Kashmiri Muslim Lives Matter

Adnan Abidi / Reuters
I must confess it is rather hilarious for me, as a Kashmiri Hindu, to be questioned on the infamous premise of “what-about-ery”. What about Kashmiri Hindus, such as myself? What about our beloved armed forces? Are their lives not lives; do they not matter? People who ask such questions include, to my bewilderment, even those who recognize the significance of saying “Black Lives Matter”, as opposed to “all lives matter.”

Our Schools Are Partly Responsible For The Popularity Of Zakir Naik And His Ilk

ASSOCIATED PRESS
The immense appeal of Zakir Naik's demagoguery, especially among articulate, seemingly educated folks who hail him as an intellectual, is a symptom of an affliction that is not confined to the Muslim community alone. The real problem is that our education system is churning out millions of literate number crunchers, code writers and paper pushers, but lays little emphasis on critical thinking.

What Will Prakash Javadekar Do With Smriti Irani's Legacy?

AFP/Getty Images
The reins of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) have been prised from the hands of Smriti Irani and entrusted to Prakash Javadekar. How he will handle the job is now the subject of a fair amount of speculation. Let’s start with his recent track record.

It's Time We Muslims Chose Common Sense Over Zakir Naik

Hindustan Times via Getty Images
Zakir Naik is not even a theologian. He's an MBBS doctor-turned-Islamic preacher whose reputation rests on only his computer-like memory. Naik can quote verse after verse from the Quran, Bible, Gita and others just off his head. His speeches are littered with pseudoscience, bogus philosophy, absurd arguments, false analogies, and above all, an impertinent disrespect of other religions and cultures. But as long as he's citing chapter number and verse number, he keeps getting applause.

Photoblog: Tears, Blood And Rage In Kashmir

Kashmir burst into a conflagration following the shooting death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in a brief encounter in Kokernag, Anantnag district. So far, more than 1500 people have suffered injuries and around 30 protesters have lost their lives after the forces fired at them. It is a time of mourning in the state, and one of simmering anger as well.

Why Dangerous Ideologues Like Zakir Naik Deserve Our Loudest Condemnation

Hindustan Times via Getty Images
Zakir Naik is neither a representative of Indian Muslims nor a personification of Indian secularism. He is a bully who thrives on misinformation and sectarianism and represents everything that is wrong with blind religiosity. He is an expert in the politics of division. Which is why we need to actively speak out against Naik and other personalities like him.

Does Brexit Mean That Globalization Is Dying? Should It?

Getty Images/iStockphoto
With the United Kingdom voting to exit the EU, possibly the most ambitious project of globalization, questions have been raised about this de facto state of the world. Apart from the Brexit vote, Donald Trump’s nomination as a Republican candidate and the rise of many nationalist parties across Western Europe, all seem to question the virtues of a globalized world. So, has globalization not been good for the world? Why this backlash against it?

Why Our 'Celebration' Of Snakes Is A Curse On Them

Navesh Chitrakar / Reuters
The season of Nagpanchami is drawing close and Sumanth Bindhumadhav knows he has his work cut out for him. As a consultant with Humane Society International/India, he is trained to rescue animals, including snakes. He received word recently that a group of people, purportedly from the snake charmer community, had captured and were holding snakes. With World Snake Day taking place on 16 July, it's important to remind everyone that it's illegal to capture, display and kill snakes in India under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Why Fear The Law When The Law Fears You?

India is close to becoming an appropriated state, taken over by the rich and powerful and their retinue of fixers and bullies. It has already become a place where well-connected, well-heeled murderers of innocents like Jessica Lal, who are supposed to be serving long sentences, make a mockery of the system…

When My Love Shah Rukh Khan Told Me 'I'll Find You'

Mark Blinch / Reuters
Mr Shah Rukh Khan has been one of the few constants of my life for the past 15 years. All through my teenage years, relationships, loves, careers, marriage and now parenthood, I’ve felt his presence in my life. To say that I am a "fan" is pretty much undervaluing what I feel about him. So, when he called my name not once, not twice, but four times, my impossible dream came within touching distance.

Can Azadi Raise Kashmir's Standard Of Living?

Danish Ismail / Reuters
I am deeply saddened by the recent incidents of violence in Kashmir after the killing of Burhan Wani, the Hizbul Mujahideen commander. I am a Kashmiri myself, and I have always condemned atrocities against Kashmiris, whether Pandits or Muslims. The fact that Kashmiri Muslims are being killed or injured at present makes no difference to me. Their DNA is the same as mine. However, I would like to express my views here on their demand for “azadi” or freedom.

My Crimes Of Convenience

Suffering, like everything else in the world, can now be boxed in a space I choose to enter when empathy is in vogue, to exit when the next episode of my favourite show is on, enter to sign a petition, exit to order in, enter to share a two-minute video, exit to avoid a two-page report.
