The plot is regarded as risqué enough to appear in at least one collection of pre-Code Hollywood films.
SYNOPSIS
Father hires a woman to lure his son away from a gold digger.
Sir Gerald Courtney (Gilbert Emery) is an aristocrat whose son, Russell (John Darrow), prefers to spend his time partying with young women rather than focusing on the promising career he has in architecture. When Russell leaves one evening to revel with the gold-digging Berthine Waller (Margaret Livingston) rather than spending it dining with his father, Sir Gerald is a bit despondent. As he ponders what to do about his wayward son, providence takes a hand.
A beautiful destitute young woman, June (Betty Compson), on the verge of entering into the oldest of professions due to her desperation, is being pursued by the London police. Sir Gerald, who was at the window on the first floor watching his son leaving with Berthine Waller, observes how June leaves a taxi on the other side of the street, and is being cornered by the police. As she comes over to his house to knock, he opens the door and welcomes her as a niece he was expecting, reassuring the Policemen that she is a respectable citizen. After they leave, Sir Gerald invites her to dinner, after she tells him of her situation. He then proposes to hire June for 1000 Pounds to prevent his son from falling into the clutches of Berthine.
Betty Compson as June
June does her job beautifully, as Russell leaves Berthine and begins to concentrate on his architectural career, much to his father’s delight. There’s a slight hitch, however: June has fallen in love with Sir Gerald, rather than Russell. Devastated, Russell calls Berthine to meet him at his apartment (which is upstairs in the same building where June lives). Seeing all of her work being unwound in a single evening, June lures Russell down to her apartment where she gets him so drunk that he passes out and spends the night.
Berthine arrives at Russell’s apartment where she has been followed by an ex-lover, Nikolai Rabinoff (Ivan Lebedeff). In a jealous rage, Nikolai kills Berthine. The following morning Russell awakes to find June gone, having vowed to not come between the son and the father. Russell is also the main suspect in Berthine's murder. Seeking shelter from his father, Russell refuses to invoke June as his alibi. In order to save him, June steps forward and admits that Russell spent the night in her apartment. Sir Gerald, thinking the worst, renounces his devotion for June, which devastates her, but confirmed what she always feared: That Sir Gerald would never rely on her. June leaves his house, but when Sir Gerald, shortly thereafter, discovers the innocence of Russell’s night spent in her apartment, he realizes his own mistake and vows to track her down and spend the rest of his life with her.

Early Film Production in Western Australia
This has an emphasis on early film production in WA, though it also covers the history of movie making in Australia, with an emphasis on pioneering feature films.
Leonard Corrick filmed a short chase comedy called “The Bashful Mr Brown” in 1907, which was possibly the first narrative film made in Western Australia.
Later, Fred Murphy made a drama called “Love’s Own Luck” in 1920, which he claimed to be the first acted picture made in WA. This was followed by a comedy called “Twins and Trouble”, made for the Ugly Men’s philanthropic group. Another was “Dreams and Screams”, made in 1923 for Sir Thomas Coombe, the owner of the Prince of Wales Theatre in Perth.
As much of the pioneering movie making was taking place in the eastern states, a report on the history of film production there...

He falls in love with Doreen (Lyell), who works in a pickle factory, but faces competition from a more sophisticated rival, Stror 'at Coot. Based on the poem The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke by C.J. Dennis, from which the intertitle text (written in the Australian vernacular of the time) are taken. This is regarded as one of the better films of the Australian silent era, and as an all-round good film.

As much of the pioneering movie making was taking place in the eastern states, a report on the history of film production there is also given.
Starting with the world's first film studio, the Limelight Department, operated by the Salvation Army in Australia, which between 1897 and 1910 produced about 300 films of various lengths.
Then there was the 1906 production of “The Story of the Kelly Gang”, the earliest known feature film, which was written and directed by Charles Tait, and included several of his family.
The Sentimental Bloke is a 1918 Australian silent film produced and directed by Raymond Longford, the film stars Arthur Tauchert, Gilbert Emery, and Lottie Lyell, who also co-wrote the film with Longford.
In 1930 F. W. Thring (1883–1936) established the Efftee Studios based in Melbourne to make talking films using optical sound equipment imported from the United States.
Ken G. Hall became a driving force in establishing Cinesound Productions in 1931. It was particularly successful with the “On Our Selection” (1932) series of comedies, based on the popular writings of author Steele Rudd. Cinesound produced only 17 feature-films.
Kokoda Front Line! (1942), directed by Ken G. Hall, won Australia's first Oscar.
In 1933, “In the Wake of the Bounty”, directed by Charles Chauvel, cast Tasmanian-born Errol Flynn in a leading role. Chauvel directed a number of successful Australian films, including 1944's World War II classic “The Rats of Tobruk” (which starred Peter Finch and Chips Rafferty) and 1955's “Jedda”, which was notable as the first Australian film shot in colour, starring indigenous. actors.
We then turn our attention to the “Nickel Queen”, a movie made in WA in 1971, which is considered to be the first colour and sound feature movie to come out of the West.
There was a time when Seven Perth aspired to starting a movie industry in Western Australia. Their initial attempt involved the State government and a film company led by an Australian actor, who made it big in British movies during the 1940s and 1950s. The film starred his popular British actress wife.
The movie was the “Nickel Queen”, a 1971 Australian comedy film starring Googie Withers and directed by her husband John McCallum. The story was loosely based on the Poseidon bubble, a nickel boom in Western Australia in the late 1960s, and tells of an outback pub owner who stakes a claim and finds herself an overnight millionaire.
The movie ran for six months at the Piccadilly Theatre in Perth, but was not as popular elsewhere.
The world premier was held in Perth, with all the razzmatazz one would expect associated with a Hollywood movie.
TVW7 featured this in a 45 minute outside broadcast, but the best was to follow four days later at the Kalgoorlie premier, where the excited locals were most enthused at seeing themselves and their friends on the big screen.

A Farewell to Arms is a 1932 American pre-Code romance drama film directed by Frank Borzage and starring Helen Hayes, Gary Cooper, and Adolphe Menjou.[2] Based on the 1929 semi-autobiographical novel A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, with a screenplay by Oliver H. P. Garrett and Benjamin Glazer, the film is about a tragic romantic love affair between an American ambulance driver and an English nurse in Italy during World War I. The film received
Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Art Direction.[
The original Broadway play starred Glenn Anders and Elissa Landi.
Plot
This is the plot of the original 1932 film, as it recently aired on Turner Classic Movies. The film suffered from editing and censorship even at its initial release. On the Italian front during World War I, Lieutenant Frederic Henry (Gary Cooper), an American architect serving as an officer on an ambulance in the Italian Army, delivers some wounded soldiers to a hospital. While out carousing with his friend, Italian Captain Rinaldi (Adolphe Menjou), they are interrupted by a bombing raid. Frederic and English Red Cross nurse Catherine Barkley (Helen Hayes), who fled from the nurses’ dormitory in her night clothes, take shelter in the same dark stairwell. The somewhat drunk Frederic makes a poor first impression.
Rinaldi persuades Frederic to go on a double date with him and two nurses, who turn out to be Catherine and her friend Helen Ferguson (Mary Philips), or "Fergie". During a concert for officers and nurses, Frederic and Catherine walk into the garden, and Catherine reveals that she had been engaged for eight years to a soldier who was killed in battle. Away by themselves, he tries to kiss her and she slaps him, but after they talk more, she asks him to kiss her again. In the darkness, he romantically seduces her, over her resistance, and is taken aback and touched to discover she was a virgin. Frederic tell her he loves her. In the morning, three ambulances, including Frederic's, are leaving for what will be known as the Second Battle of the Piave River. Frederic finds Catherine and tells her that he will be away and that he wants her to know that what happened between them was important to him, and that he will survive the battle unscathed. Catherine gives him the St. Anthony medal she wears around her neck. Rinaldi observes all of this, and then enters a major's office where it is revealed that Rinaldi had orchestrated the separation to prevent Frederic from being with Catherine. The head nurse then suggests sending Catherine back to base, but instead the Major (Gilbert Emery) transfers Catherine to Milan.
At the front, Frederic is badly wounded in the legs and head when his bunker is blown up by an artillery shell. Frederic is sent to the hospital in Milan where he receives a chilly reception from Fergie while Catherine rushes to his bed to embrace him. Later that night, an Italian Army chaplain (Jack La Rue) known as "Padre" visits Frederic and sees that Catherine and him are lovers. He asks if they would marry if they could, and they answer "yes". He then performs an unofficial wedding service for the couple.
Cast:
Helen Hayes as Catherine Barkley
Gary Cooper as Lieutenant Frederic Henry
Adolphe Menjou as Major Rinaldi
Mary Philips as Helen Ferguson
Jack La Rue as Priest
Blanche Friderici as Head Nurse
Mary Forbes as Miss Van Campen
Gilbert Emery as British Major
Agostino Borgato as Giulio (uncredited)
Tom Ricketts as Count Greffi (uncredited)
Critical reception:
Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes
In his 1932 review in The New York Times, Mordaunt Hall wrote:
There is too much sentiment and not enough strength in the pictorial conception of Ernest Hemingway's novel ... the film account skips too quickly from one episode to another and the hardships and other experiences of Lieutenant Henry are passed over too abruptly, being suggested rather than told ... Gary Cooper gives an earnest and splendid portrayal [and] Helen Hayes is admirable as Catherine ... another clever characterization is contributed by Adolphe Menjou ... it is unfortunate that these three players, serving the picture so well, do not have the opportunity to figure in more really dramatic interludes.
Public domain note:
In 1960, the film entered the public domain in the United States because the last claimant, United Artists, did not renew its copyright registration in the 28th year after publication.

A Huge Problem
We all know bullying huge problem all over the world — it’s been happening before the word even existed. Picking on people for no reason and dumping all your personal frustrations on them is something we see around us.
Fortunately, bullying is now a subject many of us are aware of, and the trend of standing up to bullies and having others support you is on the rise. Take, for example, this boy’s experience at his local Burger King.
