Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), known as Buddy Holly, was an American musician and singer/songwriter who was a central figure of mid-1950s rock and roll. Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas, to a musical family during the Great Depression; he learned to play guitar and to sing alongside his siblings. His style was influenced by gospel music, country music and rhythm and blues acts, and he performed in Lubbock with his friends from high school. He made his first appearance on local television in 1952, and the following year he formed the group "Buddy and Bob" with his friend Bob Montgomery. In 1955, after opening for Elvis Presley, Holly decided to pursue a career in music. He opened for Presley three times that year; his band's style shifted from country and western to entirely rock and roll. In October that year, when he opened for Bill Haley & His Comets, Holly was spotted by Nashville scout Eddie Crandall, who helped him get a contract with Decca Records.

Smokey Joe's Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, including rock and roll and rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Original Broadway cast recording, Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller, won a Grammy award in 1996.
After a Los Angeles tryout, the revue opened on Broadway in 1995, running for 2,036 performances, making it the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history. It also had a London run in 1996.
In revue format with no unifying theme, the 39 songs are presented by various members of the cast in various combinations, with no dialogue. There are novelty songs ("Charlie Brown"), romantic ballads ("Spanish Harlem"), and infectious melodies ("There Goes My Baby").
Music and lyrics for all songs are by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, unless otherwise noted. The song "Smokey Joe's Cafe" is not performed in the show, although a brief instrumental excerpt is used in Act II as transitional music.

Dean Martin - Raining In My Heart (1971) - Reprise Records. Born 6/7/1917, Steubenville, OH. Singer/actor. This is Dean's version of Buddy Holly's 1959 song (#88 in 1959, Coral Records).
The original recording of this was made in either late 1954 or early 1955 at Nesman Recording Studios in Wichita Falls, TX. Original musicians were Buddy Holly on duet vocal and electric guitar, Bob Montgomery on lead vocal and acoustic guitar, Sonny Curtis on fiddle, Larry Welborn on bass, and Don Guess on Steel Guitar. This original version was later overdubbed in 1963, by the Fireballs, I assume at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, NM. The musicians in the Fireballs were George Tomsco on Guitar, Stan Lark on Bass, Keith McCormack on rhythm guitar, Lyn Bailey also on bass, and Doug Roberts on drums. I have simply tried to combine both version for a stereo effect. Hope you enjoy!

Well, I found that you're a rover and it's made me blue like a talent scout you want a love that's new don't come back knockin' - at my heart's closed door or I won't be home - don't call and knock no more When you went away and left me all alone while you played around - I waited at home don't come back knockin' - at my heart's closed door or I won't be home - don't call and knock no more You had all my heart - was your very own you weren't satisfied - now I'll go on alone don't come back knockin' - at my heart's closed door or I won't be home - don't call and knock no more Well, pity those with hearts so empty and cold to never know true love - a treasure to hold don't come back knockin' - at my heart's closed door or I won't be home - don't call and knock no more

Buddy Holly & The Crickets playing Peggy Sue live
Buddy Holly and the Crickets made an appearance on the Arthur Murray Dance Party on December 29, 1957. It was unusual to see a band like the Crickets performing on the show. This video includes the complete introduction by Kathryn Murray. Another interesting note...this footage is used on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" compilations. Clark claims that the footage of the only appearance that Holly and the Crickets made on Bandstand in the fall of 1958 was destroyed in the 70s. They performed "Heartbeat". It's a shame that the footage was destroyed because it was Buddy's last appearance on TV before his death.

Met medewerking van Don McLean, Brian May, Robert Wyatt, Paul Anka, Hank Marvin, Don Everly e.a.

Well, I found you're a rover
And it's made me blue
Like a talent scout
You want some love that's new
Don't come back knockin'
At my heart's closed door
For I won't be home
Don't call an' knock no more
Well, when you went away
And left me all alone
While you played around
I waited at home
Don't come back knockin'
At my heart's closed door
For I won't be home
Don't call an' knock no more
You had all my heart
It was your very own
You weren't satisfied
Now, I'll go on alone
Don't come back knockin'
At my heart's closed door
For I won't be home
Don't call an' knock no more
Oh, let's really knock it this time boys
Well, pity those with hearts
So empty and cold
To never know true love
A treasure to hold
Don't come back knockin'
At my heart's closed door
For I won't be home
