By far, the biggest shock of the day came courtesy of the Magpies who defeated premiership favourites Geelong at the MCG!

Collingwood have started this season woefully, with their only wins coming against lowly Richmond, Essendon and Brisbane.

Yet, by quarter-time they were 44 points ahead of the Cats who had only lost one game leading into this contest.

Geelong clawed their way back to within a few kicks late in the game, but Nathan Buckley's men kicked clear to record one of the upsets of the season and, incredibly, be only one game outside the top eight by the end of the round.

The other four matches went as expected with North Melbourne opening up a two-game buffer at the top of the ladder following their comprehensive 67-point win over Carlton.

The Kangas are now 9-0 for the first time in their history.

West Coast finally took a scalp on the road after beating Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval to move to sixth spot on the ladder.

Adelaide made light work of a decimated Gold Coast outfit, beating them by 75 points, to ensure they stay inside the top eight for another week (barring a Melbourne massacre of Brisbane tomorrow).

And Richmond kept their hopes of an unlikely finals berth alive with their second win on the trot - a 38-point mauling of Fremantle.

The Dockers have slumped to 0-9, 12 months after being 9-0!

Freo have certainly undergone one of the biggest falls from grace in VFL/AFL history. They are still below Essendon on the ladder! Who would have picked that pre-season after nine rounds?
