The 2nd Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas Project

Project Coordinators Bill Mueller and Mike Reese teamed up to present an update on the “2nd Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas Project” at the Aldo Leopold Audubon Society’s program on Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 at the Lincoln Center, 1519 Water Street in Stevens Point.
The original Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas, published in 2006 by the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, is a 600-page volume that documents the distribution and abundance of birds breeding in the state. Earlier this year, field work and data collection commenced for the Atlas 2 project, which will provide insight regarding changes in bird populations since the original survey and help identify conservation needs of breeding birds.
Mueller and Reese described the history of Atlas 1 (it included more than 1,600 observers, 160,000 field records, 70,000 hours in the field), a chronology of activities and most important findings, and the ways in which Atlas 2 is different. They showed the results from the first year of work on Atlas 2, including which species have been confirmed, where the work of Atlas 2 has been focused, how many people have become involved and how more people can become a part of the project. By the time Atlas 2 is complete, it will be the largest citizen science project in the history of Wisconsin.

Eagle-Lion released this little film noir gem in May 1948 and Gaumont -Eagle Lion released it in France in 1949, and runs 79 minutes in black and white. Britain really caught the film noir bug, producing many seldom seen gems like this. Eagle bought the old PRC poverty row studio ( Formerly Grand National Pictures ), where this was made, and was producing American "B" movies to accompany their British releases here, and increase the draw. The great Anthony Mann directs this taut thriller with a cast including Dennis O'Keefe, Clair Trevor, Marsha Hunt, John Ireland, Raymond Burr, Curt Conway, Regis Toomey, and Whit Bissell.
Inmate Joe Sullivan ( O'Keefe ) crashes out of prison with the help of his moll, Pat ( Trevor ). Unbeknownst to the pair, they have been set up by Rick Coyle ( Burr ), a sadistic pyromaniac who owes Joe $ 50,000, but Joe is not killed as expected. While on the lam, Joe kidnaps his beautiful social worker, Ann ( Hunt ), which begins a smoldering love triangle. Rick kidnaps Ann to blackmail Joe to deal with him. An interesting twist ending. Hauntingly narrated by Claire Trevor, the film sports eerie mood music and excellent photography by John Alton. This highly stylized sleeper is worth the time.

Atlas
An atlas is a collection of maps; it is typically a map of Earth or a region of Earth, but there are atlases of the other planets (and their satellites) in the Solar System. Furthermore, atlases of anatomy exist, mapping out the human body or other organisms. Atlases have traditionally been bound into book form, but today many atlases are in multimedia formats. In addition to presenting geographic features and political boundaries, many atlases often feature geopolitical, social, religious and economic statistics. They also have information about the map and places in it.
Etymology
The word atlas dates from 1636, first in reference to the English translation of Atlas, sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi (1585) by Flemish geographer Gerhardus Mercator, who might have been the first to use this word in this way. A picture of the Titan Atlas holding up the world appeared on the frontispiece of this and other early map collections.
History
The first work that contained systematically arranged woodcut maps of uniform size, intended to be published in a book, thus representing the first modern atlas, was De Summa totius Orbis (1524–26) by the 16th-century Italian cartographer Pietro Coppo. Nonetheless, this distinction is conventionally awarded to the Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius who in 1570 published the collection of maps Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.

Earlier this year, field work and data collection commenced for the Atlas 2 project, which will provide insight regarding changes in bird populations since the original survey and help identify conservation needs of breeding birds.
Mueller and Reese described the history of Atlas 1 (it included more than 1,600 observers, 160,000 field records, 70,000 hours in the field), a chronology of activities and most important findings, and the ways in which Atlas 2 is different. They showed the results from the first year of work on Atlas 2, including which species have been confirmed, where the work of Atlas 2 has been focused, how many people have become involved and how more people can become a part of the project. By the time Atlas 2 is complete, it will be the largest citizen science project in the history of Wisconsin.

Britain really caught the film noir bug, producing many seldom seen gems like this. Eagle bought the old PRC poverty row studio ( Formerly Grand National Pictures ), where this was made, and was producing American "B" movies to accompany their British releases here, and increase the draw. The great Anthony Mann directs this taut thriller with a cast including Dennis O'Keefe, Clair Trevor, Marsha Hunt, John Ireland, Raymond Burr, Curt Conway, Regis Toomey, and Whit Bissell.
Inmate Joe Sullivan ( O'Keefe ) crashes out of prison with the help of his moll, Pat ( Trevor ). Unbeknownst to the pair, they have been set up by Rick Coyle ( Burr ), a sadistic pyromaniac who owes Joe $ 50,000, but Joe is not killed as expected. While on the lam, Joe kidnaps his beautiful social worker, Ann ( Hunt ), which begins a smoldering love triangle. Rick kidnaps Ann to blackmail Joe to deal with him. An interesting twist ending. Hauntingly narrated by Claire Trevor, the film sports eerie mood music and excellent photography by John Alton. This highly stylized sleeper is worth the time.
