PL-10: Short range IIR missile In 2015–16, Beijing brought into service the PL-10 imaging infrared air-to-air missile (AAM). It is a Chinese high off-boresight infrared homing missile featuring multi-element imagining infrared (IIR) sensor capable of +/-90 degree off boresight angles and can be slaved to a helmet-mounted display (HMD). This allows the pilot to track a target beyond the aircraft’s radar scan envelope using the missile’s high off-boresight capability. The pilot can lock on target by turning his head towards the target known as “look and shoot”. It’s reportedly resistant to jamming and electronic countermeasures and capable of lock-on-after-launch (LOAL) which allows the missile to update target data using datalink while in flight. The missile has maximum operational range of 20 km. It also features thrust-vector controlled solid rocket motor and free-moving control wings on the missile’s tail which aids the missile to achieve turn capability of over 60Gs and high angles of attack. PL-12: Long range BVR missile The PL-12 is an active radar-guided beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. The initial development of missile began with assistance & ToT from Russia. The missile weighs 180 kg, range between 70-80 km and speed greater than Mach 4. The guidance system comprises data-linked for mid-course guidance and active radar homing for terminal guidance. PL-15: Long range BVR missile In 2018, China introduced PL-15 extended-range active radar-guided AAM. The missile has length measured between 3.8 and 4 metres and wider than other contemporary radar missiles. It is a dual-pulsed solid-fuel rocket motor having speed in excess of Mach 4+ and a range near 200 kilometres. The missile is guided an active electronically scanned array radar seeker with active and passive modes for different missions. The missile also features improved resistance to countermeasures. It also supports a mid-course two-way datalink and autonomous terminal radar homing. In the year 2021, during the Zhuhai Airshow, China unveiled an export variant of PL-15 named PL-15E with a maximum range of 145 km. PL-17: Very long range BVR missile China continues to further develop medium-to-long-range missiles including ramjet-sustainer designs as well as a very long-range AAM. During the recent Zhuhai Airshow China has finally unveiled PL-17 missile which is being reported as an ultra-long-range AAM for a range of more than 300 km against high-value targets like EW/AEW assets and tanker. The PL-17 seems to have length close to 6m – nearly 2m more than PL-15 missile and diameter of 300 mm – 97 mm more than PL-15 which explains its very long range.
