Jack Reed (baseball)

John Burwell Reed (February 2, 1933 in Silver City, Mississippi) is a former professional baseball player. He was an outfielder over parts of three seasons (1961–1963) with the New York Yankees. Reed was a member of the 1961 World Series champion Yankees. An alumnus of the University of Mississippi, for the Yankees Reed played primarily as a late-inning defensive replacement for star outfielder Mickey Mantle. For this reason, he was popularly known as "Mickey Mantle's caddy."

For his career Reed hit .233 with 1 home run and 6 runs batted in in 222 games played (129 at-bats). He is only one of seven players in Major League Baseball history with more career games played than plate appearances.

On June 24, 1962, Reed hit the only home run of his career in the top of the 22nd inning, as the Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 9-7 in the longest game in Yankees' history.

Jack Reed is a series of popular made for TV crime drama films fictionalizing the career of real-life Cook County Sheriff's Homicide Investigator Jack Reed. The first film, Deadly Matrimony, a two-part drama based on the Barbara Schaaf's non-fiction book about the Dianne Masters murder case, Shattered Hopes, was first broadcast in 1992. It was written by Andrew Laskos, directed by John Korty, and starred Brian Dennehy as Reed.

Deadly Matrimony was well-enough received that it was followed, the next year by Badge of Honor, also written by Laskos, and directed by Kevin Connor. Dennehy, who had pushed to get more films based on Reed's career made, was the co-executive producer.

Further sequels, also starring Dennehy, were also all directed by him.

All the films were loosely based on cases Reed had investigated during his police career.

In the films, Reed was depicted as a sergeant. In real life, by the time the films were being broadcast, Reed was a lieutenant, in charge of the Sheriff's cold case detail. When he retired from the Sheriff's Police after thirty-five years, he entered private security.

Jack Raymond Reed, Sr. (May 19, 1924 – January 27, 2016), was an American businessman and politician from his native Tupelo, Mississippi.

Reed graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. During World War II, he served in the Signal Intelligence Service of the United States Army of Occupation in Japan. In 1947, he received his master's degree in retailing from New York University in New York City. Reed returned home to help with his family's Reed's Department Store. He was president of the Mississippi Economic Council in 1962. In 1984, Reed was appointed to the Mississippi Board of Education.

He was the 1987 Mississippi Republican gubernatorial nominee. He defeated Doug Lemon in his party's primary election. Reed then lost the general election to Democrat Ray Mabus.

Nevertheless, Reed's 47 percent of the vote was encouraging to his party. He fared better than his Republican predecessors Rubel Phillips in 1963 and 1967, Gil Carmichael in 1975 and 1979, and Leon Bramlett in 1983. In 1991, the Mississippi GOP won the governorship for the first time since Reconstruction with the election of businessman Kirk Fordice, who unseated Mabus.
