Matthew "Matt" Mann II (1884–1962) was a British-born American college swimming coach and was coach of the men's swim team in the 1952 Summer Olympics that won four gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.
He learnt to swim at eight in his hometown of Leeds, England at the public bath house. He could afford to swim there once a week, on 'dirty water days', when it only cost a penny. Otherwise, he swam in the outdoor sluiceways that drained from the wool mills.
He became England's boy champion at 9 and a senior champion at 14. In his early 20s, he emigrated penniless to North America, with his International Swimming Hall of Fame biography stating:
Matt emigrated steerage to the USA, was stopped at Ellis Island for insufficient funds, shipped to Toronto in a sealed railroad car with $2.00 left in his pocket. Walking down Yonge Street, he found a room for $1.00 a week, then bought a week's meal tickets in a bean wagon for his other dollar. "I was on top of the world," said Matt. "I had no money but my needs were taken care of and I had a whole week to look for a job."

Accordingly, the producers insist that no one try to recreate or re-enact any stunt or activity performed in this film. We've admired the pioneering work of Wim Hof for years now from afar. This January however we got an opportunity to spend four days with him in the mountains of Poland. We didn't know what to expect. We had no idea that Wim was at a place in his life where he wanted to push his findings to the next level....we had no clue that we were his experiments in proving just how powerful the mind is. What do you want to do tonight
Brush shoulders with the end of life?
Not on purpose, of course,
That way we won't feel remorse.
Let's go and toy with some minds;
Theirs, not ours - that will kill some time.
Maybe we'll pass with it and be left behind
Not on purpose, of course.
My friend rang the doorbell two or three times.
Wee awaited in anticipation for the door to open...
Finally opening, a tall, lanky creature stumbled from the
darkness;
With its left paw, it opened the screen door, slowly revealing
a handgun in the other.
Aiming the gun between my eyes, I starred down the barrel;
The black metal shimmered in the moonlight.
Mumbling something about us not being wanted there, the
Creature gave the impression of drunkenness;
It's arms stiffened while cocking the gun.
Am I sick of this world?
Do I value this life?
Why do we live
Eagerly waiting the outcome, the trigger was pulled...
The gun was empty.
I stood there, smiling, letting the event slip out of thought
almost instantly.
Fear was never present.
