Waihi
Waihi is a town in Hauraki District in the North Island of New Zealand, especially notable for its history as a gold mine town. It had a population of 4,527 at the 2013 census.
The town is at the foot of the Coromandel Peninsula, close to the western end of the Bay of Plenty. The nearby resort town of Waihi Beach, ten kilometres to the east, is often regarded as the westernmost point of the Bay of Plenty region. To the west are the hills of the Kaimai Ranges. Road access from this direction is through the winding Karangahake Gorge road. Waihi has an unusually wet and damp microclimate for New Zealand's east coast with an average annual rainfall of 2147 mm.
History
Early times
Waihi is located in the Coromandel district, which was one of the great gold mining districts of the world. The township grew around the mining operations since the discovery of gold in 1878 by prospectors John McCombie and Robert Lee. The samples of rock they had sent to be assayed were not considered worthwhile, so they left the area.

Excerpt: "After a fried egg butty we were on our way by 9am. It was time to explore some of Auckland's Volcanic field. We started off by heading over to Mount Eden, Auckland's highest cone (volcano) which stands 196 metres high. The views were fantastic and we got a full 360 degree view of the city and beyond. It was amazing to see all of the other cones from up high too. We had a nice leisurely walk around the crater rim to start the day. We then headed over to Cornwall Park to see One Tree Hill which was the site of the greatest fortress in the country and the most famous sight in Auckland. This famous 'pa' had a population of 5000 people and has a large monument at the top dedicated to the Maori people. Again the views were fantastic but we were lazy and drove up to the summit instead of walking -- shame on us. We headed briefly back to Wicked to pick up more vouchers for the expensive campsites as it makes the cost comparable with the national parks but with hot showers, kitchens and bins etc. A definite bargain and lady E came up with the goods. We then headed on our way Eastbound to the Coromandel region and towards the famous 'Hot Water Beach' in an aim to try and get there at low tide. Essentially you hire a spade and dig a hole in the sand until you find thermal springs. Thankfully we bumped into the two Americans from a few nights ago who had a spade already so as they left we arrived and exchanged a promise to return the spade and meet them at Cathedral Cove, a bit further north in an hour or so. So we headed off across the beach fully equipped to try and find a hot spring with a warning from the guys to try and find somewhere where the water was not too hot. It all seemed a little surreal really. We (I) started digging and soon hit the warm water. Some of the pools were so hot you couldn't even walk in the water almost scalding yourself which was pretty *******n weird considering the sea was only about 30m away. Although warm it wasn't hot but we soon" ...

Hey guys, I am a backpacker from Germany currently travelling around New Zealand with a Working Holiday Visa. It was quite hard work on these kiwi orchards in the Bay of Plenty of NZs North Island but it was also a great time living there. Great weather, awesome people and the partys in the Hostel.. Hey guys, I am a backpacker from Germany currently travelling around New Zealand with a Working Holiday Visa. It was quite hard work on these kiwi orchards in the Bay of Plenty of NZs North Island but it was also a great time living there. Great weather, awesome people and the partys in the Hostel.. Considered one of the best Oahu attractions, Waimea Valley is home to several ancient Hawaiian sites, including the Hale O Lono Heiau. This is also one of the most beautiful Hawaiian rainforests you'll find.
But if it's Oahu waterfalls you're seeking — don't miss a swim in the 45-foot Waimea Falls, which are free with park admission.
The Waimea Valley Falls were called Waihi by the natives, who settled here almost 900 years ago. The Waimea Falls hike is approximately 1 mile from the park entrance.
With more than 1,800 acres, Waimea Valley is home to more than 5,000 tropical plants in its Hawaiian botanical gardens— many of them quite rare. At the Hawaiian games area, you can play Hawaiian checkers, lawn bowling and other Maka-hiki activities. The park also hosts several guided hikes and Hawaiian activities throughout the year, so check their Web site for details.
Formerly know as Waimea Valley Adventure Park and Waimea Valley Audubon Center, Waimea Valley is now run by Hi`ipaka LLC.
Waimea Valley Grill serves up a nice mix of Hawaiian food, ranging from fresh ahi tuna burgers on taro buns to Pupukea salads, vegan taro burgers and Kalua pork plate lunches. The Acai smoothie is a nice way to beat the heat!
Currently Waimea Falls park admission is $13 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. The Kamaaina price is $8 for adults and $5 children and seniors.
