What is Epilepsy? Epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent and unpredictable seizures. Seizures are characterized by groups of neurons being activated simultaneously, leading to both outward symptoms like muscle jerking and convulsions, as well as inward symptoms like abnormal sensations. This video covers the different types of seizures, including partial seizures and its subtypes: simple partial and complex partial seizures, as well as generalized seizures and its subtypes: tonic, atonic, clonic, tonic-clonic, myoclonic, and absence seizures. It also briefly covers diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.

Striking the organ most responsible for our very humanity — the brain — it can cause terrifying and disabling seizures that come without warning, at any time, in many different forms. SEIZED: Inside the Mystery of Epilepsy tells powerful, intimate stories of patients, families and doctors fighting on the front lines for new treatments and new insights into this ancient disease.
Ouida, age 37, has complex partial seizures; she doesn’t lose consciousness or convulse, but she cannot respond and is unaware of her surroundings. She had her first seizure in 2006. One night her husband Brett woke up to a jerk in bed and saw Ouida completely stiff. Hoping for a cure, Ouida is taking a chance on a radical new surgery. A smart device will be implanted in her brain to detect a seizure and send electricity directly to try and stop it.
Ouida is one of three million Americans who have epilepsy. It affects more people than brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy combined. For almost one third of all patients, epilepsy is uncontrollable, unremitting and all-consuming.
Caitlin is 26, and her seizures began when she was 18 months old. She has had more than 12,000 seizures in her lifetime, and many are unpredictable and violent. She takes massive doses of anti-epilepsy drugs, but they don’t stop her seizures and have life threatening side effects. Caitlin was running out of options when her family heard about a radical new treatment: a form of medical marijuana called cannabidiol or CBD. They immediately signed up for a CBD trial at NYU.
Lili’s seizures began when she was just six months old, and she is now 13. She has one of the worst seizure syndromes, which has left her profoundly disabled. Just like Caitlin, not a single drug has helped stop Lili’s seizures. So as soon as her family heard about the success of CBD, they also signed up to participate in a trial at NYU.
Even as doctors and patients push the frontiers of treatment forward, a fundamental question remains: What causes epilepsy? Two years ago, Andy had a massive seizure and woke up handcuffed to a gurney in the hospital. His girlfriend told him he had been violent, but he could not remember anything. Andy had served in the Army in Afghanistan, and in November 2010 a rocket grenade threw him down a mountain. His doctor suspects this blast caused a traumatic brain injury, which has led to post-traumatic epilepsy. For now, he takes medication to control his seizures.

When dealing with a person having a seizure, do NOT put anything in their mouth, ever. Period. Don't. Got it? Good.
Next, put them on their side - doesn't matter which - in a sort of face-down on the side kind of position. The key is to make sure the saliva can run OUT of the mouth, and not back into the throat and the lungs. Remove glasses and loosen clothing where you can.
Try to prop up the person's head with something soft like a jacket or your thigh. If you see them bashing their foot or hand or any other part, try to pad that, too.
When they start to flail, very -VERY- gently keep them from crashing into stuff and flopping around and hurting themselves. DO NOT restrain them in a hard way as you can tear muscles and so on. Just keep them from hurting themselves. Gently.
DO NOT call 911 immediately. Some people with epilepsy do not want to deal with ambulances and hospitals (and COPS!!!!) just because of ONE seizure. DON'T presume. Let them ride it out and come to. After 30-40 minutes, the "waking self" is back, so let them decide what to do next. Ask them questions and see how quick the answer. The alphabet, simple stuff. You will see them come around fairly quickly, tho times can vary.
If the person has hit their head or is otherwise injured - of if they go into another seizure immediately after the first, call 911.
Check for drug allergy ID. The wrong drug can kill them.

Raising awareness is so important for conditions such as epilepsy because many people are still uneducated despite how common it is across the world!
This week I wanted to share with you the common statements and questions I'm asked on a regular basis! To me, I really love and enjoy having questions asked, comments about my condition and little jokes because it shows that the people around me are comfortable and want to know how to help me and I believe we need MORE people like this around us!

Epilepsy (from Ancient Greek ἐπιληψία), is a common and diverse set of chronic neurological disorders characterized by seizures. Some definitions of epilepsy require that seizures be recurrent and unprovoked, but others require only a single seizure combined with brain alterations which increase the chance of future seizures.
Epileptic seizures result from abnormal, excessive or hypersynchronous neuronal activity in the brain. About 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, and nearly 90% of epilepsy occurs in developing countries. Epilepsy becomes more common as people age. Onset of new cases occurs most frequently in infants and the elderly. As a consequence of brain surgery, epileptic seizures may occur in recovering patients.
Epilepsy is usually controlled, but not cured, with medication. However, over 30% of people with epilepsy do not have seizure control even with the best available medications. Surgery may be considered in difficult cases. Not all epilepsy syndromes are lifelong – some forms are confined to particular stages of childhood. Epilepsy should not be understood as a single disorder, but rather as syndromic with vastly divergent symptoms, all involving episodic abnormal electrical activity in the brain and numerous seizures.

When dealing with a person having a seizure, do NOT put anything in their mouth, ever. Period. Don't. Got it? Good. Next, put them on their side - doesn't matter which - in a sort of face-down on the side kind of position. The key is to make sure the saliva can run OUT of the mouth, and not back into the throat and the lungs. Remove glasses and loosen clothing where you can. Try to prop up the person's head with something soft like a jacket or your thigh. If you see them bashing their foot or hand or any other part, try to pad that, too. When they start to flail, very -VERY- gently keep them from crashing into stuff and flopping around and hurting themselves. DO NOT restrain them in a hard way as you can tear muscles and so on. Just keep them from hurting themselves. Gently. DO NOT call... -

Ouida, age 37, has complex partial seizures; she doesn’t lose consciousness or convulse, but she cannot respond and is unaware of her surroundings. She had her first seizure in 2006. One night her husband Brett woke up to a jerk in bed and saw Ouida completely stiff. Hoping for a cure, Ouida is taking a chance on a radical new surgery. A smart device will be implanted in her brain to detect a seizure and send electricity directly to try and stop it.
Ouida is one of three million Americans who have epilepsy. It affects more people than brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy combined. For almost one third of all patients, epilepsy is uncontrollable, unremitting and all-consuming.
Caitlin is 26, and her seizures began when she was 18 months old. She has had more than 12,000 seizures in her lifetime, and many are unpredictable and violent. She takes massive doses of anti-epilepsy drugs, but they don’t stop her seizures and have life threatening side effects. Caitlin was running out of options when her family heard about a radical new treatment: a form of medical marijuana called cannabidiol or CBD. They immediately signed up for a CBD trial at NYU.
Lili’s seizures began when she was just six months old, and she is now 13. She has one of the worst seizure syndromes, which has left her profoundly disabled. Just like Caitlin, not a single drug has helped stop Lili’s seizures. So as soon as her family heard about the success of CBD, they also signed up to participate in a trial at NYU.
Even as doctors and patients push the frontiers of treatment forward, a fundamental question remains: What causes epilepsy? Two years ago, Andy had a massive seizure and woke up handcuffed to a gurney in the hospital. His girlfriend told him he had been violent, but he could not remember anything. Andy had served in the Army in Afghanistan, and in November 2010 a rocket grenade threw him down a mountain. His doctor suspects this blast caused a traumatic brain injury, which has led to post-traumatic epilepsy. For now, he takes medication to control his seizures.

DO NOT call 911 immediately. Some people with epilepsy do not want to deal with ambulances and hospitals (and COPS!!!!) just because of ONE seizure. DON'T presume. Let them ride it out and come to. After 30-40 minutes, the "waking self" is back, so let them decide what to do next. Ask them questions and see how quick the answer. The alphabet, simple stuff. You will see them come around fairly quickly, tho times can vary.
If the person has hit their head or is otherwise injured - of if they go into another seizure immediately after the first, call 911.
Check for drug allergy ID. The wrong drug can kill them.

DO NOT call 911 immediately. Some people with epilepsy do not want to deal with ambulances and hospitals (and COPS!!!!) just because of ONE seizure. DON'T presume. Let them ride it out and come to. After 30-40 minutes, the "waking self" is back, so let them decide what to do next. Ask them questions and see how quick the answer. The alphabet, simple stuff. You will see them come around fairly quickly, tho times can vary.
If the person has hit their head or is otherwise injured - of if they go into another seizure immediately after the first, call 911.
Check for drug allergy ID. The wrong drug can kill them.
