Hide (skin)

A hide or skin is an animal skin treated for human use. Common commercial hides include leather from cattle and other livestock animals, buckskin, alligator skin and snake skin. All are used for shoes, clothes and other fashion accessories. Leather is also used in upholstery, interior decorating, horse tack and harnesses. Such skins are sometimes still gathered from hunting and processed at a domestic or artisanal level but most leather making is now industrialized and large-scale. Various tannins are used for this purpose.

The term "hide" is sometimes expanded to include furs, which are harvested from various species, including cats, mustelids, and bears.

History

Archaeologists believe that animal hides provided an important source of clothing and shelter for all prehistoric humans and their use continued among non-agricultural societies into modern times. The Inuit, for example, used animal hides for summer tents, waterproof clothes, and kayaks. Various American Indian tribes used hides in the construction of tepees and wigwams, moccasins, and buckskins. They were sometimes used as window coverings. Until the invention of plastic drum heads in the 1950s, animal hides or metal was used.

Hide (Doctor Who)

"Hide" is the ninth episode of the seventh series of the British science-fiction drama Doctor Who, first broadcast on BBC One on 20 April 2013. It was written by Neil Cross and directed by Jamie Payne.

In the episode, alien time traveller the Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companion Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) visit a mansion in the 1970s owned by Professor Alec Palmer (Dougray Scott), which appears to be haunted. Palmer's assistant, Emma Grayling (Jessica Raine), is an empath who is able to connect to the ghost. The Doctor discovers that the ghost is really a time traveller from the future (Kemi-Bo Jacobs) who is trapped in a pocket universe, and he travels there to rescue her. There he discovers a bizarre "Crooked Man" (Aiden Cook), who also seeks to escape the pocket universe and be reunited with its mate in the mansion, who had been the source of much of the mysterious activity in the mansion.

"Hide" was the first contribution to Doctor Who of writer Neil Cross, who was a fan of the show but had never had the time to write an episode. Cross wanted to write a scary episode and was inspired by Nigel Kneale's works The Quatermass Experiment and The Stone Tape. The storyline of "Hide" was kept to a restricted setting and characters, although it was expanded thematically to flesh out the monster with a love story that paralleled that of Professor Palmer and Emma. The first to be filmed for the second half of the series — predating Coleman's introduction as full-time companion in the Christmas special — "Hide" began filming in late May 2012 at Margam Country Park, Gethin Forest, and a National Trust property at Tyntesfield. The episode was watched by 6.61 million viewers in the UK and received generally positive reviews from critics.

Blue Movie

Blue Movie (stylized as blue movie; aka Fuck) is a 1969 American film directed, produced, written and cinematographed by American producer Andy Warhol.Blue Movie, the first adult erotic film depicting explicit sex to receive wide theatrical release in the United States, is a seminal film in the Golden Age of Porn and helped inaugurate the "porno chic" phenomenon in modern American culture. Further, according to Warhol, Blue Movie was a major influence in the making of Last Tango in Paris, an internationally controversial erotic drama film, starring Marlon Brando, and released a few years after Blue Movie was made.Viva and Louis Waldon, playing themselves, starred in Blue Movie.

Plot

The film includes dialogue about the Vietnam War, various mundane tasks and, as well, unsimulated sex, during a blissful afternoon in a New York City apartment. The film was presented in the press as, "a film about the Vietnam War and what we can do about it." Warhol added, "the movie is about ... love, not destruction."

Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold Fuckel

Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold Fuckel (3 February 1821, in Reichelsheim – 8 May 1876) was a German botanist who worked largely on fungi.

From 1836 to 1852 he worked as an apothecary, afterwards deriving income from a vineyard he owned in Oestrich im Rheingau.

The species epithet in the binomen Botryotinia fuckeliana, a plant pathogen and the causal agent of gray mold disease, was named by mycologist Heinrich Anton de Bary in honor of him. Fuckel was the taxonomic authority of the mycological genera Aleuria, Phyllachora (Nitschke ex Fuckel), Plectania and Sclerotinia.

L-fuculokinase belongs to the family of transferases, specifically those transferring phosphorus-containing groups (phosphotransferases) with an alcohol group as acceptor. The systematic name of this enzyme class is ATP:L-fuculose 1-phosphotransferase. Other names in common use include L-fuculokinase (phosphorylating), and L-fuculose kinase. This enzyme participates in fructose and mannose metabolism.

Face (a cappella group)

Face are a Boulder, Colorado-based "all-vocal rock band," or a cappella group performing mostly rock music. National appearances and awards include one of the eight original groups on NBC's premiere season of "The Sing-Off" (2009), two-time Runner-Up and two-time National Audience Favorite at the National Finals of Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival (2005 and 2007), and Runner-Up for Favorite Pop/Rock Group from the Contemporary A Cappella Society's Community Awards (2007). Based in Boulder, Colorado, Face has also garnered numerous local awards including Best Local Band by The Denver Channel's A-List Awards (2013), Best Local Musician by Boulder Weekly's Best of Boulder Awards (2009) and third-place for Best Local Band by The Denver Channel's A-List Awards (2009).

History

The idea for Face grew out of a university a cappella experience. Both Ben Lunstad and Joseph DiMasi had formed and performed with undergraduate a cappella groups. They met in grad school in 2000 at the University of Colorado in Boulder while singing with CU's In The Buff. Deciding that In The Buff wasn't exactly what they were looking for, Ben and DiMasi co-founded the award-winning Extreme Measures.
