Mongstad is an industrial site in Hordaland county, Norway. The site sits on the border of the municipalities of Lindås and Austrheim, with most of the site in Lindås. The site features an oil refinery for Statoil and other oil companies, including Shell. At Mongstad, Statoil has a crude oil terminal with a capacity of 9.5 million barrels (1,510,000 m3). The port at Mongstad is the largest in Norway, measured in tonnage. The refinery at Mongstad is modern, and has been extensively upgraded, with a capacity of 12 million tonnes of crude oil per year (230,000 barrels per day). The refinery is the largest in Norway, though medium-sized by European standards. It is owned by a company called Mongstad Refining, in which Statoil has whole ownership (since 2013). http://www.statoil.com/en/OurOperations/TerminalsRefining/ProdFacilitiesMongstad/Pages/FullOwnershipMongstad_nov2013.aspx
All the crude oil refined at Mongstad comes from the North Sea. The largest production is petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and light petroleum products. The heaviest components are used to make petrol coke, an important ingredient in anodes for aluminum production.
The Cool War is a science fiction novel by Frederik Pohl published in 1981 by Del Rey Books.
Like many of Pohl's novels, this opens in a world reduced by a crisis, in this case the loss of fossil fuels. Solar power is a major, albeit insufficient, source of power. Electricity is metered and cut off if a home exceeds a maximum amount of usage. "Power piggery", the profligate use of electricity, is a crime.
The Rev. H. Hornswell "Horny" Hake becomes embroiled in "the Cool War", in which each country tries to sabotage the economies of its rivals, even if politically they are allies. For instance, he is put in charge of a party of schoolchildren touring Europe. The children are, however, carrying a virulent flu-like disease that affects only adults aged between 30 and 50, the "prime of life" individuals who tend to run businesses and government in industrialized countries. As a result, industrial production in Europe falls drastically. The group who created the infection is known only as "The Team" and is composed of former agents of the CIA and other organizations.

CO2 Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM)
From Ågotnes to Mongstad with a trip to Radøy
The world's largest facility for testing and improving CO2 capture opened in May 2012. Knowledge gained will prepare the ground for CO2 capture initiatives to help combat climate change. TCM is a joint venture between the Norwegian state, Statoil, Shell and Sasol.
Aker Solutions has developed a technology that can capture CO2 from flue gas before it reaches the atmosphere. A large test plant is now up and running at CO2 Technology Centre Mongstad in Norway.
The last additions to Mongstad's skyline are two 30 metres tall desorber towers where CO2 and the amines (solvent used) will be separated after the capture process. The construction site at Mongstad is changing radically these days. So far it has predominately consisted of concrete foundations and large concrete structures and towers - among two absorber towers of 62 metres and 30 metres. These days the large pre-fabricated steel structures are being installed, and the area is taking the shape of an industrial plant. The construction of the Technology Centre Mongstad is now halfway complete, and it is on track to start operating by early 2012. TCM will test two different technologies, from Aker Clean Carbon and Alstom, respectively, for capture of CO2 from two flue gas source...

The CHP station will increase the energy effect at Mongstad to nearly 80%. It will result in the facility being self-sufficient with electricity. The Troll A and Gjøa platforms and the Kollsnes onshore complex will also get electricity from Mongstad. The goal of the test centre is to further develop and test various technologies relating to carbon capture from exhaust gases from the combined heat and power station, and from emission sources at the refinery. The test centre is scheduled to start up in 2011. Stage II comprises a full-scale facility that is capable of capturing carbon dioxide from both the combined heat and power station and other relevant emission sources at the refinery. See http://www.statoil.com for more information.
TCM - A world class industrial scale test centre for carbon capture TCM is already well known in the CCS industry. The Financial Times, after a recent visit, labelled TCM "the holy grail for advocates of carbon capture and storage". TCM enters the operational phase early 2012, with the objective to become a point of reference for the CCS industry. The facility has a capacity of 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, thus allowing for industrial-scale testing of various technologies.

ECU 911 is the name of Ecuador's new security system, which runs 15 high technology centers all around the country. The state invested US$270 million in creating the system, which coordinates the work of a number of bodies such as the military, national police, and the Red Cross. The system has significantly reduced the crime rate in the country. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/web/telesur/#!en/video/ecuador-ecu-911-ha-contribuido-a-disminuir-indices-de-delitos-en

But here's a random entry just to comment on what's going on right now. When I first arrived in Norway, everything was green and there was so much sunshine that I didn't hardly know what to do with myself. That first week of July I remember looking up at night and realizing it wasn't dark enough to see stars. Well, it's the end of October, and things have changed a bit. The brilliant colors of fall have come to Hamar and are on th...
