This unusual record label with Xmas Greetings from Ivor Novello, printed, suggests that the 12” disc was sent out as a present to friends from Novello himself. The selection was commercially released on HMV C.2965. “Keep The Home Fires Burning” as well as “And Her Mother Came Too” are well-known Novello compositions and will be familiar to most viewers of my channel, but the other melodies here are quite delightful too and worth a reprise.
This recording, made by HMV in 1937, is long out-of-copyright and this unique restoration may not be copied or sold without the permission of the channel owner. The transfer from the 78 disc was not the easiest I have done, but I trust that whatever audio imperfections there are will not detract from your listening pleasure.

I’ve always known the name ‘Ivor Novello’ but to now have only had the feeling of an association with the 1920s and 1930s of Noel Coward.
In fact, the Welshman starred in one of Coward’s early plays, ‘Sirocco’ (1927), which explored the notion of free love. And it was of Novello that Coward - in a typical Cowardism - said ‘the two most beautiful things in the world are Ivor's profile and my mind’.
After seeing Robert Altman’s ‘Gosford Park’ (2010) again recently in which Jeremy Northam plays Novello, I decided to finally get up to speed with this to me elusive character.
Reading about this Welshman, I was surprised by the diversity in his career.
He began writing the 250 songs for which is most known at Magdalen College Choir School where he was on a singing scholarship.
In the early 1920s, he took up acting, appearing in romantic melodramas, both on stage and in film.
He was the writer on a number of these ventures and, extraordinarily, wrote the dialogue for the 1932 ‘Tarzan and the Ape Man’ which starred Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan.
His greatest success in this branch of his career was starring in one of Alfred Hitchcock’s first thrillers, ‘The Lodger’, in 1927.
This silent film was based on a story by Marie Belloc Lowndes and a play ‘Who Is He?’ which was co-written by Belloc Lowndes. It involves the hunt for a ‘Jack the Ripper’ type serial killer in London. The wrong man is accused of the crime and is forced to prove his innocence.
I’ve included Novello’s rather startling entrance in this film to the video here.
The composer/actor/writer also appeared in Hitchcock’s lesser known ‘Downhill) in the same year.
With a beautiful speaking voice, Novello made an easy transition to talkies, starring in a re-make of ‘The Lodger’ in 1932.
He also appeared in 'I Lived With You' (1933) as Russian Prince Felix Leeniev. And I’ve included as section of this movie in which he convinces a group of tee-totally women that the vodka he is offering them is a kind of Russian tea - they of course get thoroughly hammered.
Novello then decided to focus on music and theatre, writing and appearing in eight musicals to great critical acclaim, such as ‘Glamorous Night’ (1935), ‘The Dancing Years’ (1939) and ‘Perchance to Dream’ (1945).
This video starts with a set of images of the composer and actor. The audio is what I believe is Novello’s speaking voice grafted over Julie Bryan’s singing ‘My Dearest Dear’ from 'The Dancing Years'.
Then there are the sections from ‘The Lodger’ and ‘I Lived With You’.
Finally, there is newsreel footage of Novello signing autographs for charity at a Theatrical Garden Party on 6th June 1939. And we hear him speak to each donor in turn. It’s a voice of the period but, in addition, is beautifully modulated and caressing - compliant and warmly engaging.

Ivor Novello Awards
The Ivor Novello Awards, named after the Cardiff-born entertainer Ivor Novello, are awards for songwriting and composing. They have been presented annually in London by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) since 1955, and over 1,000 statuettes have been awarded.
History
Nicknamed The Ivors, the awards take place each May and are sponsored by PRS for Music. They are respected worldwide as the major platform for recognising and rewarding Britain and Ireland's songwriting and composing talents. The Ivors remain the only award ceremony in the musical calendar that is not influenced by publishers and record companies, but judged and presented by the writing community.
The Award itself is a solid bronze sculpture of Euterpe, the muse of lyric poetry.

Ivor Novello
David Ivor Davies (15 January 1893 – 6 March 1951), better known as Ivor Novello, was a Welsh composer and actor who became one of the most popular British entertainers of the first half of the 20th century.
He was born into a musical family and his first successes were as a songwriter. His first big hit was "Keep the Home Fires Burning", which was enormously popular during the First World War. His 1917 show, Theodore & Co, was a wartime hit. After the war, Novello contributed numbers to several successful musical comedies and was eventually commissioned to write the scores of complete shows. He wrote his musicals in the style of operetta and often composed his music to the librettos of Christopher Hassall.
In the 1920s, he turned to acting, first in British films and then on stage, with considerable success in both. He starred in two silent films directed by Alfred Hitchcock, The Lodger and Downhill, both in 1927. On stage, he played the title character in the first London production of Liliom (1926). Novello briefly went to Hollywood, but he soon returned to Britain where he had more successes, especially on stage, appearing in his own lavish West End productions of musicals. The best known of these were Glamorous Night (1935) and The Dancing Years (1939). From the 1930s, he often performed with Zena Dare, writing parts for her in his works. He continued to write for film, but he had his biggest late successes with stage musicals: Perchance to Dream (1945), King's Rhapsody (1949) and Gay's the Word (1951).

Ivor Novello (1893-1951) - Welsh Song Writer, Composer and Actor
I’ve always known the name ‘Ivor Novello’ but to now have only had the feeling of an association with the 1920s and 1930s of Noel Coward. In fact, the Welshman starred in one of Coward’s early plays, ‘Sirocco’ (1927), which explored the notion of free love. And it was of Novello that Coward - in a typical Cowardism - said ‘the two most beautiful things in the world are Ivor's profile and my mind’. After seeing Robert Altman’s ‘Gosford Park’ (2010) again recently in which Jeremy Northam plays Novello, I decided to finally get up to speed with this to me elusive character. Reading about this Welshman, I was surprised by the diversity in his career. The selection was commercially released on HMV C.2965. “Keep The Home Fires Burning” as well as “And Her Mother Came Too” are well-known Novello compositions and will be familiar to most viewers of my channel, but the other melodies here are quite delightful too and worth a reprise.
This recording, made by HMV in 1937, is long out-of-copyright and this unique restoration may not be copied or sold without the permission of the channel owner. The transfer from the 78 disc was not the easiest I have done, but I trust that whatever audio imperfections there are will not detract from your listening pleasure.

After seeing Robert Altman’s ‘Gosford Park’ (2010) again recently in which Jeremy Northam plays Novello, I decided to finally get up to speed with this to me elusive character.
Reading about this Welshman, I was surprised by the diversity in his career.
He began writing the 250 songs for which is most known at Magdalen College Choir School where he was on a singing scholarship.
In the early 1920s, he took up acting, appearing in romantic melodramas, both on stage and in film.
He was the writer on a number of these ventures and, extraordinarily, wrote the dialogue for the 1932 ‘Tarzan and the Ape Man’ which starred Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan.
His greatest success in this branch of his career was starring in one of Alfred Hitchcock’s first thrillers, ‘The Lodger’, in 1927.
This silent film was based on a story by Marie Belloc Lowndes and a play ‘Who Is He?’ which was co-written by Belloc Lowndes. It involves the hunt for a ‘Jack the Ripper’ type serial killer in London. The wrong man is accused of the crime and is forced to prove his innocence.
I’ve included Novello’s rather startling entrance in this film to the video here.
The composer/actor/writer also appeared in Hitchcock’s lesser known ‘Downhill) in the same year.
With a beautiful speaking voice, Novello made an easy transition to talkies, starring in a re-make of ‘The Lodger’ in 1932.
He also appeared in 'I Lived With You' (1933) as Russian Prince Felix Leeniev. And I’ve included as section of this movie in which he convinces a group of tee-totally women that the vodka he is offering them is a kind of Russian tea - they of course get thoroughly hammered.
Novello then decided to focus on music and theatre, writing and appearing in eight musicals to great critical acclaim, such as ‘Glamorous Night’ (1935), ‘The Dancing Years’ (1939) and ‘Perchance to Dream’ (1945).
This video starts with a set of images of the composer and actor. The audio is what I believe is Novello’s speaking voice grafted over Julie Bryan’s singing ‘My Dearest Dear’ from 'The Dancing Years'.
Then there are the sections from ‘The Lodger’ and ‘I Lived With You’.
Finally, there is newsreel footage of Novello signing autographs for charity at a Theatrical Garden Party on 6th June 1939. And we hear him speak to each donor in turn. It’s a voice of the period but, in addition, is beautifully modulated and caressing - compliant and warmly engaging.

On Thursday 19 November, double Ivor Novello Award winner Chris Difford delivered on song writing to a full lecture theatre. It was a moment to remember for all in attendance, with one member of staff commenting, "I've worked here for sixteen years and that was the best hour yet". Chris' anecdotes and advice were especially appreciated by the song writers and music production students in the audience. With over 25 years of experience, and a single-minded attitude, Chris has become one of the most successful lyricists of recent times. He first found success as a member of Squeeze with their hit singles including, Cool for Cats, Black Coffee In Bed, Up the Junction and Hourglass.
As a young boy, Chris wrote poetry, inventing stories that would allow him to exercise his vivid imagination and this would later bring him to song writing. When asked about his style of song writing, Chris commented, "Songs are like having kids. If you look after them, some will grow up and become successful. Keep a sharp pencil and a sense of humour. It's like a muscle that needs exercising to keep fit. Writing two or three lyrics a week, my inspiration comes from many places, like when I was down the gym the other day."
During the lecture, Chris played Fat as a Fiddle, a humorous, witty lyrical song, that later brought questions about whether he writes other types of songs. Chris talked about Battersea Boys, a sadder song inspired by a family who put their son into a care home because they thought he was gay.
Chris' anecdotes included stories about being on tour, appearing on Top of the Pops and never being very fashionable, "Squeeze got back together recently, it looked like a bunch of cab drivers having their photo taken". He also talked about some of his collaborations, which have included working with Elton John. He described that particular experience as an amazing process that saw a song idea turn into a melody and lyrics in 3 minutes and was then, recorded and then produced by 5pm on the same day.
Questions from the audience followed remarks Chris had made during the talk, including who he thought were the top song writers of today (Lilly Allen and Jay-Z). The engaging interview style lecture, ended with news on Chris' next project called "Saturday Morning Music Club".
Finally, a real treat was in store as Chris played an acoustic live performance of 'Up The Junction' to end the session.

James Hillier Blount (born 22 February 1974), better known by his stage name James Blunt, is an English singer-songwriter. He had signed with EMI before securing a recording contract with Atlantic Records and Custard Records.
Blunt rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his debut studio album Back to Bedlam, before achieving worldwide fame with the singles "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover". The album sold over 11 million copies worldwide, topping the UK Albums Chart and peaking at number two in the US. Blunt's second album, All the Lost Souls, which was released in 2007, topped the charts in over 20 countries and produced the hit single "1973". His third album, Some Kind of Trouble, was released in 2010, after its lead single Stay the Night. A deluxe edition was released the following year, titled Some Kind of Trouble: Revisited. In 2013, he released his fourth album, Moon Landing, which was preceded by the lead single "Bonfire Heart", which peaked at number four in the UK Singles Chart following promotion on The One Show and The Graham Norton Show, as well as receiving extensive radio airplay.
Blunt has sold over 20 million albums and 17 million singles worldwide, with his debut album, Back to Bedlam, being listed as the best selling album of the 2000s in the UK. Blunt was an officer in the Life Guards, a cavalry regiment of the British Army, and served under NATO in Kosovo during the conflict in 1999. James Hillier Blount (born 22 February 1974), better known by his stage name James Blunt, is an English singer-songwriter. He had signed with EMI before securing a recording contract with Atlantic Records and Custard Records.
Blunt rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his debut studio album Back to Bedlam, before achieving worldwide fame with the singles "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover". The album sold over 11 million copies worldwide, topping the UK Albums Chart and peaking at number two in the US. Blunt's second album, All the Lost Souls, which was released in 2007, topped the charts in over 20 countries and produced the hit single "1973". His third album, Some Kind of Trouble, was released in 2010, after its lead single Stay the Night. A deluxe edition was released the following year, titled Some Kind of Trouble: Revisited. In 2013, he released his fourth album, Moon Landing, which was preceded by the lead single "Bonfire Heart", which peaked at number four in the UK Singles Chart following promotion on The One Show and The Graham Norton Show, as well as receiving extensive radio airplay.
Blunt has sold over 20 million albums and 17 million singles worldwide, with his debut album, Back to Bedlam, being listed as the best selling album of the 2000s in the UK. He has received several awards and nominations, having won two Brit Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards as well as receiving five Grammy Award nominations.
Blunt was an officer in the Life Guards, a cavalry regiment of the British Army, and served under NATO in Kosovo during the conflict in 1999.
