Douglas Adams was the best-selling British author and satirist who created The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In this talk at UCSB recorded shortly before his death, Adams shares hilarious accounts of some of the apparently absurd lifestyles of the world's creatures, and gleans from them extraordinary perceptions about the future of humanity. If Hitchhiker is a must-see for the dedicated fan, so much more so is a new film biography of Douglas Adams entitled Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams. While a shorter bio and tribute appear on the second DVD of the Hitchhiker release, this is a full length look at the life and work of Douglas Adams.
This film, by Joel Greengrass and Rick Mueller, explores the details of Adams' life in a warm, funny, loving way. Life is sentimental but never mushy and, while an obvious tribute to the man, it never becomes one of those insipid eulogies that seem to sprout overnight like fungi whenever a celebrity passes on. This is a realistic look at a real live human being from the points of view of those who knew him best. Interviews with Adams' early teachers and comedy partners and friends, including Mary Allen, Terry Jones, and Berkeley Breathed and sister Jane Garnier, are interspersed with previously filmed interviews with Douglas Adams himself, as well as film clips of Adams giving lectures... and even video of Adams on vacation. Wonderful pop-up style factoids appear onscreen at opportune moments, and a Babelfish translates British English (batting=driving about aimlessly) for clueless Americans.
Readers of The Salmon of Doubt will find much of this film familiar. Many of the incidents recounted here are mentioned in Adams' own writing, compiled posthumously in Salmon. We see film footage of Adams, a passionate defender of endangered species, hiking in Africa wearing a rhinoceros suit. Mark Carwardine, Adams' collaborator on Last Chance to See, speaks of their travels. Adams himself speaks about his fascination with animals and nature. We learn where "42" came from, and when Adams first discovered the importance of having a towel on hand at all times.
As I mentioned, this is a film about a real human being, foibles and all. Mary Allen remembers Adams "exuberant, overenthusiastic" reaction to his early success...enthusiasm which led to him crashing his first Porsche! An extended section of the film discusses his insecurities, an issue that was probably at the heart of his legendary inability to meet deadlines (though Adams claimed he simply "loved the whooshing sound they made as they went by").
But this is also a film about a loving, caring, truly good man. The Douglas Adams pictured here was funny, witty, brilliant, and above all, kind. Friend Kanwal Sharma recounts how he seemed to always find himself upgraded to first class when he traveled; only later did he discover that Douglas was arranging the upgrades behind the scenes. Perhaps the most telling feature of this film is the warmth and joy that radiates from each speaker as they remember Adams. Though his work was incomparable, this film makes it clear that his legacy was something far more important.
I should mention especially that Neil Gaiman is a fantastic choice as narrator of Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams . The best documentaries are often ruined by dry, dull narration but there is no hint of that here. Gaiman is as warm and funny as the subject of the movie is and his voice draws the viewer instantly into the film. I was captivated from the very beginning.
Fans of Douglas Adams will want to watch this film again and again. Even better, those not familiar with Douglas Adams will learn a thing or two about being an all around decent human being, and ultimately they'll want to watch this film again and again, too. I smiled and laughed all the way through this movie, even through occasional tears. See this film when you need a good laugh, and a good cry.

Say what you will about the Star Wars prequels, but most agree that composer John Williams’ score dazzles, regardless of the episode. You don't have to be as wise as Master Yoda to see the clever callbacks between the original and prequel scores, but you'll probably be surprised to discover just how intricately Williams used music to tie all the films together.
In this video, music journalist Doug Adams breaks down -- note by note -- how Williams constructed the prequels' scores so that they pay tribute to the original films. This two-minute clip, produced by the independent film studio Ministry of Cinema, is taken from the group’s 2016 documentary The Prequels Strike Back. In it, Adams highlights connections between the scores of the original and prequel films, giving you another reason to appreciate Williams. As if you needed one.

Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Doug Adams , an internationally recognized expert in structural health monitoring and the new chair of Vanderbilt's civil and environmental engineering department (www.cee.vanderbilt.edu), studies the science of risk. He came to Vanderbilt in July from Purdue University, joining some of engineering's top experts in aspects of risk to the built and natural environment. His new lab is called LASIR — Laboratory for Systems Integrity and Reliability.
Vanderbilt offers a one-of-a-kind multidisciplinary option in reliability and risk engineering and management as part of its civil engineering doctoral program. Adams says he considers this the best group in the world studying risk.
Vanderbilt engineers conduct pioneering work on the risks of failure in materials and civil infrastructure such as nuclear power plants, transportation systems and cyber-physical systems, as well as in the environmental risks of energy production and extreme weather events, using multidisciplinary and multiscale modeling approaches.
Adams believes their strengths and his are complementary. He conducts full-scale dynamic experiments to discover which sensors and signatures are first to warn of impending failure in a variety of structures in the built environment, specifically aircraft, automobiles, military platforms and power machinery.
The value of his work can be seen in a variety of areas, but none more critical perhaps than in national security. Military experts estimate that it takes billions of dollars to repair and replace Hummer on electrohydraulic test rigHumvees, tanks and helicopters after service in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. When aging but vital equipment can be evaluated and proactively maintained, it saves cost—and lives.
Because Adams' work requires full-size structures, vehicles and equipment, his lab will soon be home to a 550-square-foot wind turbine test chamber, a military helicopter and a Hummer. Currently under construction, the 20,000-square-foot lab will hold more than $8 million in equipment, including electrohydraulic vehicle simulators, wind turbine dynamic test rigs, a 3-D laser velocimeter and systems for digital and infrared imaging that will allow Adams and his fellow researchers to assess how structural elements behave under real-world conditions. The high-bay facility will measure 27-feet from floor to ceiling and also include one-of-a-kind test beds for multimodal sensing of materials and machines.
Adams says that Vanderbilt is the only university he knows of that will employ a one-megahertz 3-D scanning laser velocimeter. The velocimeter will allow the researchers to scan a 140-foot-long aircraft in minutes and find defects in the material that are less than 1-inch in diameter—even when those defects are deep beneath the surface. He'll also use it to search for defects in the material of a wind turbine blade as it oscillates up to 1 million times each second.
Adams' research is supported by the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, and he partners with several large defense contractors and equipment manufacturers throughout the country.

Douglas Adams
Douglas Noel Adams (11 March 1952 – 11 May 2001) was an English writer, humorist, and dramatist.
Adams is best known as the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which originated in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy before developing into a "trilogy" of five books [sic] that sold more than 15 million copies in his lifetime and generated a television series, several stage plays, comics, a computer game, and in 2005 a feature film. Adams's contribution to UK radio is commemorated in The Radio Academy's Hall of Fame.
Adams also wrote Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988), and co-wrote The Meaning of Liff (1983), The Deeper Meaning of Liff (1990), Last Chance to See (1990), and three stories for the television series Doctor Who; he also served as script editor for the show's seventeenth season in 1979. A posthumous collection of his work, including an unfinished novel, was published as The Salmon of Doubt in 2002.
Adams was known as an advocate for environmentalism and conservation, as a lover of fast cars, cameras, technological innovation and the Apple Macintosh, and as a staunch atheist.

Star Wars
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise, centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away".
The first film in the series, Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope), was released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. If Hitchhiker is a must-see for the dedicated fan, so much more so is a new film biography of Douglas Adams entitled Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams. While a shorter bio and tribute appear on the second DVD of the Hitchhiker release, this is a full length look at the life and work of Douglas Adams. This film, by Joel Greengrass and Rick Mueller, explores the details of Adams' life in a warm, funny, loving way. Life is sentimental but never mushy and, while an obvious tribute to the man, it never becomes one of those insipid eulogies that seem to sprout overnight like fungi whenever a celebrity passes on. If Hitchhiker is a must-see for the dedicated fan, so much more so is a new film biography of Douglas Adams entitled Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams. While a shorter bio and tribute appear on the second DVD of the Hitchhiker release, this is a full length look at the life and work of Douglas Adams.
This film, by Joel Greengrass and Rick Mueller, explores the details of Adams' life in a warm, funny, loving way. Life is sentimental but never mushy and, while an obvious tribute to the man, it never becomes one of those insipid eulogies that seem to sprout overnight like fungi whenever a celebrity passes on. This is a realistic look at a real live human being from the points of view of those who knew him best. Wonderful pop-up style factoids appear onscreen at opportune moments, and a Babelfish translates British English (batting=driving about aimlessly) for clueless Americans.
Readers of The Salmon of Doubt will find much of this film familiar. Many of the incidents recounted here are mentioned in Adams' own writing, compiled posthumously in Salmon. We see film footage of Adams, a passionate defender of endangered species, hiking in Africa wearing a rhinoceros suit. Mark Carwardine, Adams' collaborator on Last Chance to See, speaks of their travels. Adams himself speaks about his fascination with animals and nature. We learn where "42" came from, and when Adams first discovered the importance of having a towel on hand at all times.
As I mentioned, this is a film about a real human being, foibles and all. Mary Allen remembers Adams "exuberant, overenthusiastic" reaction to his early success...enthusiasm which led to him crashing his first Porsche! An extended section of the film discusses his insecurities, an issue that was probably at the heart of his legendary inability to meet deadlines (though Adams claimed he simply "loved the whooshing sound they made as they went by").
But this is also a film about a loving, caring, truly good man. The Douglas Adams pictured here was funny, witty, brilliant, and above all, kind. Friend Kanwal Sharma recounts how he seemed to always find himself upgraded to first class when he traveled; only later did he discover that Douglas was arranging the upgrades behind the scenes. Perhaps the most telling feature of this film is the warmth and joy that radiates from each speaker as they remember Adams. Though his work was incomparable, this film makes it clear that his legacy was something far more important.
I should mention especially that Neil Gaiman is a fantastic choice as narrator of Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams . The best documentaries are often ruined by dry, dull narration but there is no hint of that here. Gaiman is as warm and funny as the subject of the movie is and his voice draws the viewer instantly into the film. I was captivated from the very beginning.
Fans of Douglas Adams will want to watch this film again and again. Even better, those not familiar with Douglas Adams will learn a thing or two about being an all around decent human being, and ultimately they'll want to watch this film again and again, too. I smiled and laughed all the way through this movie, even through occasional tears. See this film when you need a good laugh, and a good cry.

Vanderbilt engineers conduct pioneering work on the risks of failure in materials and civil infrastructure such as nuclear power plants, transportation systems and cyber-physical systems, as well as in the environmental risks of energy production and extreme weather events, using multidisciplinary and multiscale modeling approaches.
Adams believes their strengths and his are complementary. He conducts full-scale dynamic experiments to discover which sensors and signatures are first to warn of impending failure in a variety of structures in the built environment, specifically aircraft, automobiles, military platforms and power machinery.
The value of his work can be seen in a variety of areas, but none more critical perhaps than in national security. Military experts estimate that it takes billions of dollars to repair and replace Hummer on electrohydraulic test rigHumvees, tanks and helicopters after service in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. When aging but vital equipment can be evaluated and proactively maintained, it saves cost—and lives.
Because Adams' work requires full-size structures, vehicles and equipment, his lab will soon be home to a 550-square-foot wind turbine test chamber, a military helicopter and a Hummer. Currently under construction, the 20,000-square-foot lab will hold more than $8 million in equipment, including electrohydraulic vehicle simulators, wind turbine dynamic test rigs, a 3-D laser velocimeter and systems for digital and infrared imaging that will allow Adams and his fellow researchers to assess how structural elements behave under real-world conditions. The high-bay facility will measure 27-feet from floor to ceiling and also include one-of-a-kind test beds for multimodal sensing of materials and machines.
Adams says that Vanderbilt is the only university he knows of that will employ a one-megahertz 3-D scanning laser velocimeter. The velocimeter will allow the researchers to scan a 140-foot-long aircraft in minutes and find defects in the material that are less than 1-inch in diameter—even when those defects are deep beneath the surface. He'll also use it to search for defects in the material of a wind turbine blade as it oscillates up to 1 million times each second.
Adams' research is supported by the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, and he partners with several large defense contractors and equipment manufacturers throughout the country.

Currently under construction, the 20,000-square-foot lab will hold more than $8 million in equipment, including electrohydraulic vehicle simulators, wind turbine dynamic test rigs, a 3-D laser velocimeter and systems for digital and infrared imaging that will allow Adams and his fellow researchers to assess how structural elements behave under real-world conditions. The high-bay facility will measure 27-feet from floor to ceiling and also include one-of-a-kind test beds for multimodal sensing of materials and machines.
Adams says that Vanderbilt is the only university he knows of that will employ a one-megahertz 3-D scanning laser velocimeter. The velocimeter will allow the researchers to scan a 140-foot-long aircraft in minutes and find defects in the material that are less than 1-inch in diameter—even when those defects are deep beneath the surface. He'll also use it to search for defects in the material of a wind turbine blade as it oscillates up to 1 million times each second.
Adams' research is supported by the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, and he partners with several large defense contractors and equipment manufacturers throughout the country.

Wonderful pop-up style factoids appear onscreen at opportune moments, and a Babelfish translates British English (batting=driving about aimlessly) for clueless Americans.
Readers of The Salmon of Doubt will find much of this film familiar. Many of the incidents recounted here are mentioned in Adams' own writing, compiled posthumously in Salmon. We see film footage of Adams, a passionate defender of endangered species, hiking in Africa wearing a rhinoceros suit. Mark Carwardine, Adams' collaborator on Last Chance to See, speaks of their travels. Adams himself speaks about his fascination with animals and nature. We learn where "42" came from, and when Adams first discovered the importance of having a towel on hand at all times.
As I mentioned, this is a film about a real human being, foibles and all. Mary Allen remembers Adams "exuberant, overenthusiastic" reaction to his early success...enthusiasm which led to him crashing his first Porsche! An extended section of the film discusses his insecurities, an issue that was probably at the heart of his legendary inability to meet deadlines (though Adams claimed he simply "loved the whooshing sound they made as they went by").
But this is also a film about a loving, caring, truly good man. The Douglas Adams pictured here was funny, witty, brilliant, and above all, kind. Friend Kanwal Sharma recounts how he seemed to always find himself upgraded to first class when he traveled; only later did he discover that Douglas was arranging the upgrades behind the scenes. Perhaps the most telling feature of this film is the warmth and joy that radiates from each speaker as they remember Adams. Though his work was incomparable, this film makes it clear that his legacy was something far more important.
I should mention especially that Neil Gaiman is a fantastic choice as narrator of Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams . The best documentaries are often ruined by dry, dull narration but there is no hint of that here. Gaiman is as warm and funny as the subject of the movie is and his voice draws the viewer instantly into the film. I was captivated from the very beginning.
Fans of Douglas Adams will want to watch this film again and again. Even better, those not familiar with Douglas Adams will learn a thing or two about being an all around decent human being, and ultimately they'll want to watch this film again and again, too. I smiled and laughed all the way through this movie, even through occasional tears. See this film when you need a good laugh, and a good cry.

Vanderbilt offers a one-of-a-kind multidisciplinary option in reliability and risk engineering and management as part of its civil engineering doctoral program. Adams says he considers this the best group in the world studying risk.
Vanderbilt engineers conduct pioneering work on the risks of failure in materials and civil infrastructure such as nuclear power plants, transportation systems and cyber-physical systems, as well as in the environmental risks of energy production and extreme weather events, using multidisciplinary and multiscale modeling approaches.
Adams believes their strengths and his are complementary. He conducts full-scale dynamic experiments to discover which sensors and signatures are first to warn of impending failure in a variety of structures in the built environment, specifically aircraft, automobiles, military platforms and power machinery.
The value of his work can be seen in a variety of areas, but none more critical perhaps than in national security. Military experts estimate that it takes billions of dollars to repair and replace Hummer on electrohydraulic test rigHumvees, tanks and helicopters after service in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. When aging but vital equipment can be evaluated and proactively maintained, it saves cost—and lives.

He came to Vanderbilt in July from Purdue University, joining some of engineering's top experts in aspects of risk to the built and natural environment. His new lab is called LASIR — Laboratory for Systems Integrity and Reliability.
Vanderbilt offers a one-of-a-kind multidisciplinary option in reliability and risk engineering and management as part of its civil engineering doctoral program. Adams says he considers this the best group in the world studying risk.
Vanderbilt engineers conduct pioneering work on the risks of failure in materials and civil infrastructure such as nuclear power plants, transportation systems and cyber-physical systems, as well as in the environmental risks of energy production and extreme weather events, using multidisciplinary and multiscale modeling approaches.
Adams believes their strengths and his are complementary. He conducts full-scale dynamic experiments to discover which sensors and signatures are first to warn of impending failure in a variety of structures in the built environment, specifically aircraft, automobiles, military platforms and power machinery.
The value of his work can be seen in a variety of areas, but none more critical perhaps than in national security. Military experts estimate that it takes billions of dollars to repair and replace Hummer on electrohydraulic test rigHumvees, tanks and helicopters after service in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. When aging but vital equipment can be evaluated and proactively maintained, it saves cost—and lives.
Because Adams' work requires full-size structures, vehicles and equipment, his lab will soon be home to a 550-square-foot wind turbine test chamber, a military helicopter and a Hummer. Currently under construction, the 20,000-square-foot lab will hold more than $8 million in equipment, including electrohydraulic vehicle simulators, wind turbine dynamic test rigs, a 3-D laser velocimeter and systems for digital and infrared imaging that will allow Adams and his fellow researchers to assess how structural elements behave under real-world conditions. The high-bay facility will measure 27-feet from floor to ceiling and also include one-of-a-kind test beds for multimodal sensing of materials and machines.
Adams says that Vanderbilt is the only university he knows of that will employ a one-megahertz 3-D scanning laser velocimeter. The velocimeter will allow the researchers to scan a 140-foot-long aircraft in minutes and find defects in the material that are less than 1-inch in diameter—even when those defects are deep beneath the surface. He'll also use it to search for defects in the material of a wind turbine blade as it oscillates up to 1 million times each second.
Adams' research is supported by the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, and he partners with several large defense contractors and equipment manufacturers throughout the country.
