John Butler stages surprise free gig at Freo markets

John Butler has returned to his bluesy roots by staging an apparently impromptu performance at the Fremantle Markets.
Butler turned up about midday at the busy market and sat on a crate to ply his trade, according to the market's Facebook page.

Fans loved the minimalist approach, flooding the post with appreciative comments such as "Another reason Fremantle will always be home" and "must be time for a beer in Freo".
"Legend and with his $10 jeans on too," pointed out one observer.

Butler's band the John Butler Trio has recorded seven studio albums since forming in Fremantle nearly two decades ago, releasing their latest,  Ocean, on vinyl last year.
Their gigs, in Perth, on Australia's east coast and overseas, regularly sell out.
