Ani
Ani (Armenian: Անի; Greek: Ἄνιον, Ánion;Latin: Abnicum;Georgian: ანისი, Anisi;Turkish: Ani) is a ruined medieval Armenian city situated in the Turkish province of Kars near the border with Armenia.
Between 961 and 1045, it was the capital of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom that covered much of present-day Armenia and eastern Turkey. Called the "City of 1001 Churches", Ani stood on various trade routes and its many religious buildings, palaces, and fortifications were amongst the most technically and artistically advanced structures in the world. At its height, the population of Ani probably was on the order of 100,000.
Long ago renowned for its splendor and magnificence, Ani was sacked by the Mongols in 1236 and devastated in a 1319 earthquake, after which it was reduced to a village and gradually abandoned and largely forgotten by the seventeenth century. Ani is a widely recognized cultural, religious, and national heritage symbol for Armenians. According to Razmik Panossian, Ani is one of the most visible and ‘tangible’ symbols of past Armenian greatness and hence a source of pride.

Our focus was of course touring around world class vineyards and wine farms in and around Stellenbosch; however, we also covered some of best outdoor activities and cultural experiences such as going on a vineyard segway tour, wine safari, visiting a township and eating a local Xhosa meal. Today we’re showing you around one of the most picturesque corners in all of Austria: the Alpbachtal Valley located in Tyrol. This was our first time visiting Austria and I don’t think we could have chosen a better place to start. While we only had 3 days in this region, we managed to pack lots of time in the mountains, sample the local cuisine and befriend more than one cow along the way. The following is our mini-travel guide to Alpbachtal:
After getting settled into our farmhouse it was time for lunch and boy were we hungry. We drove to Brandenberg where we ate at Kaiserhaus, a restaurant and guesthouse tucked out in nature.
Tyrolean Food at Kaiserhaus Gasthof - Seeing as this was our first day in Tyrol, we wanted to sample some Tyrolean food including gamey meats and noodle dishes.
Hiking the Kaiserklamm - This was a really nice walk that followed the course of the river and took us over a series of bridges and tunnels. We sure enjoyed the scenery.
After that we returned back to our town of Reith im Alpbachtal, where we had some more hearty Tyrolean food and listened to a bit of live music.
On day 2, we lucked out with clear blue skies, so after having breakfast in our farmhouse, we drove to the town of Alpbach. Here we got quick e-biking lesson, and set off to tackle the Alps in style.
It wasn’t long before we left the town behind and found ourselves in the middle of nature. We rode up valleys, over streams, through forests, and tackled some pretty steep inclines along the way, but as you can see, the scenery was stunning.
We drove to the nearby village of Kramsach, where we stopped off for - you guessed it - more food! We were famished after all that biking, and we didn’t hold back. We plopped ourselves down at Rohrerhof, where we proceeded to order cappuccinos, massive dessert platters and schnapps. The next attraction: the Tyrolean Farmhouse Museum,
Gondola ride to Wiedersbergerhorn - After a leisurely walk and enjoying the impressive views, something else caught our attention - a mountaintop restaurant with an outdoor terrace!
Almatrieb Cows Come Home Parade - By noon, the festivities were in full swing. But it wasn’t all about cows. There were also craft demonstrations, food stalls, and lots of bands playing for jovial crowds who created their own dance floors.
That sums up our trip to the Alpbachtal Valley in Tyrol - cows, mountains and a whole bunch of delicious food. See you next time in Vienna (Wien).

10 Things to do in Poznań, Poland Travel Guide script:
Eager to explore Poznan, our first stop of the day was the Old Market Square, which is a sight to behold. As soon as we turned the street from our apartment, we were greeted with the Old Town Hall.
The top attraction here is a row of buildings known as the Merchant Houses. They stand shoulder to shoulder and are painted in different patterns, adding a bright splash of colour to the town.
The Royal Castle dates back to 1249, though if you think it looks rather new, that’s because it was mostly destroyed during WW2 and it had to be rebuilt. After paying for our tickets, we made a beeline straight for the tower, to enjoy some views of Poznan.
After visiting the castle, we did some wandering around the Old Town and ended up at the Former Jesuit College. This is where young people were educated in theology and philosophy.
Today the college houses the City Council, so we couldn’t really tour the place, but they do have a nice courtyard and a cafe for visitors.
Another thing to do in Poznan is visit Fara Poznanska, a beautiful Baroque church located right next to the Former Jesuit College. We arrived just as they were setting up for the weekly concert, so we sat down for a bit of music.
From there, we walked west of the Old Town, where things have more of a modern look. We saw the Fontana Wolnosh-chi Wolności, had a quick peek inside the Imperial Castle, and we also discovered that Polish people have a big love for ice cream.
We later googled Kolorowa and discovered that it’s the best ice cream shop in Poznan, so maybe we should’ve stood in line!
After visiting Cathedral Island, we went past Śródka, which is a really cool neighbourhood with lots of street art. We then had a little break by Lake Malta, which looked to be a popular weekend spot.
Another cool thing to do in Poznan is to visit KontenerArt, which is part urban beach, outdoor bar, art space, children’s playground, food cart central, and herb and spice garden. This was an unexpected find and it was really nice to see people of all ages enjoying this space.
On a rainy afternoon, we paid a quick visit to Poznan’s Archaeological Museum. Admittedly, it’s mostly geared towards children, but it was a fun way to stay dry.

Poznań alternate spellings (German: Posen - Russian: Познань)

Eager to explore Poznan, our first stop of the day was the Old Market Square, which is a sight to behold. As soon as we turned the street from our apartment, we were greeted with the Old Town Hall.
The top attraction here is a row of buildings known as the Merchant Houses. They stand shoulder to shoulder and are painted in different patterns, adding a bright splash of colour to the town.
The Royal Castle dates back to 1249, though if you think it looks rather new, that’s because it was mostly destroyed during WW2 and it had to be rebuilt. After paying for our tickets, we made a beeline straight for the tower, to enjoy some views of Poznan.
After visiting the castle, we did some wandering around the Old Town and ended up at the Former Jesuit College. This is where young people were educated in theology and philosophy.
Today the college houses the City Council, so we couldn’t really tour the place, but they do have a nice courtyard and a cafe for visitors.
Another thing to do in Poznan is visit Fara Poznanska, a beautiful Baroque church located right next to the Former Jesuit College. We arrived just as they were setting up for the weekly concert, so we sat down for a bit of music.
From there, we walked west of the Old Town, where things have more of a modern look. We saw the Fontana Wolnosh-chi Wolności, had a quick peek inside the Imperial Castle, and we also discovered that Polish people have a big love for ice cream.
We later googled Kolorowa and discovered that it’s the best ice cream shop in Poznan, so maybe we should’ve stood in line!
After visiting Cathedral Island, we went past Śródka, which is a really cool neighbourhood with lots of street art. We then had a little break by Lake Malta, which looked to be a popular weekend spot.
Another cool thing to do in Poznan is to visit KontenerArt, which is part urban beach, outdoor bar, art space, children’s playground, food cart central, and herb and spice garden. This was an unexpected find and it was really nice to see people of all ages enjoying this space.
On a rainy afternoon, we paid a quick visit to Poznan’s Archaeological Museum. Admittedly, it’s mostly geared towards children, but it was a fun way to stay dry.

On a personal level, Ukraine was the most pleasantly surprising country we visited this year on tour across Europe. Not knowing what to expect and not having much time to prepare we arrived in Ukraine with fresh eyes while hitting the ground running.
Overall we visited Kiev and Lviv and left wanting to explore more of Ukraine. How expensive is Ukraine? Our top 10 reasons to visit Ukraine covers accommodation, food, attractions and transportation along with a slew of other travel tips.
10 Reasons to Visit Ukraine Travel Tips
1) Ukraine is Affordable for travelers
-$15-35 per night for entire apartments using Airbnb
-Great value meals for about $5-10 per person for a full meal or less for a budget meal
-Metro tickets in Kiev only cost 5 HRV ($0.20)
-Groceries reasonably priced - we loved chocolate + wine
2) Ukraine is an Underrated Country to Visit
-We didn't encounter many other tourists - especially International visitors
-Attractions were not overrun and sometimes if we visited early enough on a weekday we had places to ourselves
-The only exception to that is churches because they're active places of worship
3) Safety
-News coverage would suggest Ukraine is unsafe but we found Kiev and Lviv to be very safe when we visited (along the border with Russia could be a different story)
-We walked around with our cameras without any issues
-No hassles while walking around
-I went jogging at night in Kyiv
-Locals are out enjoying life - playing chess in parks, eating in restaurants and using public spaces for concerts
4) Friendliness of locals in Ukraine
-Really good and friendly service at restaurants (some English spoken most of the time)
-Great AirBNB hosts who both went above and beyond to help us
-Even with language barrier smiles aplenty
-As a travel tip for Ukraine learn to read the Cyrillic alphabet
5) Traditional Ukrainian Food in Kiev and Lviv
-Good local food scene - for all price points
-Typically Ukrainian cuisine is hearty and filling
-Some of our favorite Ukrainian food includes the following:
a) varenyky (dumplings)
b) banosh (polenta, bacon and sheep's cheese)
c) deruny (potato pancakes with sauce)
d) borscht
6) Thriving International Food Scene
-Georgian cuisine
-Korean food
-Sushi
Italian style pizzas
-Pop up cafes and food trucks in parks and on street corners
7) Transportation
-awesome metro system in Kiev (grand stations and deep underground + affordable prices)
-deepest station in the world in Kyiv (5 minutes)
-great connections from airport to city center in Kyiv
-taking the train from Kiev to Lviv and it was efficient, on time and comfortable

-interesting mix of a bit of Soviet but mostly ornate European architecture
-some parts look like they could belong in Paris or Buenos Aires and other parts are distinctly soviet
-painted in cheerful colors

-Orthodox churches and monasteries in Kyiv - main attractions
-ornate and onion domes - impressive on inside and outside
-women need to cover up in Orthodox churches
-active places or prayer

-Kyiv is very different from Lviv (worth visiting both)

Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city-site situated in the Turkish province of Kars, near the border with Armenia.
Between 961 and 1045 it was the capital of the medieval (Bagratuni) Armenian Kingdom that covered much of present day Armenia and eastern Turkey. The city is located on a triangular site, visually dramatic and naturally defensive, protected on its eastern side by the ravine of the Akhurian River and on its western side by the Bostanlar or Tzaghkotzadzor valley. The Akhurian is a branch of the Araks River and forms part of the current border between Turkey and Armenia. Called the "City of 1001 Churches," Ani stood on various trade routes and its many religious buildings, palaces, and fortifications were amongst the most technically and artistically advanced structures in the world.
At its height, Ani had a population of 100,000--200,000 people and was the rival of Constantinople, Baghdad and Damascus. Long ago renowned for its splendor and magnificence, Ani was abandoned and largely forgotten following the earthquake of 1319.

Armenian chroniclers such as Yeghishe and Ghazar Parpetsi first mentioned Ani in the 5th century AD. They described it as a strong fortress built on a hilltop and a possession of the Armenian Kamsarakan dynasty. The city took its name from the Armenian fortress-city and pagan center of Ani-Kamakh located in the region of Daranaghi in Upper Armenia. Ani was also previously known as Khnamk (Խնամք), although historians are uncertain as to why it was called so. Johann Heinrich Hübschmann, a German philologist and linguist who studied the Armenian language, suggested that the word may have come from the Armenian word "khnamel" (խնամել), an infinitive which means "to take care of". Ani was also the diminutive name of ancient Armenian goddess Anahit who was seen as the mother-protector of Armenia
Cultural and economic center
Ani did not lie along any previously important trade routes, but because of its size, power, and wealth it became an important trading hub. Its primary trading partners were the Byzantine Empire, the Persian Empire, the Arabs, as well as smaller nations in southern Russia and Central Asia.
Sacking and desolation
Ani was attacked and sacked respectively by both Byzantine and Seljuk Turkish armies. For the former Byzantine attacks in 1044, Armenian historian Vardapet Aristakes wrote: "In these days Byzantine armies entered the land of Armenia four times in succession until they had rendered the whole country uninhabited through sword, fire, and captive taking.

We had the privilege of going to the southernmost point in Norway, and visited some of the quaint little towns along the sea coast, but the most spectacular experience this year, was the hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). FIRST STEPS IN ARMENIA: YEREVAN & GYUMRI
After 4 full weeks in Georgia, we decided that it was time to move on. So we chose Armenia to spend the next three weeks. Since the beginning of our trip, we’ve been traveling all around that country. In Ani, we even saw the border a few hundred meters from us. Now we could at least find out how Armenia looks like.
The arrival in Yerevan was rather surprising. The center is full of green parks, has some pedestrian street and plenty of fancy shops and cafes. Along all the Caucasian cities we visited so far, Yerevan is the one which reminds us the most of European capitals.
On our second day, we met Vako. He is a local who likes to share his knowledge of the city by offering free walking tours (highly recommended). During our five days in Yerevan, we stumbled on him twice. Yerevan is not so big after all. On those days we saw other faces of Yerevan, from the old soviet amusement park to the alternative Aeon’s cafe.
After Yerevan, we went on a tour in the country. In order to simplify the planning, we took the suggested itinerary from the Bradt guide and followed it by the letter. We rented a small Nissan Micra and started from there. The first stop (covered in this episode) was Gyumri. We spent the night in a very nice B&B; owned by Armine and her husband. It was such a treat for us: Coffee and Choux à la crème on our arrival, followed by a traditional homemade dinner with her husband and her. And, in the morning, we got again a table full of delicious food for the breakfast. At that point we realized that our decision to stay only in homestays or B&B; for the rest of our Armenian tour was a very good one. Although we may take some weight in the process…
WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY:
The free walking tour of Yerevan offered by Vako. A really nice introduction to the country and the city.
The children railways. A remain of the soviet time (1937) that was used to taught kids and teenagers how to operate trains.
Looking at hundreds of persons performing traditional Armenian dances at the cascade. They do that every last Friday of the month and everyone is welcome to participate.
The genocide memorial and museum. A must see if you want to understand Armenia.
ACCOMMODATION
Yerevan hostel. So far the cheapest place we stayed at (24 CHF a night)… and we got what we payed for: a tiny room without windows and a bulk bed. Magali was sleeping on the bed below. Her biggest fear was to have the upper bed falling on her when Daniel was moving. Please note here that this is because of the few old pieces of wood that were supporting the bed and not because of Daniel weight.
Armine B&B; in Gyumri. Such a lovely place, highly recommended!
RESTAURANTS
The Black Angus burger bar. Our favorite. But don’t tell that to Armenian people since they don’t serve Armenian food.
The Baguette french bakery. Taste very good. But don’t tell that to Armenian people since they don’t serve Armenian food.
Pizza Toria, an Italian place. The pizzas were almost as good as in Italy. But don’t tell that to Armenian people since they don’t serve Armenian food.
Armine B&B.; Armine prepared us a real Armenian supper. Now we can say that we like Armenian cuisine! (after 5 days in the country).

(Daniel only) Every Monday you can watch the latest episode of Game of Thrones at the Aeon’s anti cafe, a place full of board games, books and nice english speaking people.

On our very first trip to South Africa we spent one day in Stellenbosch where we did a wine tour and hit up a total of 5 wineries. It was an action packed day but we knew we had only seen a fraction of what this place has to offer and we were itching to return! Fast forward two years, and we found ourselves with an invitation to come and experience Stellenbosch, this time with a week to spare. Naturally we said yes! This being the winelands meant that our itinerary was wine heavy, but we also got to see sample the food, visit the markets, check out the nightlife and get close to nature. The following is our travel guide to Stellenbosch, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back, and join us on this ride!
In between all the feasting and vineyard hopping, we also found a bit of time to explore Stellenbosch itself. Stellenbosch is a charming town located in the Western Cape, and it’s the second oldest European settlement in the province after Cape Town. The streets are lined with oak trees, the buildings are all painted white, and you have a cool mix of Early Cape, Cape Dutch, and Victorian architecture.
And while Sam was off hiking, I did a biking tour of Stellenbosch with the Adventure Shop, where I learned a bit more about the town’s history, and got out in nature, before biking over to the Lanzerac Wine Estate where we met up with the group again. Here we had a light lunch featuring a spread of cheese, deli meats, fresh fruits, and of course, wine!
And just like that our week in Stellenbosch was over! I think it’s fair to say that we left a few pounds heavier, but with a newfound appreciation for South African wine and a taste of what the winelands have to offer. The streets are lined with oak trees, the buildings are all painted white, and you have a cool mix of Early Cape, Cape Dutch, and Victorian architecture.
And while Sam was off hiking, I did a biking tour of Stellenbosch with the Adventure Shop, where I learned a bit more about the town’s history, and got out in nature, before biking over to the Lanzerac Wine Estate where we met up with the group again. Here we had a light lunch featuring a spread of cheese, deli meats, fresh fruits, and of course, wine!
And just like that our week in Stellenbosch was over! I think it’s fair to say that we left a few pounds heavier, but with a newfound appreciation for South African wine and a taste of what the winelands have to offer. As always, we hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Stellenbosch. Seoul, South Korea, is truly an amazing city to visit! It's modern, easy to navigate and there's little something everyone will enjoy. The Seoul subway system makes it easy to get around town and discover exactly what the giant city has to offer.
Surrounded by Japan and China, Seoul and South Korea sometimes doesn't get all the attention is deserves . Korea is home to a unique culture, cuisine and a fascinating history. If you ever have the chance to visit Seoul, you'll have a great time!
I traveled to Seoul Korea and was able to do all kinds of things, but I've narrowed this list down to twenty five of the best things to do in Seoul - of course there are other things as well but this list is just the beginning and intended to get your ideas and travel imagination flowing!
