In his first interview after accepting the
Republican presidential nomination,
Donald J. Trump spoke with
Mark Halperin for THE
CIRCUS about the week of the
Republican National Convention.
The interview was conducted on Friday, July 22, 2016, before the attack in
Munich, the selection of
Tim Kaine as
Hillary Clinton’s running mate was announced, or the
TV ratings for
Thursday’s convention session were known.
Don't miss new episodes
Sundays at 8PM ET/PT.
In this wide-ranging interview,
Trump discusses that he saved former primary campaign rival
Sen. Ted Cruz from being “ripped” off the stage by booing delegates when he entered the convention arena. He makes his first public comments about his friend
Roger Ailes since Ailes’ departure from
Fox News. Trump talks about media coverage of his wife’s speech focused on several lines lifted from
Michelle Obama's 2008 convention speech, but it wasn’t her fault and she "came out feeling fine.” He says his own speech was "fully checked by computer" as a precaution after the Melania flop. Trump also states that the
Internal Revenue Service audit of his tax returns is still underway but he “hopes” it will be done before the election. He also pledges that
Iowa and
New Hampshire will retain their first-in-the-nation status in the presidential nominating process if he wins the
White House and talks about his appreciation and affection for the tradition of the roll call vote.
