Subscribe for new videos every week. My house has pretty boring windows. A little because of the architecture of the house and a little because of the fact that I hate curtains. So we just have 2” wide blinds in all of our windows. All of the blinds were left by the previous owners of the house and it looks like they were installed at different times through the years as most of them are of different styles and manufacturers. Luckily the major differences are only noticeable at the tops of the blinds. To cover these unsightly blinds I thought about making painted window cornices.

This project was very easy to do with any window. You can even remove the straight pins and reuse the fabric on something else and then change the fabric if you needed to. THAD: A valance is a simple upgrade you can do to cover up this track, because you can wrap it with some decorative fabric and really punch some color into the room. What we need to do first is take these measurements and find out just how far we need to come off of the wall to be able to return down and give us that nice finished face.
Our measurements will be 5 inches; our next measurement that we want is on this track, fifty-two and three-quarters. Okay, forty-eight and five-eighths...So let's start by making a five-inch mark here and a five-inch mark down at the bottom, and then we're gonna use this snap line to establish a straight line for you to cut down the whole length of this plywood.
GLENN: Alright.
THAD: You pull it really tight so there's no slack in the line, and then somewhere in the middle you pull up on the line, straight up, release it and it snaps on the wood. You got a nice established line on there...Now we'll follow that line with a skill saw.
GLENN: Safety first.
THAD: You're ready to rock and roll. (GLENN begins to saw.) Nicely done, all right! Let's take these long pieces and cut two shorter pieces out of these...Let it rip!
GLENN: Here you go, sir.
THAD: Nicely done.
GLENN: Thank you...Alright, we're ready to roll.
THAD: So our four-inch piece stacks on top of the five-inch piece because this is our finished top, right here. You'll throw a little bead of glue on there, and we'll stack this four-inch piece on top of it. So we're gonna screw in using inch-and-a-half screws...'Kay one last one, nice!...So these two pieces will fit together like that. Now that these two pieces are put together, let's put caps on the end of them, and then we'll take them inside and actually put them up on the wall.
Now we see how those two come together and lap on each other and make that nice joint there...So let's secure them to the wall using these L-brackets, right here. One screw goes into the wall, and one screw goes down into the valance.
That's a super easy way of installing something over the face of this track and giving it that fresh look. Very easy to do, and now we have a lot of options for finishing the face of this valance. We can paint it, we can play around with the other colors in the room to really accent it and play off of them, or we can cover it with fabric.
So, this is a very easy way to do a window treatment. Nice work!

You'll also see the design I came up with to make an upholstered cornice (also sometimes called a valance) that is a simple and inexpensive way to dress up the top of the window and hide the existing plastic cornice that's not so pretty. Rod pocket curtains are the easiest style of curtain to make. For sewers of all levels, these drapes are a simple project that will have high impact on the look of your space.
Fabric Used:
Waverly Pom Pom Play Spa Fabric: https://www.onlinefabricstore.net/waverly-pom-pom-play-spa-fabric-.htm
Instructions:
Materials needed:
• Drapery fabric
• Scissors or a rotary cutter and mat
• Thread
• A ruler or measuring tape
• A fabric marker or pencil
• Sewing gauge (optional)
• Iron
To determine the size to cut your fabric, take the dimensions you want your curtain panel to be and add 4” to the width and 12” to the height to account for the hems. This curtain will be 3 ft wide and 4 ft tall when finished so I’m cutting the fabric 40” wide by 60” high.
First I’m going to hem the 2 sides of the panel. Fold the edge over 1” and press. Then fold it over another inch and iron it again. Sew down the length of the panel ¾” from the edge of the fabric. Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the stitches. Repeat this for the other side of the panel.
The top hem forms the rod pocket, which should be at least twice the diameter of the curtain rod. For this curtain, I’m making a 3” double fold hem. Fold the fabric over 3” and iron. Then fold it over another 3” and press again. Sew along the bottom crease of the hem about 1/4” from the edge to form the pocket. The top can be done at this point, or you can choose to add a header, which will make the panel extend a little past the top of the curtain rod. I’m sewing 1” from the top of the panel to form a 1” header.
Finally sew the bottom hem. To make the bottom of the curtain fall exactly where you want, hang the panel first to better judge how much to hem. For this curtain, I’m ironing another 3” double fold, like for the top hem. Again sew 1/4” from the crease.

Window valance
A window valance (or pelmet in the UK) is a form of window treatment that covers the uppermost part of the window and can be hung alone or paired with window blinds, or curtains. Valances are a popular decorative choice in concealing drapery hardware. Window valances were popular in Victorian interior design. In draping or bunting form they are commonly referred to as swag.

Window valances are also called window top treatments. The earliest recorded history of interior design is rooted in the renaissance Era, a time of great change and rebirth in the world of art and architecture, and much of this time saw understated, simple treatments, eventually moving towards more elaborate fabrics of multiple layers of treatments, including, towards the end of this period, valances, swags, jabots, and pelmets. By the Baroque and early Georgian period (1643-1730), elaborate and theatrical treatments placed high emphasis on the cornice and pelmet as a way to finish off the top of a window treatment.

Subscribe for new videos every week. My house has pretty boring windows. A little because of the architecture of the house and a little because of the fact that I hate curtains. So we just have 2” wide blinds in all of our windows. All of the blinds were left by the previous owners of the house and it looks like they were installed at different times through the years as most of them are of different styles and manufacturers. Luckily the major differences are only noticeable at the tops of the blinds. To cover these unsightly blinds I thought about making painted window cornices.

THAD: A valance is a simple upgrade you can do to cover up this track, because you can wrap it with some decorative fabric and really punch some color into the room. What we need to do first is take these measurements and find out just how far we need to come off of the wall to be able to return down and give us that nice finished face.
Our measurements will be 5 inches; our next measurement that we want is on this track, fifty-two and three-quarters. Okay, forty-eight and five-eighths...So let's start by making a five-inch mark here and a five-inch mark down at the bottom, and then we're gonna use this snap line to establish a straight line for you to cut down the whole length of this plywood.
GLENN: Alright.
THAD: You pull it really tight so there's no slack in the line, and then somewhere in the middle you pull up on the line, straight up, release it and it snaps on the wood. You got a nice established line on there...Now we'll follow that line with a skill saw.
GLENN: Safety first.
THAD: You're ready to rock and roll. (GLENN begins to saw.) Nicely done, all right! Let's take these long pieces and cut two shorter pieces out of these...Let it rip!
GLENN: Here you go, sir.
THAD: Nicely done.
GLENN: Thank you...Alright, we're ready to roll.
THAD: So our four-inch piece stacks on top of the five-inch piece because this is our finished top, right here. You'll throw a little bead of glue on there, and we'll stack this four-inch piece on top of it. So we're gonna screw in using inch-and-a-half screws...'Kay one last one, nice!...So these two pieces will fit together like that. Now that these two pieces are put together, let's put caps on the end of them, and then we'll take them inside and actually put them up on the wall.
Now we see how those two come together and lap on each other and make that nice joint there...So let's secure them to the wall using these L-brackets, right here. One screw goes into the wall, and one screw goes down into the valance.
That's a super easy way of installing something over the face of this track and giving it that fresh look. Very easy to do, and now we have a lot of options for finishing the face of this valance. We can paint it, we can play around with the other colors in the room to really accent it and play off of them, or we can cover it with fabric.
So, this is a very easy way to do a window treatment. Nice work!

Want to hide your ugly vertical blinds in your small apartment? Here's a how-to guide for a DIY window valence or cornice to hide them. In this episode, you'll see what trick I used to put up curtains using the existing vertical blind hardware. You'll also see the design I came up with to make an upholstered cornice (also sometimes called a valance) that is a simple and inexpensive way to dress up the top of the window and hide the existing plastic cornice that's not so pretty. Saying goodbye to those vertical blinds felt so good and my curtains and DIY upholstered cornice/valance completely changed the look of the window, adding that much-needed touch of style and architectural detail to my apartment. Plus, it's an easy way to decorate in a small apartment on a budget!

Materials needed:

To determine the size to cut your fabric, take the dimensions you want your curtain panel to be and add 4” to the width and 12” to the height to account for the hems. This curtain will be 3 ft wide and 4 ft tall when finished so I’m cutting the fabric 40” wide by 60” high.
First I’m going to hem the 2 sides of the panel. Fold the edge over 1” and press. Then fold it over another inch and iron it again. Sew down the length of the panel ¾” from the edge of the fabric. Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the stitches. Repeat this for the other side of the panel.
The top hem forms the rod pocket, which should be at least twice the diameter of the curtain rod. For this curtain, I’m making a 3” double fold hem. Fold the fabric over 3” and iron. Then fold it over another 3” and press again. Sew along the bottom crease of the hem about 1/4” from the edge to form the pocket. The top can be done at this point, or you can choose to add a header, which will make the panel extend a little past the top of the curtain rod. I’m sewing 1” from the top of the panel to form a 1” header.
Finally sew the bottom hem. To make the bottom of the curtain fall exactly where you want, hang the panel first to better judge how much to hem. For this curtain, I’m ironing another 3” double fold, like for the top hem. Again sew 1/4” from the crease.

Want to hide your ugly vertical blinds in your small apartment? Here's a how-to guide for a DIY window valence or cornice to hide them. In this episode, you'll see what trick I used to put up curtains using the existing vertical blind hardware. You'll also see the design I came up with to make an upholstered cornice (also sometimes called a valance) that is a simple and inexpensive way to dress up the top of the window and hide the existing plastic cornice that's not so pretty. Rod pocket curtains are the easiest style of curtain to make. For sewers of all levels, these drapes are a simple project that will have high impact on the look of your space. Subscribe for new videos every week. My house has pretty boring windows. A little because of the architecture of the house and a little because of the fact that I hate curtains. So we just have 2” wide blinds in all of our windows. All of the blinds were left by the previous owners of the house and it looks like they were installed at different times through the years as most of them are of different styles and manufacturers. Luckily the major differences are only noticeable at the tops of the blinds. To cover these unsightly blinds I thought about making painted window cornices.

THAD: A valance is a simple upgrade you can do to cover up this track, because you can wrap it with some decorative fabric and really punch some color into the room. What we need to do first is take these measurements and find out just how far we need to come off of the wall to be able to return down and give us that nice finished face.
Our measurements will be 5 inches; our next measurement that we want is on this track, fifty-two and three-quarters. Okay, forty-eight and five-eighths...So let's start by making a five-inch mark here and a five-inch mark down at the bottom, and then we're gonna use this snap line to establish a straight line for you to cut down the whole length of this plywood.
GLENN: Alright.
THAD: You pull it really tight so there's no slack in the line, and then somewhere in the middle you pull up on the line, straight up, release it and it snaps on the wood. You got a nice established line on there...Now we'll follow that line with a skill saw.
GLENN: Safety first.
THAD: You're ready to rock and roll. (GLENN begins to saw.) Nicely done, all right! Let's take these long pieces and cut two shorter pieces out of these...Let it rip!
GLENN: Here you go, sir.
THAD: Nicely done.
GLENN: Thank you...Alright, we're ready to roll.
THAD: So our four-inch piece stacks on top of the five-inch piece because this is our finished top, right here. You'll throw a little bead of glue on there, and we'll stack this four-inch piece on top of it. So we're gonna screw in using inch-and-a-half screws...'Kay one last one, nice!...So these two pieces will fit together like that. Now that these two pieces are put together, let's put caps on the end of them, and then we'll take them inside and actually put them up on the wall.
Now we see how those two come together and lap on each other and make that nice joint there...So let's secure them to the wall using these L-brackets, right here. One screw goes into the wall, and one screw goes down into the valance.
That's a super easy way of installing something over the face of this track and giving it that fresh look. Very easy to do, and now we have a lot of options for finishing the face of this valance. We can paint it, we can play around with the other colors in the room to really accent it and play off of them, or we can cover it with fabric.
So, this is a very easy way to do a window treatment. Nice work!

Materials needed:
• Drapery fabric
• Scissors or a rotary cutter and mat
• Thread

To determine the size to cut your fabric, take the dimensions you want your curtain panel to be and add 4” to the width and 12” to the height to account for the hems. This curtain will be 3 ft wide and 4 ft tall when finished so I’m cutting the fabric 40” wide by 60” high.
First I’m going to hem the 2 sides of the panel. Fold the edge over 1” and press. Then fold it over another inch and iron it again. Sew down the length of the panel ¾” from the edge of the fabric. Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the stitches. Repeat this for the other side of the panel.
The top hem forms the rod pocket, which should be at least twice the diameter of the curtain rod. For this curtain, I’m making a 3” double fold hem. Fold the fabric over 3” and iron. Then fold it over another 3” and press again. Sew along the bottom crease of the hem about 1/4” from the edge to form the pocket. The top can be done at this point, or you can choose to add a header, which will make the panel extend a little past the top of the curtain rod. I’m sewing 1” from the top of the panel to form a 1” header.
Finally sew the bottom hem. To make the bottom of the curtain fall exactly where you want, hang the panel first to better judge how much to hem. For this curtain, I’m ironing another 3” double fold, like for the top hem. Again sew 1/4” from the crease.

In this video you will learn how to professionally build and upholster a cornice valance.
