Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943) was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer, whose innovations to the Harlem stride style laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano, and whose best-known compositions, "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose", were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1984 and 1999.
Thomas Wright Waller was the youngest of 11 children (five survived childhood) born to Adeline Locket Waller and Reverend Edward Martin Waller in New York City. He started playing the piano when he was six and graduated to the organ of his father's church four years later. His mother instructed him as a youth. At the age of 14 he was playing the organ at Harlem's Lincoln Theater and within 12 months he had composed his first rag. Waller's first piano solos ("Muscle Shoals Blues" and "Birmingham Blues") were recorded in October 1922 when he was 18 years old.
He was the prize pupil, and later friend and colleague, of stride pianist James P. Johnson.

“African Ripples” was composed and recorded by Fats Waller in 1934. It contains the main theme from his earlier composition (recorded in 1929) “Gladyse,” though its secondary theme suggests a Bix Beiderbecke-like atmosphere in place of the one used in “Gladyse.” Waller also recorded “African Ripples” for Associated Transcriptions, with this version eventually being issued on various LPs and CDs. In spite of the many fine stride pianists who have emerged in the decades after Waller’s death in 1943, only a few have recorded this piece, including Dick Hyman, Ralph Sutton, Dill Jones, Judy Carmichael and Hilton Ruiz (the latter not especially known as a stride player, though he studied with Mary Lou Williams). Lorraine Feather put witty lyrics to “African Ripples” for her CD New York City Drag...

RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH MR FATS WALLER !!! Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller (May 21, 1904 -- December 15, 1943) was an influential jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer, whose innovations to the Harlem stride style laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano, and whose best-known compositions, "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose", were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame posthumously, in 1984 and 1999.

George Melly's interview with Slim Gaillard. Jazz Juke Box - Arena - 1983 George Melly presents a number of short films made in the 1940's of some of the greatest and most popular jazz artists of the era, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, Mead Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, and Pete Johnson. Some of the footage originates from "soundies" films made for visual jukeboxes and the precursors of the pop promotional video.
"Ain't Misbehavin'" is a 1929 song written by Fats Waller, Harry Brooks (music) and Andy Razaf (lyrics). Waller recorded the original version that year for Victor Records and also later performed the song in the 1943 film Stormy Weather. In a 1941 interview with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Fats claimed the song was written while "lodging" in alimony prison, and that is why he was not "misbehaving". There were six other recordings of the song released in 1929, including versions by Louis Armstrong, Ruth Etting, Gene Austin, and Leo Reisman and His Orchestra. It was also used in the off-Broadway musical Connie's Hot Chocolates.[citation needed] It has been recorded by many other performers over the years, including Anita O'Day, Sarah Vaughan (for "Sarah Vaughan in Hi-Fi"; 1950), Billie Hol...
Chick Corea hosts the Art Tatum trio clip of their warm up piece called tiny's exercise. FACT#1: Art Tatum was completely blind in his left eye and had severe cataracts (blurred/cloudy vision) in his right eye. FACT#2: When Tatum walked into a club where Fats Waller was playing, Waller stepped away from the piano bench to make way for Tatum, announcing, "I only play the piano, but tonight God is in the house". FACT#3: After hearing Art Tatum play, Oscar Peterson was so intimidated by what he heard that he did not touch the piano for over a week. FACT#4: Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, after hearing Tatum play, claimed he was the greatest piano player in any style. (more)

Well look who's here
Lulu's back in town
My, my, my, yes, yes, yes
Gotta get my old tuxedo pressed
Gotta sew a button on my vest
'Cause tonight I've gotta look my best
Lulu's back in town
Gotta get a half a buck somewhere
Gotta shine my shoes and slick my hair
Gotta get myself a boutonniere
Lulu's back in town
You can tell all my pets
All my Harlem coquettes
Mister Otis regrets
That he won't be aroun'
You can tell the mailman not to call
I ain't comin' home until the fall
And again I might not get back home at all
Lulu's back in town, yeah
Oh tell all my pets
All my Harlem coquettes
Mister Waller regrets
[Incomprehensible], no
Tell the mailman not to call
Ain't comin' home until the fall
And then again I might not get home at all
Lulu's back in town
Oh that woman's back at town
