Casale Monferrato

Casale Monferrato (Italian pronunciation: [kaˈzaːle moɱferˈraːto]) is a town in the Piedmont region in Italy, in the province of Alessandria. It is situated about 60 km (37 mi) east of Turin on the right bank of the Po, where the river runs at the foot of the Montferrat hills. Beyond the river lies the vast plain of the Po valley.

Since it became a Roman municipium the town has been the most important center of the zone. After a spell of decline, due to the fall of the Roman Empire and the barbaric invasion, Casale became a free municipality and from the 15th century to the 16th century was the capital of the Palaiologos. Then the Gonzaga got hold of the town and built one of the biggest and most important citadel of Europe. In the 17th century and the 18th century was besieged by both the Spanish and French armies, interested in its strategical position; during Italian unification Casale has been one of the defensive bulwarks against the Austrian Empire.

Today Casale, in the middle of the industrial triangle Turin-Milan-Genoa, is an important industrial center, known for the production of cement and the closed factory Eternit, that produced the homonymous material, very dangerous due to the presence of asbestos. Thousands of inhabitants of Casale have died from mesothelioma, a fatal disease caused by the breathing of asbestos. In 2012, former executives and Eternit shareholders Stephan Schmidheiny and Louis de Cartier were ordered to pay $32.5 million to the town of Casale Monferrato after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter for exposing workers and townspeople to asbestos.

Mens Sana 1871 Basket

Mens Sana 1871 Basket is an Italian professional basketball club based in Siena. It is a section of the sports club Polisportiva Mens Sana, founded in 1871.

Under the name Montepaschi Siena, derived from sponsor Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the club was a dominant presence in the Italian Serie A, winning an unprecedented 7 titles in a row until 2013 whilst also challenging for titles in Europe. After financial problems caused the club to go bankrupt in 2014, it moved down to the fourth division. From the 2015-16 season it will play in the second division.

History

Early history (1871-1967)

The parent organisation, Associazione Ginnastica Senese "Mens Sana in Corpore Sano 1871", was formed on 16 April 1871 by university students. In the beginning of the XIXth century the gymnastics club became a multi-sports club (Italian: Polisportiva) by adding other sports under its wing.

Basketball was first practiced by the club in May 1907 when - at the Venice Gymnastics competition - teacher Ida Nomi Pesciolini led a women's team in a basketball demonstration. It's claimed this was the first time the game - invented in 1891 - was played in Italy, with Nomi discovering the sport whilst in the United Kingdom and then translating the rules in Italian.

A.S. Junior Pallacanestro Casale

Associazione Sportiva Junior Pallacanestro Casale Monferrato, also known for sponsorship reasons as Novipiù Casale Monferrato is an Italian professional basketball team based in Casale Monferrato, Piedmont. It plays in the second division Serie A2 as of the 2015-16 season.

History

Associazione Sportiva Junior Libertas Pallacanestro was founded in 1956 and took part in the regional Prima Divisione that same season. It reached the second division in less than ten years. Back in the fourth division Serie B2 in 2000-01, the club earned a promotion to the Serie B d'Eccellenza that season. Winning that league's cup in 2005, Junior was promoted to the second division LegaDue as well after beating Forlì in the playoff finals on 2 June 2005. The side would reach the promotion playoffs five times in the next six seasons, with two semifinal exits their best results until 2010-11 where they won the regular season before downing Reyer Venezia in the final to move up to the first division Serie A. The club would be relegated after one season, finishing last in 2011-12.

Serie A (Italian pronunciation: [ˈsɛːrje ˈa]), also called Serie A TIM due to sponsorship by Telecom Italia, is a professional league competition for football clubs located at the top of the Italian football league system and has been operating for over eighty years since the 1929–30 season. It had been organized by Lega Calcio until 2010, but a new league, the Lega Serie A, was created for the 2010–11 season. Serie A is regarded as one of the best football leagues in the world and it is often depicted as the most tactical national league. Serie A is the world's second strongest national league according to IFFHS and has produced the highest number of European Cup finalists: Italian clubs have reached the final of the competition on a record twenty-six different occasions, winning the title twelve times. Serie A is ranked 4th among European leagues according to UEFA's league coefficient behind La Liga, Bundesliga and Premier League, which is based on the performance of Italian clubs in the Champions League and the Europa League during the last five years. Serie A led the UEFA ranking from 1986 to 1988 and from 1990 to 1999.
