Once, not long ago, a small Egyptian Police band arrived in Israel. They came to play at an initiation ceremony but, due to bureaucracy, bad luck, or for whatever reason, they were left stranded at the airport.
They tried to manage on their own, only to find themselves in a desolate, almost forgotten, small Israeli town, somewhere in the heart of the desert. A lost band in a lost town. Not many people remember this. It wasn't that important.
The movie was selected to be Israel's Official Submission to the Best Foreign Language Film Category of the 80th Annual Academy Awards (2008), but it was disqualified by AMPAS because more than 50% of film's dialogue was found to be in English, as opposed to Arabic and Hebrew.
The Movie Won 13 International Awards.

Der Fischer Jafaar (Sasson Gabai) ist ein Pechvogel: Statt endlich den großen Fang zu machen, geht er ständig leer aus. Nur Schund und Abfall verfangen sich bei ihm und eines Tages hat er sogar ein Schwein im Netz, welches in der vorherigen Nacht von einem Frachter gefallen ist. Für die Menschen der Region Gaza, ob Israelis oder Palästinenser, sind Schweine jedoch unreine Tiere. In diesem Punkt sind sich die sonst so verfeindeten Völker relativ einig. Dem armen Jafaar bleibt also nichts anderes übrig, als seinen speckigen Fang auf dem schnellsten Wege wieder loszuwerden. Um dabei trotzdem gleich noch seine klägliche Situation etwas zu verbessern, beweist der findige Fischer einen riskanten und überaus eigensinnigen Ideenreichtum und lässt nichts unversucht, seinen Handel unter Dach und Fach zu bringen.

When Hamid (Sasson Gabai), a kind store owner, allows Betty (Sally Field) to use the phone, she calls the Swiss Embassy to plan her escape from Iran.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this docudrama based on true events, a mid-'80s Michigan housewife finds her life turned upside down when a vacation to Tehran with her Iranian husband turns into virtual imprisonment for her and her young daughter. Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is reluctant to visit the wartorn homeland of her doctor husband, Moody (Alfred Molina). But, depressed about the racism of the American medical establishment and pining for contact with his family, Moody convinces her to join him for a two-week jaunt. The Islamic fundamentalism and strange customs of Iran bewilder and frighten Betty and her daughter, Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). But nothing prepares her for Moody's announcement that the family will be remaining in Tehran indefinitely. Despite beatings and more pervasive psychological control from her husband and his relatives, Betty makes it to the Swiss embassy (there is no American ambassador at the time). There, she learns that as the wife of an Iranian, she is now automatically considered a citizen and that she has absolutely no parental rights over Mahtob in this country. Betty then endures several years as a virtual prisoner, escaping only with the help of Westernized Iranian friends. Based on the book by the real-life Mahmoody and William Hoffer, Not Without My Daughter was coincidentally released during the long build-up to 1991's Gulf War.

Sasson Gabai (born November 24, 1947) is an Israeli actor. Winner of an Ophir Award, Asia Pacific Screen Award, European Film Awards and Jerusalem Film Festival in 2007 as Best Actor in a highly acclaimed Israeli film "The Band's Visit".
Gabai was born in Baghdad in 1947 to an Iraqi Jewish family. During his childhood he immigrated together with his family to Israel. After serving his mandatory military service in the Israeli Defense Forces he studied theater and psychology at the Tel Aviv University. After graduating he began playing in the Khan Theater in Michael Alfreds group. Afterwards he played in several stage productions at the Hacameri Theater, the Be'er Sheva Theater and the Beit Lessin Theater, in which he currently is one of the permanent staff. Among the many plays he participated in were "Servant of Two Masters", "Catch 22" ,"Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?", and "Rain Man". Gabai also played in the 1989 children's musical "Peter Pan" as Captain Hook.
Through the years Gabai played in various Israeli and international films: "Sipurei Tel-Aviv","Time for Cherries", for which eh won an Ophir award, "Rambo 3", the "Escape from Saudi Arabia", "Made in Israel", "Aviva, My Love" and many others.

Der Fischer Jafaar (Sasson Gabai) ist ein Pechvogel: Statt endlich den großen Fang zu machen, geht er ständig leer aus. Nur Schund und Abfall verfangen sich bei ihm und eines Tages hat er sogar ein Schwein im Netz, welches in der vorherigen Nacht von einem Frachter gefallen ist. Für die Menschen der Region Gaza, ob Israelis oder Palästinenser, sind Schweine jedoch unreine Tiere. In diesem Punkt sind sich die sonst so verfeindeten Völker relativ einig. Dem armen Jafaar bleibt also nichts anderes übrig, als seinen speckigen Fang auf dem schnellsten Wege wieder loszuwerden. Um dabei trotzdem gleich noch seine klägliche Situation etwas zu verbessern, beweist der findige Fischer einen riskanten und überaus eigensinnigen Ideenreichtum und lässt nichts unversucht, seinen Handel unter Dach und Fach zu bringen.

When Hamid (Sasson Gabai), a kind store owner, allows Betty (Sally Field) to use the phone, she calls the Swiss Embassy to plan her escape from Iran.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this docudrama based on true events, a mid-'80s Michigan housewife finds her life turned upside down when a vacation to Tehran with her Iranian husband turns into virtual imprisonment for her and her young daughter. Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is reluctant to visit the wartorn homeland of her doctor husband, Moody (Alfred Molina). But, depressed about the racism of the American medical establishment and pining for contact with his family, Moody convinces her to join him for a two-week jaunt. The Islamic fundamentalism and strange customs of Iran bewilder and frighten Betty and her daughter, Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). But nothing prepares her for Moody's announcement that the family will be remaining in Tehran indefinitely. Despite beatings and more pervasive psychological control from her husband and his relatives, Betty makes it to the Swiss embassy (there is no American ambassador at the time). There, she learns that as the wife of an Iranian, she is now automatically considered a citizen and that she has absolutely no parental rights over Mahtob in this country. Betty then endures several years as a virtual prisoner, escaping only with the help of Westernized Iranian friends. Based on the book by the real-life Mahmoody and William Hoffer, Not Without My Daughter was coincidentally released during the long build-up to 1991's Gulf War.

Protagonista del film è Viviane Amsalem, una donna che da cinque anni cerca invano di ottenere il divorzio dal marito Elisha, davanti all'unica autorità che in Israele possa concederglielo: il tribunale rabbinico. L'ostinata determinazione di Viviane nel voler conquistare la propria libertà si scontra con l'intransigenza di Elisha e con il ruolo ambiguo dei giudici. In tribunale sfilano i testimoni convocati dalle parti, mentre il processo si trascina coi suoi contorni al tempo stesso drammatici e assurdi.

"Ubicada en la Franja de Gaza, Cuando los chanchos vuelen aborda, como otras películas recientes, el conflicto palestino-israelí desde un formato de comedia liviana. Pero más liviana, más farsesca, más obvia, más alegórica y, en definitiva, más irresponsable y demagógica que La novia siria o El árbol de lima, por poner un par de ejemplos de esta corriente. A diferencia de las anteriores, Cuando los chanchos vuelen ha sido escrita y dirigida por alguien a quien el conflicto no le incumbe en forma directa: el francés Sylvain Estibal, ganador del César a Mejor Opera Prima por esta película. En lugar de convertir la distancia en distanciamiento, Estibal intenta disimula su extranjería, asumiendo para sí los peores prejuicios de ambos bandos en pugna y consumando una película doblemente degradante. Triplemente degradante: además de degradar a judíos y palestinos, Cuando los chanchos vuelen degrada al cine mismo como hecho estético y productor de sentido.
Pescador torpe, perdedor y pusilánime, el día que no atrapa zapatillas en su red, Jafaar (el iraquí Sasson Gabai) atrapa un chancho. Chancho que, arriesga un conocido, habría llegado hasta el Mediterráneo desde Vietnam. Qué ruta siguió el porcino y cómo hizo para no ahogarse o morir en el camino es sólo la primera de una serie de licencias muy poco poéticas, que terminan con el estallido de unos explosivos que, cargados por el mismo bicho, no lo matan a él ni a la mujer que en ese momento lo llevaba, vaya a saber por qué extraño milagro de guión. El problema de Jafaar (y alegoría central de Estibal) es que, como bien se sabe, el cerdo es un animal al que el Corán y la Torá condenan por igual. Por lo cual el hombre –regañado por su esposa, burlado por sus pares y humillado a diario por los soldados israelíes que ocupan la terraza de su casita de adobe– iniciará una odisea, en busca de desprenderse de la blasfema bestia. Con la que además, claro, se ha encariñado, porque Jafaar responde también al estereotipo del tipo bueno.
La solución es lucrar con el chancho, asociado con una colona ruso-judía que vive, detrás de una cerca de alambre, junto a un grupo de compatriotas. ¿Pero cómo, no es que la religión judía prohíbe el consumo de carne de cerdo? “Lo único prohibido para los judíos es no hacer negocios”, enseña un peluquero palestino. Así que basta con ponerle unas medias al pezuñoso, para que no pise suelo israelí, y usarlo de procreador, para venderles carne de cerdo a rusos no judíos. Hasta que los fedayines se enteren de las relaciones de su compatriota con una enemiga y, en lugar de condenarlo a muerte, lo obliguen a sacrificarse como hombre-bomba. Si a esta serie de arbitrariedades, forzamientos de guión, manipulaciones narrativas y prejuicios étnicos y raciales se les suma un humor que incluye el consumo de semen de chancho por parte de un soldado, la utilización de una telenovela brasileña como metáfora (explicada) de la necesidad de superar las rivalidades entre hermanos y un remate que tiene a dos discapacitados bailando breakdance como alegoría de que lo imposible puede ser posible, se tendrá una idea de qué clase de película es ésta."

Fortunately, they connect with Dina, a ballsy, sexy café owner (Ronit Elkabetz, three-time winner of the Israeli Oscar), who helps them find lodging for the night. In the very first images of his first theatrical film, writer-director Elan Kolirin displays a mastery of low-key deadpan visual humor in the manner of Tati and Jarmusch. By the movie's second half, however, he pushes boundaries as several of the characters unexpectedly confront what one refers to as "tons of loneliness." With its precise portions of tact, irony and sweetness, Director Eran Kolirin's film gives 'humanist cinema' a good name, and offers yet another example of the resurgence of Israel's vibrant, provocative and increasingly varied film culture.

Despite all Tewfiqs efforts, it's not long before problems arise. The band arrives at the airport with no one there to greet them. Stranded and unable able to contact their Israeli hosts or the Egyptian consulate for help, Tewfiq decides that the Orchestra will persevere with its assignment and orders, and designates Khaled, a sauve young ladies man (Saleh Bakri), to ask for directions. Khaled and the station agent struggle in English, Arabic and Hebrew to communicate, but despite their best efforts, the Orchestra is sent to the outskirts of a small forgotten Israeli town in the desert.
Faced with an unknown landscape, and disgruntled and hungry men, Tewfiq brings the men to a small café in the nearby town and humbly asks the proprietor, Dina (Ronit Elkabetz), for lunch. Not wanting the turn the Orchestra away, Dina invites the men to stay with her and a few of her friends. To punish Khaled for his earlier subordination, Tewfiq orders Khaled to stay with him at Dina's, while the other men break up and follow their hosts for the night.
Dina brings the two men to her modest apartment where they begin to discuss not the political issues that divides their two cultures, but it's the intimate details of their personal lives that bring the trio closer together. Before long, Dina's wry, playful self-confidence, and undisguised sexuality make Tewfiq immediately uncomfortable. Regardless, she is persistent in her attraction to the older, serious Tewfiq, and after some prodding from Khaled, the melancholy band leader reluctantly accepts Dina's invitation to dinner. The proud Arab man in his powder blue military uniform and the free-spirited Israeli woman make an odd couple at the local restaurant, but her persistent compassion breaks through his gentlemanly demeanor and the duo form a bridge of understanding.
With the older Dina and Tewfiq gone from the apartment, Khaled decides to tag along with people closer to his age and convinces the shy and insecure Papi (Shlomi Avraham) to let him join as the fourth wheel on a double date night at a roller disco. When Papi fails to court the girl his cousin set up as his blind date, Papi turns to the suave Khaled for advice. With a little prodding and a lot of direction, Khaled helps Papi break the ice with his date. Meanwhile, the other band members, headed by second-in-command Simon (Khalifa Natour), stay with Itzik (Rubi Moscovich), which ultimately lead to tensions with his family and to revelations about fulfillment that cross cultural boundaries.
When the band leaves in the morning for their intended destination, it is clear that their unplanned detour was worth the trip.

According to CNN, the huge reptile was discovered on Saturday on one of the ponds located on a private ranch owned by Outwest Farms owner Lee Lightsey ...
