La Complainte du Partisan
"La Complainte du Partisan" ("The Partisan") is a song about the French Resistance in World War II. The song was written in 1943 in London by Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie and the music by Anna Marly.
It is often confused with the Chant des Partisans, written by Joseph Kessel and Maurice Druon, composed by Anna Marly, which became the unofficial anthem of the French Resistance.
Adaptation and covers
Originally written in French, it has been adapted in English with lyrics by Hy Zaret and covered by diverse artists, including Leonard Cohen, Les Compagnons de la chanson, Goteki, Joan Baez, Buffy Sainte-Marie, 16 Horsepower, Po' Girl, Branimir Štulić, Arsen Dedić, Jaromír Nohavica, Electrelane, The Swell Season, Other Lives, American Steel, Mick Gordon with Tex Perkins.

Mick Gordon
Mick Gordon (born 1970) is a Northern Irish theatre director, playwright and essayist. He is currently artistic director of Aarhus Teater, Denmark.
Personal
Mick Gordon was born in Belfast. He graduated from Wadham College, Oxford in 1991, with a First Class Honours Degree in Modern History. Since 2012 he lives in Denmark, with his wife Sophie Hayles.
Career
Gordon was Trevor Nunn's Associate Director at the Royal National Theatre in London and was Director of the National’s "Transformation Season". Previously he was Director of the Gate Theatre in London. He founded the charitable theatre company On Theatre to work in collaboration with experts from fields such as neurology, psychology, philosophy and theology. He has produced and directed over 100 theatre productions. He is the author of eight plays, and a collection of essays. His mentors are Peter Brook and Brian Friel.

Red Army
The Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (Russian: Рабоче-крестьянская Красная армия; РККА, or Raboche-krest'yanskaya Krasnaya armiya: RKKA, frequently shortened in Russian to Красная aрмия; KA, in English: Red Army) was the army and the air force of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and after 1922 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The army was established immediately after the 1917 October Revolution (Red October or Bolshevik Revolution). The Bolsheviks raised an army to oppose the military confederations (especially the various groups collectively known as the White Army) of their adversaries during the Russian Civil War. Beginning in February 1946, the Red Army, along with the Soviet Navy, embodied the main component of the Soviet Armed Forces; taking the official name of "Soviet Army" (Russian: Советская Армия (СА)/Sovetskaya Armija), until its dissolution in December 1991.
The Red Army is credited as being the decisive land force in the Allied victory in the European theatre of World War II. During operations on the Eastern Front, it fought 75%–80% of the German land forces (Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS) deployed in the war.

The Alexandrov Ensemble does not recognize MVD Ensemble as an "Red Army Choir" and has expressed indignation at the MVD Ensemble's claims of inheriting the Red Army Choir tradition. Although the MVD Ensemble was never associated with the Red Army in Russia during Soviet times, many Western audiences came to associate the MVD Ensemble with the Alexandrov Ensemble due to their similar repertoire and wearing of uniforms during performances.

The greatest battles of World War II, the most colossal encounters of military force,
the most devastating human losses which the modern world has ever seen, occurred on Russian soil during
1941-1945, on a battlefield that is unknown to most Americans. The conflict between Hitler's Germany and
Stalin's Russia claimed more than 30 million lives.
On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front
that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi
high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks.
In reality, The Unknown War raged on for nearly four years. Before it finished, the Nazis and Soviets fought
the single greatest campaign in military history. The Unknown War covers that period of history beginning in
June 1941, when Germany launched its surprise attack on Russia, through to the end of the war.
The Unknown War was a landmark television series, detailing the drama of the Eastern European front during
World War II. Academy Award Winner Burt Lancaster hosts the 20 part series. Film footage from Soviet archives
comprises a major portion of the series, supplemented by film from both the United States and British archives.
Burt Lancaster spent three weeks in eight cities in Russia, for location filming.
The Unknown War was made as a counter to the deliberate distortions in the Anglo-American series The World At War,
which chose to give as much coverage to the US in Italy as it did to the Red Army at war from the Arctic to the
Black Sea. So blatant was the politically motivated distortion in The World At War that the Soviet authorities
ultimately refused to cooperate in its production. Instead they set out to make a documentary series of their own
that would tell the real story of the War in the East.
The Eastern (Russian) Front of WW2 has been side-lined in the Western media for decades, reduced to just "one aspect"
of the War, if it is even mentioned at all. Certainly there is never any recognition given to the fact that it was the
main, decisive arena of WW2, the scene of a titanic struggle that, at the cost of 30 million Soviet lives, saved the
world from fascism.
Made by the USSR's Central Documentary Film Studios, The Unknown War dealt exhaustively with the war on the Soviet front.
Narrated by Burt Lancaster, who also appeared on camera, the series featured interviews with many participants from numerous
battles, partisan campaigns and SS massacres. It showed the destruction, the sacrifice and the heroism, and also the pride
in their colossal achievement. As Stalin said in one of his communications to Churchill, "Hitler has 25 divisions in
North Africa; I have 250 in the Soviet Union."
Unfortunately, the Western TV networks and distributors who bought The Unknown War for telecast were not prepared to mount
the kind of publicity campaigns needed to overcome 30 years of lies, distortion and simple suppression of the facts about
the Soviet role in WW2.

When the Operation Chung-ryong fails and Lee Tae and his men find themselves on the run from the punitive forces. Injured while on the run, Lee Tae is taken care by Park Min-ja and they soon fall in love. But when he is called back to duty by headquarters, they are forced to go their separate ways. As the winter weather worsens, Lee Tae and his men fight in the Yakdam Peak battle and there he meets the poet Kim Young. They discuss the futility of fighting one's own people. The North Korean partisan in South Korea cornered in the hills of Mt. Jiri and there he meets the legendary Commander Lee Hyun-sang. He is also astonished by Kim Hee-sook's courage. From this point on, he becomes an official member of the political party of the partisan. When the news of a truce is heard, the members are thrown into turmoil. Hunger and the weather drive them to destitution and during the last battle Lee Tae is taken prisoner by the punitive forces. His long battle for the partisan comes to a close.
