, we can show how these nerves are compromised and someone can suffer the lost of senses. The loss of these senses is usually temporary, but can be permanent based on your injury. Watch the video now to learn more. Las Vegas police arrested a man Sunday after a toddler in his care went to a hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. Craig J. Dickens, 34, faces two counts of child abuse with substantial bodily harm. Dickens is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $20,000 bail. At 2:40 a.m., police responded to reports that an 18-month-old had fallen out of bed and suffered serious injuries at Siegel Suites. The child was taken to Sunrise hospital. Detectives said the explanation offered by Dickens did not account for the severity of the child’s injuries. The relationship between the child and the man was unclear. A neighbor said she reported possible abuse to security at Siegel Suites in July after overhearing “blood-curdling screams” of a child.
We've seen that what we perceive and remember is literally shaped by our experiences and expectations. The placebo effect is another example of this phenomenon. Symptoms improve with treatments that have no active ingredients. We introduce several reasons for this effect along with beliefs that "natural" is better, and perceived risks of vaccination. Why are long-time anti-smoking advocates like Stanton Glantz and organizations like the Centers for Disease Control marshaling forces to eradicate vaping? Why do they reject the scientific opinion of colleagues in the public health movement that believe e-cigarettes could be the ‘endgame’ strategy to beat the tobacco epidemic? Dr. Michael Siegel, professor at Boston University School of Public Health and tobacco control expert has an answer—public health officials are suffering from ‘cognitive dissonance’ leading to an irrational reaction to the life saving potential of e-cigarettes. As a result, he says the public debate has been poisoned by “lies, misinformation and mischaracterizations” promulgated by the public health movement. I present statistical proof that clearly shows that you are more likely to die or be brain damaged from most vaccines than you are to actually die from the disease itself. Here is the data I have collected, mainly from NNii who actually promote vaccines! The data does not lie... REAL STATISTICS, not funny photos: MMR VACCINE ADVERSE REACTIONS - taken from NNii (http://www.immunizationinfo.org/vaccines/mumps) 1 child out of 10,000 given MMR), children have a serious reaction, such as lowered consciousness, coma. 1 child out of 1,000,000 given measles vaccine, children have developed encephalitis 6-15 days after vaccination (this means permanent brain damage i.e. a vegetable.) Compare this to: Risk of death from Mumps: "The cumulative risk of death to a child over the first five years o...

Naropa University's Radical Compassion Symposium Presents "Mindsight and Neural Integration: How Kindness and Compassion Shape Our Relationships and Our Brains" with Dan Siegel, MD Dr. Dan Siegel offers insights from the field of interpersonal neurobiology and discusses the power of mindsight to promote compassion, kindness and well-being in our personal lives, our relationships and our communities. "Mindsight" is the ability to perceive our own mind, and that of others, thus freeing us from habitual, reactive patterns. At the neurological level, mindsight has been shown to promote the growth of integrative fibers in the brain. Neural integration – the linkage between differentiated aspects of the brain - allows for flexibility and adaptability, and expresses itself outwardly as harmony, ...

October 30, 2015 What's the Harm? Understanding Reproductive Injustice Panel 1: Harm to Law This panel will explore how recent abortion jurisprudence threatens to distort other constitutional principles, including liberty, dignity, and precedent. For example, in considering the constitutionality of mandatory ultrasound laws, some courts have been tempted to overlook First Amendment protections and instead base their opinions wholly on Planned Parenthood v. Casey’s undue burden standard. In the recent Texas case challenging targeted regulation of abortion providers (“TRAP” laws), the 5th Circuit has gone so far as to imply that judicial review should amount to a rubber stamp, with little concern for the factual basis underlying the state’s purported interest in women’s health. This panel ...
The Delta Pulse, Model PEMF-100 device, is an innovative, high intensity, very low frequency pulsed electromagnetic field generator. It is one of the most intense clinically useful electromagnetic devices available. The maximum field intensity is around 1920 Gauss (192 mT). The lowest field intensity is still likely close to 1000 Gauss. Because of its cost, it is likely to be most often used in the clinical professional environment. On the other hand, because of the field intensities it may have great applicability for the home self treatment of a variety of clinical conditions. Historically, there have been other high-intensity magnetic systems similar to the PEMF-100 device, retailing for around double the cost. Therefore, given the high intensities involved, the PEMF-100 pricing is very...

Through the work of his nonprofit organization, the Chicago Recovery Alliance, Dan Bigg has helped save thousands of lives from drug overdose. Bigg, personally, has saved at least six. One night a few years ago, for example, Bigg was doing outreach work with a group of intravenous drug users in their apartment in Chicago when he noticed that a striking young woman in her 30s had become ashen. Her breathing had slowed dangerously. Her friends said that she had taken heroin. Brushing aside their objections that he would tear her designer clothes — the woman “looked like a fashion model,” according to Bigg — or bring her down too hard from her high, he injected her with an overdose antidote called naloxone and instantly restored her breathing to normal. A few weeks later, she called him to sa...
