Professor Layton

Professor Layton (レイトン教授, Reiton-kyōju) is a puzzle adventure game series for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS developed by Level-5. The series consists of six games plus a film. A crossover game titled Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney has also been released for the Nintendo 3DS.

The first three games follow Professor Hershel Layton and Luke Triton's adventures together. The subsequent three games and the film are prequels, and focus on how Luke and Layton met, and their "original" adventures.

Each title is based in a series of puzzles and mysteries given by the citizens of towns that the main characters visit. It is not necessary to solve all the puzzles to progress, but some are mandatory, and at certain points in the game a minimum number of puzzles must be solved before the story can continue.

The series has gone on to be one of the most successful Nintendo DS exclusive series, with the lifetime cumulative sales of Professor Layton games standing at 10 million units sold as of October 2010. As of April 2015, the series has sold over 15.5 million copies.

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (レイトン教授と永遠の歌姫, Reiton-kyōju to Eien no Utahime), also known as Professor Layton: The First Movie (レイトン教授 ザ・ファースト・ムービー, Reiton-kyōju Za Fāsuto Mūbī), is a 2009 anime mystery comedy-drama film directed by Masakazu Hashimoto and produced by P.A.Works and OLM. The film is based on the Professor Layton video game series by Level-5, taking place between the events of the video games Professor Layton and the Last Specter and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.

According to Level-5, the film stays true to the games, with music, puzzles and characters. An English-language version was released by Manga Entertainment in the United Kingdom on October 18, 2010 at the same time Professor Layton and the Unwound Future was. The film was released in the United States on November 8, 2011 by Viz Media.

Plot

Not long after the events of Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, archaeologist and puzzle master Professor Layton and his young apprentice Luke Triton reminisce over one of their earliest adventures together from three years ago: Layton is invited by his former student Janice Quatlane to watch her perform in an opera at the Crown Petone opera house, which is built on the White Cliffs of Dover. The performance centers on the legendary lost land of Ambrosia and the secret of eternal life it holds, which will be rediscovered when its queen returns. Janice believes recent strange occurrences are somehow connected to the opera: girls have disappeared from London and the opera's composer, Oswald Whistler, has recently adopted a young girl who has claimed to be his deceased daughter Melina. Whistler plays the entire opera on the Detragon, an elaborate one-man orchestra machine. Once the performance is complete, a mystery man informs the audience that they are to play a game, the winner of which will receive the secret of eternal life.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter

Professor Layton and the Last Specter, known in Japan as Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute (レイトン教授と魔神の笛, Reiton-kyōju to Majin no Fue) and in Europe as Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call, is a puzzle adventure video game produced by Level-5 for the Nintendo DS handheld game console. Last Specter is the fourth game in the Professor Layton series, and is a prequel that takes place three years before the first trilogy, detailing how Professor Layton met his apprentice, Luke Triton and introducing Layton's assistant Emmy Altava.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter also includes an additional role-playing game entitled Professor Layton's London Life, available from the start of the game. London Life, in which players interact with various characters from the series in a town called "Little London", was advertised as having over 100 hours of content. London Life was removed from the European versions of the game because the translation of texts would have significantly delayed the game's release.

Main Theme

"Main Theme" is an instrumental track by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd on their third album, More. The track is played at the beginning of the film, when Stefan is waiting for someone to pick him up along a road to Paris.

Structure

The track begins with a panning gong that lasts as a drone sound for the whole piece; at 0:30 the Farfisa organ starts a progression of modal chords, that fades at 1:12 into a drum-bass iterative sequence, similar to, but slower than, the one featured at the opening of "Let There Be More Light". The organ played through a wah-wah pedal (1:20) plays a progression of background notes over the drum-bass line, while the untreated organ plays the main melodic notes (2:10). The slide guitar plays from the middle of the piece onward. The CD writing credit omits Mason.

The song has been covered in 1977 by French group Rosebud with an electro-funky style. It is available on their Discoballs album among other Pink Floyd covers.
