The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by The Velvet Underground and vocal collaborator Nico. It was originally released in March 1967 by Verve Records. Recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, The Velvet Underground & Nico would gain notoriety for its experimentalist performance sensibilities, as well as its focus on controversial subject matter expressed in many of their songs.
Though a commercial failure upon release, the record has since become one of the most influential and critically acclaimed rock albums in history, appearing at number thirteen on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time as well as being added to the 2006 National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
The Velvet Underground & Nico was recorded with the first professional line-up of The Velvet Underground, including Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen "Moe" Tucker. For this record Nico was included, who would occasionally sing lead with the band at the instigation of their mentor and manager, Andy Warhol. Nico sang lead on three of the album's tracks—"Femme Fatale", "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "I'll Be Your Mirror"—and back-up on "Sunday Morning". In 1966, as the album was being recorded, this was also the line-up for their live performances as a part of Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable.
The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000.
Soon after recording, Dolph sent an acetate disc of the recordings to Columbia in an attempt to interest them in distributing the album, but they declined, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Eventually, the MGM Records-owned Verve Records accepted the recordings with the help of Verve staff producer Tom Wilson, who had recently moved from a job at Columbia.
With the affirmation of a label, three of the songs, "I'm Waiting for the Man", "Venus in Furs" and "Heroin", were re-recorded in two days at T.T.G. Studios during a stay in Hollywood later in 1966. As the record's release date was bumped back time after time because of production problems, Wilson also took them into a New York studio in November 1966 to add a final song to the track listing: the single "Sunday Morning". The production on that song is far more professional and lush, aimed as it was at radio playtime.

The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground was an American rock band, active between 1964 and 1973, formed in New York City. The group achieved little commercial success during its career, but is now recognized as one of the most important and influential of its era. The group was briefly managed by Andy Warhol, and served as the house band at the Silver Factory and Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967. The provocative subject matter, musical experimentation, and often nihilistic attitudes explored in their music proved influential in the development of punk rock and alternative music.
Their 1967 debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico featured German singer and collaborator Nico and was called the "most prophetic rock album ever made" by Rolling Stone in 2003. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the band No. 19 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 by Patti Smith.

Black Angel
Black Angel is a 1946 film noir, based on the novel The Black Angel by Cornell Woolrich. The film was director Roy William Neill's last film.
Synopsis
A falsely convicted man's wife, Catherine (June Vincent), and an alcoholic composer and pianist, Martin (Dan Duryea), team up in an attempt to clear her husband of the murder of a blonde singer, Mavis Marlowe (Constance Dowling), who had been Martin's wife. Their investigation leads them to face-to-face confrontations with a determined policeman, Captain Flood (Broderick Crawford), and a shifty nightclub owner, Mr. Marko, (Peter Lorre), who Catherine and Martin suspect may be the real killer.

The Angels (Australian band)
The Angels are an Australian rock band that formed in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1974. The band later relocated to Sydney and enjoyed huge local success, clocking up hit singles across four decades, including "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again", "Take a Long Line", "Marseilles", "Shadow Boxer", "No Secrets", "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", "Let The Night Roll On", and "Dogs Are Talking".
The Angels were cited by Guns N' Roses and a number of Seattle grunge bands, including Pearl Jam and Nirvana, as having influenced their music. In the international market, to avoid legal problems with the Casablanca Records' act Angel, their records were released under the names Angel City and later The Angels from Angel City.
Lead singer Doc Neeson who fronted the band from 1974-1999 left pre-Millenium due to spinal injuries sustained in a car accident. After spending most of the 2000s apart, in April 2008, the original 1970s line-up of The Angels reformed for a series of tours.

This brings the excellent stuff found in the original tapes from the Velvets series of shows at the Matrix club in San Francisco, in November 1969. Here is the mother lode – all the available music, in excellent recordings. It’s fascinating stuff, even for those for whom a 37-minute version of Sister Ray is pushing it a bit. It’s actually where the band stretch out that it becomes most fascinating – this isn’t a fierce, confrontational noise band, but a group finding a groove and locking into it – it becomes almost proto-motorik at times. One version of I’m Waiting for the Man expands to 14 minutes, Lou Reed throwing in extra verses, followed by a nine-minute What Goes On; another show, meanwhile, opens with the same two songs, but dispenses with them both in 10 minutes. "Sunday Morning" is a song by The Velvet Underground. It is the opening track on their 1967 debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico. It was also released as a single in 1966 with "Femme Fatale". In late 1966, "Sunday Morning" was the final song to be recorded for The Velvet Underground & Nico. It was requested by Tom Wilson, who thought the album needed another song with lead vocals by Nico with the potential to be a successful single. The song was written with Nico's voice in mind by Lou Reed and John Cale on, in fact, a Sunday morning. The band previously performed it live with Nico singing lead, but when it came time to record it, Lou Reed sang the lead vocal. This brings the excellent stuff found in the original tapes from the Velvets series of shows at the Matrix club in San Francisco, in November 1969. Here is the mother lode – all the available music, in excellent recordings. It’s fascinating stuff, even for those for whom a 37-minute version of Sister Ray is pushing it a bit. It’s actually where the band stretch out that it becomes most fascinating – this isn’t a fierce, confrontational noise band, but a group finding a groove and locking into it – it becomes almost proto-motorik at times. One version of I’m Waiting for the Man expands to 14 minutes, Lou Reed throwing in extra verses, followed by a nine-minute What Goes On; another show, meanwhile, opens with the same two songs, but dispenses with them both in 10 minutes. It all goes to show a band who were treating each set differently, as a chance to try different things within the same framework – a group who could improvise or just play rock’n’roll, as the mood took them. And those who sniff at the post-John Cale lineup should listen to the tense, creepy versions of Venus in Furs here – proof that the Velvets were always more than the sum of their parts.

Wall-to-wall hippies, bikers, Harvard students, Northeastern students, fashion models, professors, drug dealers, art teachers, groupies, MIT students, photographers, local thugs, local disc jockeys, skinny-bohemian-artist girls, visiting dignitaries from the New York art scene, and the royalty of the Boston music set — the local singers and guitar-players in their mod suits strolling around with their beautiful girlfriends." Rock And Roll, indeed.
The bootleg of this January show is probably the best fidelity of the various audience tapes made in 1969 at the Boston Tea Party. Not to say it's fantastic — it's still a 43-year-old audience tape — but crank it up and it's highly listenable. And it's a phenomenal performance, with the Velvets shifting effortlessly from the lowdown noise boogie of "Run Run Run" and "White Light/White Heat" to hymn-like renditions of "I'm Set Free" and "Candy Says". While an instrumental version of "Move Right In" appeared on the Another View odds-n-sods compilation, the one that appears here is the definitive reading, with Moe Tucker raving up a storm. Naturally, the megalithic "Sister Ray" closes out the set, offering a twisted, 21-minute trip through parts unknown. I'll give the last word to Richman: "[S]ometimes you just plain couldn't figure out where on the stage those strange sounds and harmonics were coming from, because of the eerie calm with which they played and improvised in front of you, and because every time they'd come to town they'd introduce at least one new song that would, for better or worse, sound like nothing else that had gone before in rock music."

In fact, the song's inclusion on the album seems to be an afterthought — the final master tape of side one of the album shows "Sunday Morning" only penciled in before "I'm Waiting for the Man".
The song's prominent use of celesta was the idea of John Cale, who noticed the instrument in the studio and decided to use it for the song.

This brings the excellent stuff found in the original tapes from the Velvets series of shows at the Matrix club in San Francisco, in November 1969. Here is the mother lode – all the available music, in excellent recordings. It’s fascinating stuff, even for those for whom a 37-minute version of Sister Ray is pushing it a bit. It’s actually where the band stretch out that it becomes most fascinating – this isn’t a fierce, confrontational noise band, but a group finding a groove and locking into it – it becomes almost proto-motorik at times. One version of I’m Waiting for the Man expands to 14 minutes, Lou Reed throwing in extra verses, followed by a nine-minute What Goes On; another show, meanwhile, opens with the same two songs, but dispenses with them both in 10 minutes. It all goes to show a band who were treating each set differently, as a chance to try different things within the same framework – a group who could improvise or just play rock’n’roll, as the mood took them. And those who sniff at the post-John Cale lineup should listen to the tense, creepy versions of Venus in Furs here – proof that the Velvets were always more than the sum of their parts.

In February 2008, the second Velvet Underground rarity appeared. This was a live concert of the band, one month after the release of The Velvet Underground & Nico. Yes music fans, this is a show from 1967, 46 years ago and just shy of falling into the Public Domain.
For the second appearance, the collector pressed 100 copies of the rare tape to green vinyl and went online to sell it. This time, we presume a big-hearted collector ripped the vinyl and shared the contents as MP3s online. We all had the opportunity to give this show a listen.
The fan who shared the lossless version at Hunger City offered more info on The Gymnasium soundboard tape(s):
“First to surface from the Gymnasium tape(s) was Guess I’m Falling In Love (supposedly listed as Fever In My Pocket on the original tape box), broadcast on WPIX FM by John Cale on June 3, 1979. After playing this version he clearly states that it is from a tape he stumbled across. He definitely says ‘Gymnasium, April 1967'. Cale also said in some interviews he owns the tape of the entire Gymnasium show, including Walk It As You Talk It with a really good guitar sound.
“Guess I’m Falling In Love [version 1] (4:09)Sources: And So On LP, Everything You’ve Ever Heard… 3LP, Collector’s Dream CD, The Psychopath’s Rolling Stones CD, A True Rock ‘n Roller CD, Ultra Rare Trax Vol.3 CD, Caught Between The Twisted Stars 4CD.
“Two others tracks surfaced in the ’90s - Booker T. orginally appeared on the John Cale Paris S’Eveille CDEP in 1991 and was reissued (unfortunately with 8 seconds amputated at the beginning) on the Peel Slowly And See box set, along with an alternate version of Guess I’m Falling In Love. This version sounds clearly different as compared with the WPIX version and has some lyrics differences (the box set version begins with ‘I got fever…’ while the ‘old’ version begins with ‘I got MY fever…’).”
The above establishes that Guess I’m Falling In Love from this show is different from the officially released version. While the version of Booker T here is complete. Get the Peel Slowly And See box set for the official versions. This show also contains the first live performance of Sister Ray, at the time still unreleased. The reason for the confusion is that the band played several dates at The Gymnasium, April 14-16, 21-23 and 28-30, 1967. Some of the other shows were probably recorded.
What’s interesting about this show, aside from the never released I’m Not A Young Man Anymore, is the band and Reed’s attitude. The voice is unpleasant, the band flings everything and the kitchen sink, the mix grates with its “wall of sound” harshness but the beauty is in its ugliness. In the face of a Britpop invasion, Reed and the Velvets were determined to be different. No compromise. No sweet pop song at this gig.

For this record Nico was included, who would occasionally sing lead with the band at the instigation of their mentor and manager, Andy Warhol. Nico sang lead on three of the album's tracks—"Femme Fatale", "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "I'll Be Your Mirror"—and back-up on "Sunday Morning". In 1966, as the album was being recorded, this was also the line-up for their live performances as a part of Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable.
The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000.
Soon after recording, Dolph sent an acetate disc of the recordings to Columbia in an attempt to interest them in distributing the album, but they declined, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Eventually, the MGM Records-owned Verve Records accepted the recordings with the help of Verve staff producer Tom Wilson, who had recently moved from a job at Columbia.
With the affirmation of a label, three of the songs, "I'm Waiting for the Man", "Venus in Furs" and "Heroin", were re-recorded in two days at T.T.G. Studios during a stay in Hollywood later in 1966.
