He started his career in the youth system at Barcelona before moving to Sampdoria. During the 2014–15 season, he was the joint winner of the Capocannoniere title, awarded to the top scorer in Serie A. Formerly an under-20 international, Icardi made his senior debut for Argentina in 2013. Icardi ended the pre-season phrase as the club top goalscorer with three goals... Icardi was presented in team's opening match of 2014–15 Serie A, playing full-90 minutes during the 0–0 disappointing draw against Torino... On 9 November, Icardi scored a twice after two assists of Palacio during the 2–2 home draw against Hellas Verona... On 6 January of the following year, in the first match of the second part of the season, Icardi netted the only goal of his team during the 1–1 draw against Juventus at Juventus Stadium... In March, Inter faced VfL Wolfsburg in the Europa League quarter-finals, where Inter lose both matches with the aggregate 5–2. Icardi ended his European campaign with ten matches and four goals. On 11 April, he scored the first goal during the 0–3 away win against Hellas Verona, helping Inter to get their first win after six consecutive matches. He scored twice on the final day in a 4–3 win over Empoli and finished the season as the Serie A top goalscorer with 22 goals, joint with Hellas Verona's Luca Toni. Although Inter failed to qualify for European competition for the first time since 1999, Icardi's form attracted attention from abroad, however he signed a new four-year contract at the season's end. Before the start of 2015–16 season, it was announced that Icardi would be the new captain of Inter, replacing Andrea Ranocchia who lost his status after a poor 2014–15 season. His debut as a captain resulted a bad one, as he was taken off after only 15 minutes during the league win against Atalanta; Icardi was substituted by the debutant Jovetić, who scored the winning goal in the 93th minute. After the examinations, it was announced that Icardi suffered a thigh injury and he missed following league match against the newcomers of Carpi. Nicknamed El Niño del partido, and O cañito, Icardi is a quick, tactically intelligent, and physically strong striker, with good technique, and an eye for goal. In 2013, Don Balón listed him as one of the top 100 young players born after 1992.
