The Charlotte Observer is a newspaper serving Charlotte, North Carolina and its metro area. It has the largest circulation in North Carolina and South Carolina. It is owned by The McClatchy Company.
The Observer primarily serves Charlotte and Mecklenburg County and the surrounding counties of Iredell, Cabarrus, Union, Lancaster, York, Gaston, Catawba, and Lincoln. It publishes local sections for each of these outlying counties and for specific neighborhoods within Mecklenburg. The newspaper's circulation covers over 40 counties in North and South Carolina. Home delivery service in outlying counties has declined in recent years, with delivery times growing later as the paper has outsourced circulation services outside the primary Charlotte area.
Circulation at The Charlotte Observer has been declining for many years. The most recent period (May 2011) showed that Charlotte Observer circulation totaled 155,497 daily and 212,318 Sunday.
In addition to its main bureau in Charlotte, the paper operates six regional bureaus in Hickory, Gastonia, Concord, Monroe, and Cornelius, and Fort Mill, South Carolina. It has offices in the state capitals of North and South Carolina: Raleigh and Columbia, respectively. The Observer also has an office in Washington, D.C.
The Observer Building is a historic commercial and residential building at 128 Union Square in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Built in 1854, it is an architecturally unusual Greek Revival wood-frame "flatiron" triangular building with a variable-pitch gable roof. In addition to its architectural significance, it is also historically significant as the home for many years of The Piscataquis Observer, one of Maine's oldest weekly newspapers. The building is now owned by the Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society, which uses it as a museum and storage space. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
The Observer Building stands at a prominent triangular intersection in the center of Dover-Foxcroft, where Pleasant Street diverges from East Main Street (Maine State Route 15). The building itself is a roughly triangular two-story wood frame structure, presenting a narrow three-bay front to the junction. Its roof is one of its most unusual features, beginning at the front with a neary equilateral triangular gable pitch, which flattens out toward the rear of the building, giving an effect similar to an inverted ship's hull. The front facade has a doorway flanked by sash windows on the first floor, and a pair of symmetrically-placed windows on the second, and a smaller sash window in the gable. The doorway, like others on the building, is sheltered by a gable-roof portico supported by simple wooden brackets. The corners of the front facade are highlighted by wooden pilasters. The long south side of the building has nine windows on the first floor and eight on the second, while the north side has eight windows and two doorways on the first floor and eight windows on the second.
Cameron Jerrell Newton (born May 11, 1989) is an American football quarterback for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Auburn and was drafted as the first overall pick by the Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft. Newton is the only player in the modern era to be awarded the Heisman Trophy, win a national championship, and become the first overall pick in an NFL draft within a one-year span. He was the 2011 NFL Rookie of the Year, is a 3-time Pro Bowler, and was named to the NFL All Pro First Team in 2015.
In his rookie year, Newton broke numerous rookie and all-time NFL records for passing and rushing yards. He became the first NFL quarterback to throw for 400 yards in his first game, shattering Peyton Manning's first-game record by 120 yards. He also broke Otto Graham's 61-year-old record for passing yards by any quarterback in an NFL debut. Newton would go on to become the first rookie quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a season, as well as the first rookie quarterback to rush for 700 yards. He also ran for 14 touchdowns, more in a single season than any quarterback in NFL history, breaking Steve Grogan's 35-year-old record.
