Review by Steve Huey: Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B; that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history. What the elitists missed, though, was that Black Byrd was the moment when Byrd's brand of fusion finally stepped out from under the shadow of his chief influence, Miles Davis, and found a distinctive voice of its own. Never before had a jazz musician embraced the celebratory sound and style of contemporary funk as fully as Byrd did here -- not even Davis, whose dark, chaotic jungle-funk stood in sharp contrast to the bright, breezy, danceable music on Black Byrd. Byrd gives free rein to producer/arranger/composer Larry Mizell, who crafts a series of tightly focused, melodic pieces often indebted to the lengthier orchestrations of Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. They're built on the most straightforward funk rhythms Byrd had yet tackled, and if the structures aren't as loose or complex as his earlier fusion material, they make up for it with a funky sense of groove that's damn near irresistible. Byrd's solos are mostly melodic and in-the-pocket, but that allows the funk to take center stage. Sure, maybe the electric piano, sound effects, and Roger Glenn's ubiquitous flute date the music somewhat, but that's really part of its charm. Black Byrd was state-of-the-art for its time, and it set a new standard for all future jazz/R&B;/funk fusions -- of which there were many. Byrd would continue to refine this sound on equally essential albums like Street Lady and the fantastic Places and Spaces, but Black Byrd stands as his groundbreaking signature statement.

BLACKBYRD TAKE FLIGHT
Every now and again a new group appears that changes the face of pop culture for the better. With their first single "All For Me" already sprinting up the charts, BlackByrd are set to entrench themselves in the hearts and minds of everyone who loves great, original and thought-provoking pop.
Hot on the heels of signing a record deal with EMI MUSIC, the dynamic trio is getting cosy with the charts thanks to their inspired and stirring hit single.
Made up of three dynamic young Capetonians, Tarryn Lamb, Samantha Heldsinger and Tamsyn Maker, as BlackByrd, all have spent the past three years working towards the moment when EMI Music signed them to their major label and turned their lives around irrevocably.
Taking their name from the classic Beatles track, BlackByrd are in the process of turning adult-contemporary pop convention on its head, thanks to Lamb's new-found talent as a critical songwriter. "We've all grown, as people and entertainers," Lamb says. "We're artists now, and loving every minute."
Since January 2012, BlackByrd, along with promoter and music-industry veteran Mike Fuller as manager, have been creating a body of work that will be released as 13-track debut album this September.
Quick to be attracted to great talent, Mark Beling (Mean Mr Mustard) produced the fiery first single and album. "Tarryn wrote all the tracks on the album, with the exception of country classic "Reason To Believe" (made famous by Rod Stewart), Heldsinger points out. Titled Strong, BlackByrd's debut album, like "All For Me", is filled with real emotion, powerful lyrics, and a level of genuine spirituality that's as rare as their combined pool of talent.
Everything Lamb, Heldsinger and Maker touch provokes response. "Our overriding messages on "All For Me", as with all the tracks on the album, are positive," Lamb explains. "It's all about not looking back, and focusing on what the future holds."
An exciting, life-changing voyage that in its infancy has already seen a groundswell of support for the three warm, engaging, fun-loving and fetching threesome. Their musical crusade now well underway, BlackByrd's mission "to take on the world!" as Maker says, has truly begun!

Black Byrd
Black Byrd is a 1973 album by Donald Byrd and his first for Blue Note Records produced by Larry Mizell, assisted by his brother, former Motown producer Fonce. In the jazz funk idiom, it is among Blue Note Records' best selling album releases. The title of the album inspired the name of Byrd's apprentice group, The Blackbyrds.

Donald Byrd
Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd is also notable for his influential role in the early career of keyboard player and composer Herbie Hancock.
Biography
Early life and career
Byrd attended Cass Technical High School. He performed with Lionel Hampton before finishing high school. After playing in a military band during a term in the United States Air Force, Byrd obtained a bachelor's degree in music from Wayne State University and a master's degree from Manhattan School of Music. While still at the Manhattan School, he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, as replacement for Clifford Brown. In 1955, he recorded with Gigi Gryce Jackie McLean and Mal Waldron. After leaving the Jazz Messengers in 1956, he performed with many leading jazz musicians of the day, including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and later Herbie Hancock. Byrd's first regular group was a quintet that he co-led from 1958 to 1961 with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, an ensemble whose hard-driving performances are captured "live" on At the Half Note Cafe.

Mike Fuller
Michael Darwin Fuller (born April 7, 1953) is a former American football safety who played eight seasons in the National Football League after playing college football at Auburn University. While at Auburn, he was named to the All-SEC first team for the 1973 and 1974 seasons.
Fuller's main role in the NFL was a kick returner on special teams. In his 8 NFL seasons, he gained 1,701 yards returning kickoffs and 2,660 yards returning punts, with 2 touchdowns and a 10.6 yards per return average. Fuller recorded a 27-yard punt return in a 1981 AFC divisional playoff game against the Buffalo Bills and a 17-yard punt return in Super Bowl XVI.
As a safety, he intercepted 17 passes, which he returned for 176 yards and a touchdown, and recovered 14 fumbles (9 on offense, 5 on defense).

The Bottom
The Bottom (formerly Botte) is the capital and largest town of the island of Saba, the Caribbean Netherlands, and is the first stop on the way from Saba's Port in Fort Bay towards the rest of the island. It has approximately 500 inhabitants of the total 1,991 islanders.
History
The original name of the town was De Botte, old Dutch for "The Bowl", referring to its geographical position in a valley surrounded by the various Mountains. "The Bottom" is an English variation of this name.
Infrastructure
The Bottom is home to the government offices, a hospital, a nursing home, a sports field, three churches, a library, various shops and the 200 students of the Saba University School of Medicine.
Events
As capital of the island, The Bottom hosts a number of events throughout the year. During the summer the 'Saba Carnival' is held here. It's a parade full of colour accompanied with the music of steel drums and local artists. It is a highly anticipated event on the Saban calendar as most of the island meets together to dance, sing and enjoy the festival. The Saba Carnival usually lasts for a few days in which the island focuses on The Bottom.

Review by Steve Huey: Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B; that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history. What the elitists missed, though, was that Black Byrd was the moment when Byrd's brand of fusion finally stepped out from under the shadow of his chief influence, Miles Davis, and found a distinctive voice of its own. Never before had a jazz musician embraced the celebratory sound and style of contemporary funk as fully as Byrd did here -- not even Davis, whose dark, chaotic jungle-funk stood in sharp contrast to the bright, breezy, danceable music on Black Byrd. Byrd gives free rein to producer/arranger/composer Larry Mizell, who crafts a series of tightly focused, melodic pieces often indebted to the lengthier orchestrations of Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. They're built on the most straightforward funk rhythms Byrd had yet tackled, and if the structures aren't as loose or complex as his earlier fusion material, they make up for it with a funky sense of groove that's damn near irresistible. Byrd's solos are mostly melodic and in-the-pocket, but that allows the funk to take center stage. Sure, maybe the electric piano, sound effects, and Roger Glenn's ubiquitous flute date the music somewhat, but that's really part of its charm. Black Byrd was state-of-the-art for its time, and it set a new standard for all future jazz/R&B;/funk fusions -- of which there were many. Byrd would continue to refine this sound on equally essential albums like Street Lady and the fantastic Places and Spaces, but Black Byrd stands as his groundbreaking signature statement.

Taking their name from the classic Beatles track, BlackByrd are in the process of turning adult-contemporary pop convention on its head, thanks to Lamb's new-found talent as a critical songwriter. "We've all grown, as people and entertainers," Lamb says. "We're artists now, and loving every minute."
Since January 2012, BlackByrd, along with promoter and music-industry veteran Mike Fuller as manager, have been creating a body of work that will be released as 13-track debut album this September.
Quick to be attracted to great talent, Mark Beling (Mean Mr Mustard) produced the fiery first single and album. "Tarryn wrote all the tracks on the album, with the exception of country classic "Reason To Believe" (made famous by Rod Stewart), Heldsinger points out. Titled Strong, BlackByrd's debut album, like "All For Me", is filled with real emotion, powerful lyrics, and a level of genuine spirituality that's as rare as their combined pool of talent.
Everything Lamb, Heldsinger and Maker touch provokes response. "Our overriding messages on "All For Me", as with all the tracks on the album, are positive," Lamb explains. "It's all about not looking back, and focusing on what the future holds."
