5 Mysterious Ocean Discoveries From Beneath The Sea!

There is no doubt that the sea harbors very weird things. The seabed is dotted with a number of discoveries that would definitely surprise even the strongest today. Because of the unique and forgiving conditions of the sea, it has been possible for people to find certain discoveries and some can be pretty mind blowing indeed... With this being said, prepare, because here are 5 Mysterious Discoveries From Beneath The Sea! Ready? Well, Lets Begin!
1. USS Conestoga
The USS Conestoga was a navy boat that disappeared shortly after setting sail from San Francisco in 1921. A massive search was launched to try and locate the boat but nothing was found apart from a life boat that had overturned and had sailed several miles away. 95 years later in 2016, this disappearance was finally solved. It is obvious that the technology at our disposal was inadequate to locate the boat. In 2009, a mysterious shipwreck was discovered on Farallon Islands, although it was not until 2015 that the remotely controlled underwater cameras were able to discover that the wreck was indeed that of USS Conestoga.
2. Thonis-Heracleion And Canopus
Two cities, Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus, disappeared after being at the mercy of natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. This took place in the 8th century AD. We had only heard about these cities in history books until the year 2000 when it was claimed that the cities have been discovered in Alexandria. This place has since yielded large amounts of artifacts from the cities and more and more artifacts are being discovered every day. It is claimed that they are yet to extract even a fraction of what lies underneath the sea and that there is a possibility that there could even be a third city hidden... Crazy huh?
3. Madagascar’s Giant Bones
There have been discoveries of prehistoric animals that existed long time ago in the small African island of Madagascar. One of the fossils that were found at this place included the remains of an extinct species of lemur that is estimated to weigh more than fifteen times the size of their present relatives. Three caves that had sunk were discovered and preserved at the Tsimanampetsots National Park. Here, it was discovered that there were thousands of fossils that indicated a prehistoric existence that dated back thousands of years. In fact, there were so many that each time the archeologists felt something on the ground, it was without a doubt a fossil of an extinct animal. It is thought that these animals felt threatened by the presence of humans in the island and decided to hide inside these caves until they became extinct....
4. English Aristocratic Clothing
After Texel and Eyerland merged to become the island of Texel, it became a very important stop point for the traders that usually moved to and from Holland. The only problem was the sea surrounding the island. It is believed that the Wadden Sea was so dangerous that it claimed several ships. It is here that a 400 year old dress belonging to an English noblewoman was discovered. The dress had a royal seal belonging to King Charles I which is why it was believed that the dress belonged to a noblewoman.
5. The Ships Of The Fourni Archipelago
Today, the Fourni Archipelago islands pass off as very small Greek islands. However, these islands were really significant in the ancient Greek trade routes. One thing that stands out about these islands is they have recorded the most number of shipwrecks in history. So much so that they were sometimes referred to as the shipwreck capital of the world. Between 2015 and now, there have been 22 discoveries of shipwrecks that date as far back as the 400BC. Several artifacts have also been discovered in these shipwrecks and they have shed some more light in the lives of sailors in the ancient world. The statistics, however, indicate that there were several ships that went through the harbor and that only one shipwreck was recorded every 100 years.

Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure “In the Heart of the Sea,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex.
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story.
“In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.
“In the Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers,” “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.
Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) also stars as young seaman Tom Nickerson, and Brendan Gleeson (“Edge of Tomorrow”) as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (“Riddick”) is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.
Howard directed from a screenplay by Charles Leavitt (“Blood Diamond”), story by Charles Leavitt and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), based on the book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick, winner of the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
The film is produced by Joe Roth (“Oz the Great and Powerful”), Paula Weinstein (“Blood Diamond,” “This is Where I Leave You”), Will Ward, Brian Grazer (“J. Edgar”) and Ron Howard. Serving as executive producers are Bruce Berman, Sarah Bradshaw, Palak Patel, Erica Huggins and David Bergstein, with William M. Connor as co-producer.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “Rush”); production designer Mark Tildesley (“The Fifth Estate”); Oscar-winning editors Michael Hill (“Apollo 13,” “Rush”) and Dan Hanley (“Apollo 13”); costume designer Julian Day (“Rush”) and composer Roque Baños (“Evil Dead”).
“In the Heart of the Sea” is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a COTT Productions-Enelmar Productions, A.I.E. co-production, a Roth Films/Spring Creek/Imagine Entertainment Production, in Association with Kia Jam.
Opening in December, 2015 in theaters and IMAX, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Sea
A sea is a large body of salt water that is surrounded in whole or in part by land. More broadly, "the sea" is the interconnected system of Earth's salty, oceanic waters—considered as one global ocean or as several principal oceanic divisions. The sea moderates Earth's climate and has important roles in the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle. Although the sea has been travelled and explored since prehistory, the modern scientific study of the sea—oceanography—dates broadly to the British Challenger expedition of the 1870s. The sea is conventionally divided into up to five large oceanic sections—including the IHO's four named oceans (the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic) and the Southern Ocean; smaller, second-order sections, such as the Mediterranean, are known as seas.
Owing to the present state of continental drift, the Northern Hemisphere is now fairly equally divided between land and sea (a ratio of about 2:3) but the South is overwhelmingly oceanic (1:4.7).Salinity in the open ocean is generally in a narrow band around 3.5% by mass, although this can vary in more landlocked waters, near the mouths of large rivers, or at great depths. About 85% of the solids in the open sea are sodium chloride. Deep-sea currents are produced by differences in salinity and temperature. Surface currents are formed by the friction of waves produced by the wind and by tides, the changes in local sea level produced by the gravity of the Moon and Sun. The direction of all of these is governed by surface and submarine land masses and by the rotation of the Earth (the Coriolis effect).

1. USS Conestoga
The USS Conestoga was a navy boat that disappeared shortly after setting sail from San Francisco in 1921. A massive search was launched to try and locate the boat but nothing was found apart from a life boat that had overturned and had sailed several miles away. 95 years later in 2016, this disappearance was finally solved. It is obvious that the technology at our disposal was inadequate to locate the boat. In 2009, a mysterious shipwreck was discovered on Farallon Islands, although it was not until 2015 that the remotely controlled underwater cameras were able to discover that the wreck was indeed that of USS Conestoga.
2. Thonis-Heracleion And Canopus
Two cities, Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus, disappeared after being at the mercy of natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. This took place in the 8th century AD. We had only heard about these cities in history books until the year 2000 when it was claimed that the cities have been discovered in Alexandria. This place has since yielded large amounts of artifacts from the cities and more and more artifacts are being discovered every day. It is claimed that they are yet to extract even a fraction of what lies underneath the sea and that there is a possibility that there could even be a third city hidden... Crazy huh?
3. Madagascar’s Giant Bones
There have been discoveries of prehistoric animals that existed long time ago in the small African island of Madagascar. One of the fossils that were found at this place included the remains of an extinct species of lemur that is estimated to weigh more than fifteen times the size of their present relatives. Three caves that had sunk were discovered and preserved at the Tsimanampetsots National Park. Here, it was discovered that there were thousands of fossils that indicated a prehistoric existence that dated back thousands of years. In fact, there were so many that each time the archeologists felt something on the ground, it was without a doubt a fossil of an extinct animal. It is thought that these animals felt threatened by the presence of humans in the island and decided to hide inside these caves until they became extinct....
4. English Aristocratic Clothing
After Texel and Eyerland merged to become the island of Texel, it became a very important stop point for the traders that usually moved to and from Holland. The only problem was the sea surrounding the island. It is believed that the Wadden Sea was so dangerous that it claimed several ships. It is here that a 400 year old dress belonging to an English noblewoman was discovered. The dress had a royal seal belonging to King Charles I which is why it was believed that the dress belonged to a noblewoman.
5. The Ships Of The Fourni Archipelago
Today, the Fourni Archipelago islands pass off as very small Greek islands. However, these islands were really significant in the ancient Greek trade routes. One thing that stands out about these islands is they have recorded the most number of shipwrecks in history. So much so that they were sometimes referred to as the shipwreck capital of the world. Between 2015 and now, there have been 22 discoveries of shipwrecks that date as far back as the 400BC. Several artifacts have also been discovered in these shipwrecks and they have shed some more light in the lives of sailors in the ancient world. The statistics, however, indicate that there were several ships that went through the harbor and that only one shipwreck was recorded every 100 years.

Several artifacts have also been discovered in these shipwrecks and they have shed some more light in the lives of sailors in the ancient world. The statistics, however, indicate that there were several ships that went through the harbor and that only one shipwreck was recorded every 100 years.

Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure “In the Heart of the Sea,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex.
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story.
“In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.
“In the Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers,” “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.
Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) also stars as young seaman Tom Nickerson, and Brendan Gleeson (“Edge of Tomorrow”) as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (“Riddick”) is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.
Howard directed from a screenplay by Charles Leavitt (“Blood Diamond”), story by Charles Leavitt and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), based on the book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick, winner of the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
The film is produced by Joe Roth (“Oz the Great and Powerful”), Paula Weinstein (“Blood Diamond,” “This is Where I Leave You”), Will Ward, Brian Grazer (“J. Edgar”) and Ron Howard. The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples: 1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. 2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam.
