Most Dangerous Construction In the World: Mponeng Gold Mine (Discovery Channel)
Mponeng is a gold mine in South Africa's North West Province. It extends over 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) below the surface, and is considered to be one of the most substantial gold mines in the world.[2] It is also currently the world's deepest mine. The trip from the surface to the bottom of the mine takes over an hour.
Over 5400 metric tonnes of rock are excavated from Mponeng each day.[1] At a cost of $19.4 per gram of gold extracted, the mine needs to recover only 10 grams of gold per ton excavated to remain profitable. The mine contains at least two gold reefs, with the deepest one metre thick.
The temperature of the rock reaches 66 °C (151 °F), and the mine pumps slurry ice underground to cool the tunnel air below 30 °C (86 °F). A mixture of concrete, water, and rock is packed into excavated areas, which further acts as an insulator. Tunnel walls are secured by flexible shotcrete reinforced with steel fibers, which is further held in place by diamond-mesh netting.
The endemic bacterium Desulforudis audaxviator was discovered within groundwater samples.

AngloGold Ashanti's Mponeng mine is located in Gauteng province of South Africa. It is mined to an average depth of 2,800m-3,400m below surface and is one of the world's deepest and richest gold mines with grades at over 8g/t. It is one of three AngloGold projects in the West Witts area apart from Savuka and TauTona mines. The name means 'look at me' in the local Sotho language.
Formerly the Western Deep Levels South Shaft, or Shaft No 1, Mponeng is the most recently sunk of the three former Western Deep Levels mines. Sinking of Mponeng shafts began in 1981, and the main shaft was completed in 1986, with the subshaft completed in 1993.

Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. I ask myself 'what will happen to all of us?'"
