This video teaches students about the important protections of the 1st &
14th Amendments. Students will learn about the five basic freedoms of
Amendment I – freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of petition, and freedom of assembly. Students will also how the
14th Amendment extended protections and right from the national government to state governments. They will learn about due process rights and the “equal protection of the laws” clauses and what these words mean for
Americans. This video is designed for students taking state exams in Civics and will be helpful to anyone studying Civics,
US Government,
US History or those taking the US Naturalization exam. This lesson was specifically created for students taking the Civics
EOC Exam and
Virginia’s Civics
SOL Exam. While I have made a series of videos for
Florida’s Civics EOC Exam, much of the material on the two state exams are similar. I will am now going through all of the Virginia tested standards, communicating with Virginia Civics
Teachers and reviewing test questions. I would welcome feedback from any teacher on how to improve these videos or lessons: jeffraymond2002@

Like most of the videos on Mr.
Raymond’s Civics
Academy’s lessons, this video ends with a review “quiz.”
Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans, worksheets, smartboard files and activities, are available at Teachers Pay Teachers.
As a civics teacher, I have often looked for civics
YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers,
US history teachers,
US government teachers and their students. While they might be a little basic for
AP Government students, they could serve as a refresher of basic concepts and content. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US
Citizens. I have also been reached by parents whose children are taking
Florida Virtual School’s (
FLVS) Civics class.
