The largest land border crossing in the world is the Port of San Ysidro near San Diego, California. The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers are the regulators here, inspecting the thousands of cars and people passing through on a daily basis. Each day they seize attempted smugglings of narcotics—and in recent times, the proportion of hard drug seizures they’ve been seeing has increased.
Playboy’s Yoonj Kim joins the CBP for a day, speaking with Port Director Sidney Aki, Director of Field Operations Pete Flores and Officer Angelica DeCima as they patrol the human and vehicle traffic between Tijuana and San Diego. Tijuana
Tijuana (/tiːˈwɑːnə/ tee-WHAH-nə; Spanish: [tiˈxwana]) is the largest city in Baja California and on the Baja California Peninsula and center of the Tijuana metropolitan area, part of the international San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. As an industrial and financial center of Mexico, Tijuana exerts a strong influence on economics, education, culture, art, and politics. As the city has become a leading center in the country, so has the surrounding metropolitan area, a major industrial and paramount metropolis in northwestern Mexico. Currently one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Mexico, Tijuana maintains global city status. As of 2015, the city of Tijuana had a population of 1,696,923.
On the Gold Coast of Baja California, Tijuana is the municipal seat, cultural, and commercial center of Tijuana Municipality, covering 70% of the municipality but with over 80% of its population. A dominant manufacturing center of the North American continent, the city maintains facilities of numerous multinational conglomerate companies. The 2000s (decade) saw Tijuana become the medical device manufacturing capital of North America. Also a growing cultural center, Tijuana has been recognized as a most important new cultural mecca. The city is the most visited border city in the globe; sharing an approximate 24-kilometre-long border (15 mi) with its sister city San Diego, over fifty million people annually cross the border between these two cities. This metropolitan crossing makes the San Ysidro Port of Entry the busiest land-border crossing in the world. It is estimated that the two border crossing stations between the cities proper of San Diego and Tijuana account for 300,000 daily border crossings alone.

Backstory / Anecdote:
Nat Geo just ranked Tijuana as a top travel destination for 2016. Unfortunately, this came out AFTER I went. I did not intend to go to Tijuana nor did I intend to make this video. I did not decide to cross the border from San Diego until the morning of. At 7:45AM I was on my way to TJ, but at 7:30AM I still had not decided, was not packed, and was actually still asleep.
Tijuana’s stereotypes pushed me away. No part of me wanted to come between a cartel war – I just saw Sicario and got robbed TYVM. Nor did I want to go to an American underage party haven. Little did I know the cartel war ended and there is a lot more to Tijuana than just tequila. I was in the middle of a 3 month roadtrip and I was supposed to start heading east.
7:30AM and the alarm rang. My Couchsurfer host in San Diego, already dressed and awake, kindly told me that he realized he won’t be back after work and that I had to be out with him in 15 minutes at 7:45.
Where do I go? Despite my friends and my hungover brain telling me no on Tijuana, I really had no other plans – I had no couch to sleep on in Tucson either. What’s the worst that could happen in Tijuana if I don’t bring any of my valuables? Forget tripod, I almost left my camera out of my backpack too.
Two hours later, I was in a whole ‘nother country. I met up with Leo, a random couchsurfer who decided to host me for free on a moment’s notice. I not only got my own bed, I pretty much had my own guest house. It was also my first real bed after 2 months of being on the road. I was ecstatic. In those 3 days Leo told me it was his mission to show me Mexico. He drove me around Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, Bufadora, and even Guadulupe for wine tasting.
At the end of each day when Leo was tired, he handed me off to Martha and Fernando who showed me Tijuana night life. We stayed up till almost sunrise both days I was there. Completely in love with Tijuana and what it offered me, I decided I wanted to depict the real Tijuana, beyond the stereotypes. Hastily, I asked Martha and Fernando for an interview. That’s how this video was made, with a lot of love, spontaneity and kindness from strangers in a wonderful place called Tijuana.
Here’s to Tijuana, my favorite city that I’ve been to. I hope you make it out there as well.

Backstory / Anecdote:
Nat Geo just ranked Tijuana as a top travel destination for 2016. Unfortunately, this came out AFTER I went. I did not intend to go to Tijuana nor did I intend to make this video. I did not decide to cross the border from San Diego until the morning of. At 7:45AM I was on my way to TJ, but at 7:30AM I still had not decided, was not packed, and was actually still asleep.
Tijuana’s stereotypes pushed me away. No part of me wanted to come between a cartel war – I just saw Sicario and got robbed TYVM. Nor did I want to go to an American underage party haven. Little did I know the cartel war ended and there is a lot more to Tijuana than just tequila. I was in the middle of a 3 month roadtrip and I was supposed to start heading east.
7:30AM and the alarm rang. My Couchsurfer host in San Diego, already dressed and awake, kindly told me that he realized he won’t be back after work and that I had to be out with him in 15 minutes at 7:45.
Where do I go? Despite my friends and my hungover brain telling me no on Tijuana, I really had no other plans – I had no couch to sleep on in Tucson either. What’s the worst that could happen in Tijuana if I don’t bring any of my valuables? Forget tripod, I almost left my camera out of my backpack too.
Two hours later, I was in a whole ‘nother country. I met up with Leo, a random couchsurfer who decided to host me for free on a moment’s notice. I not only got my own bed, I pretty much had my own guest house. It was also my first real bed after 2 months of being on the road. I was ecstatic. In those 3 days Leo told me it was his mission to show me Mexico. He drove me around Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, Bufadora, and even Guadulupe for wine tasting.
At the end of each day when Leo was tired, he handed me off to Martha and Fernando who showed me Tijuana night life. We stayed up till almost sunrise both days I was there. Completely in love with Tijuana and what it offered me, I decided I wanted to depict the real Tijuana, beyond the stereotypes. Hastily, I asked Martha and Fernando for an interview. That’s how this video was made, with a lot of love, spontaneity and kindness from strangers in a wonderful place called Tijuana.
Here’s to Tijuana, my favorite city that I’ve been to. I hope you make it out there as well.

Before You Go to Tijuana:
Bring documentation: U. S. citizens can visit Mexico for 72 hours or less without visas, but they need proof of citizenship when they return, A passport or government-issued photo ID and birth certificate are most common. If don't have a passport, Rushmypassport.com can help you get or renew your passport without having to run around or stand in line around to get it done.
Permanent Residents should bring their green cards and passports.
Citizens of other countries need valid passports and a valid I-94, multi-entry visa or visa waiver. Visit the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative website for more details.
Take cash: You'll get better prices in the shops. U. S. dollars are fine. Traveler's checks are not widely accepted in Tijuana. Use ATMs only for emergencies; they'll give pesos that you'll have to figure out what to do with if you don't spend them all - and may incur foreign transaction fees.
Know how you're going to get around Tijuana: Read the Tijuana transportation guide and plan ahead.
Time your trip: It can take more than three hours to get back into the U. S. from Tijuana on Saturday evening. Leave by mid-afternoon, or go on a less-busy day.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Walking is the best way to see Tijuana.The last time I went, I walked 8 miles. That's probably more than you will do, but you get the idea.
Leave expensive jewelry and designer clothing behind. You may get better prices from Tijuana shopkeepers if they think you don't have much money, and there's no point in inviting thieves.
While You're in Tijuana:
Cell Phone Roaming: As soon as you get to the border crossing, put your phone on Airplane mode to avoid international roaming charge.
Beggars: Baja Mexico's tourism department says giving beggars money won't help the problem. They suggest that you contribute to a charity that helps needy people instead.
Young Girls Selling Flowers. Pickpockets may try to distract you by trying to sell you something while at the same time lifting your wallet. Cute kids are even easier to give into, but stay alert.
Say no: Tijuana shopkeepers want your attention, and they all have a way of getting it. Some resort to stereotypes (serape and sombrero), others to politeness ("just let me show you something") and yet others to humor: "Give me a chance to rip you off." A firm "no" works with all but the most persistent.
When you've gotta "go": Some Tijuana shops have restrooms and so do some shopping complexes. There may be a small charge to use them.
Food and drink. It's still true that you need to be careful about eating and drinking in Tijuana. Stick to bottled water and drinks, avoid drinks with ice, skip the street snacks and eat only well-cooked food, just to be safe.
