Harold Budd (born May 24, 1936) is an American avant-garde composer and poet. He was born in Los Angeles, and raised in the Mojave Desert. He has developed a style of playing piano he terms "soft pedal".
Budd's career as a composer began in 1962. In the following years, he gained a notable reputation in the local avant-garde community. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Southern California (having studied under Ingolf Dahl) with a degree in musical composition. As he progressed, his compositions became increasingly minimalist. Among his more experimental works were two drone music pieces, "Coeur d'Orr" and "The Oak of the Golden Dreams". After composing a long-form gong solo titled "Lirio", he felt he had reached the limits of his experiments in minimalism and the avant-garde. He retired temporarily from composition in 1970 and began a teaching career at the California Institute of the Arts.[1]
"The road from my first colored graph piece in 1962 to my renunciation of composing in 1970 to my resurfacing as a composer in 1972 was a process of trying out an idea and when it was obviously successful abandoning it. The early graph piece was followed by the Rothko orchestra work, the pieces for Source Magazine, the Feldman-derived chamber works, the pieces typed out or written in longhand, the out-and-out conceptual works among other things, and the model drone works (which include the sax and organ "Coeur d'Orr" and "The Oak of the Golden Dreams", the latter based on the Balinese "Slendro" scale which scale I used again 18 years later on "The Real Dream of Sails").
Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno,RDI (/ˈiːnoʊ/; born 15 May 1948 and originally christened Brian Peter George Eno), professionally known as Brian Eno or simply Eno, is an English musician, composer, record producer, singer, and visual artist, known as one of the principal innovators of ambient music. Born in Suffolk, Eno studied under Roy Ascott at Ipswich Civic College and later attended Colchester Institute art school in Essex, England, taking inspiration from minimalist painting, cybernetics, and experimental music techniques during his time there. He joined the band Roxy Music as synthesiser player in the early 1970s. The group's success in the glam rock scene came quickly, but Eno soon became tired of touring and of conflicts with lead singer Bryan Ferry, leaving the group in 1973 to record innovative solo albums that would explore various styles and help pioneer ambient music.
Throughout the 1970s, Eno also worked as an influential collaborator and music producer, collaborating with Robert Fripp on the LPs (No Pussyfooting) (1973) and Evening Star (1975), David Bowie on his acclaimed "Berlin Trilogy," avant-garde musicians Jon Hassell and Harold Budd on several respective projects, and David Byrne on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (released 1981), and further producing the acclaimed "No Wave" compilation No New York (1978), three albums by New York post-punk group Talking Heads, and albums by new wave bands Devo and Ultravox, among others. In subsequent decades, he has produced or worked on albums by U2, James, Laurie Anderson, Coldplay, Paul Simon, Grace Jones, James Blake and Slowdive, among others. Eno has also pursued multimedia ventures in parallel to his music career, including his mid-1970s development of "Oblique Strategies" (written with Peter Schmidt), a deck of cards featuring cryptic aphorisms intended to break creative blocks and encourage lateral thinking.

Minimalist composer and ambient pianist Harold Budd talks with Geary Yelton about performing at Moogfest, touring the world, and his musical relationship with producer Brian Eno. At Eno’s insistence, he moved from the Los Angeles area to London where he could make a living as a composer. Consequently, he said, “I owe Brian everything.”
Opal Evenings were concerts show-casing the work of artists who were managed by Opal in the latter part of the 1980s (and others). The University believes that this report dates from 1987 although it might easily be 1988. Brian Eno is interviewed, and there are extracts from performances by Roger Eno and Harold Budd, plus music from Michael Brook.

This was record label Samadhisound's second podcast. For some reason it no longer appears on iTunes, and it finds a second home within the University's archives. Harold Budd's "final" album "Avalon Sutra" had been published on Samadhisound in 2004, although at the time of writing it is on the Darla Records label. Revenue from ads accompanying this video goes to [Merlin] Morr Music on behalf of Root Strata for Harold Budd's piece "Templar" at the start of the podcast, not the University. This semester the University of Ambience will present a few ancient interviews for research purposes. Read on... On Thursday 13th March 1980 Charles Amirkhanian interviewed Brian Eno for the KPFA program "The Morning Concert", with contributions from Ray Holbert. It was Eno's second visit to the station in a matter of months: the two had also conducted a long interview on 2nd February (if students wish to find audio of that discussion, they should search the Internet for Brian Eno Day). This interview is rare in that Brian Eno discussed The Plateaux Of Mirror in some detail - the album was due for release in the following weeks. Charles Amirkhanian also played an early Harold Budd piece. David Byrne joined them later in the program. If students enjoy this presentation, the Faculty sug...

[Lyrics Harold Budd - Cedars of Lebanon] Yesterday I spent asleep Woke up in my clothes in a dirty heap Spent the night trying to make a deadline Squeezing complicated lives into a simple headline I have your face in an old Polaroid Tidying the childrens clothes and toys You smiling back at me I took the photo from the fridge Can't remember what Emily did Haven't been with a woman, it feels like, for years Thought of you the whole time, your salty tears This shitty world sometimes produces a rose The scent of it lingers but then it just goes Return the call to home The worst of us are a long drawn-out confession The best of us are geniuses of compression You say you're not gonna leave the truth alone I'm here 'cause I don't wanna go home Child drinking dirty water fr...
