Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was the seventh President of the United States (1829–37). He was born near the end of the colonial era, somewhere near the then-unmarked border between North and South Carolina, into a recently immigrated Scots-Irish farming family of relatively modest means. During the American Revolutionary War Jackson, whose family supported the revolutionary cause, acted as a courier. He was captured, at age 13, and mistreated by his British captors. He later became a lawyer. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and then to the U.S. Senate. In 1801, Jackson was appointed colonel in the Tennessee militia, which became his political as well as military base. Jackson owned hundreds of slaves who worked on the Hermitage plantation which he acquired in 1804. He killed a man in a duel in 1806, over a matter of honor regarding his wife Rachel. Jackson gained national fame through his role in the War of 1812, most famously where he won a decisive victory over the main British invasion army at the Battle of New Orleans. In response to conflict with the Seminole in Spanish Florida, Jackson invaded the territory in 1818. This led directly to the Adams–Onís Treaty, which formally transferred Florida from Spain to the United States.
Gore Vidal (/ˌɡɔːr vᵻˈdɑːl/; born Eugene Louis Vidal; 3 October 1925 – 31 July 2012) was an American writer (of novels, essays, screenplays, and stage plays) and a public intellectual known for his patrician manner, epigrammatic wit, and polished style of writing.
As Eugene Louis Vidal, he was born to a political family; his maternal grandfather, Thomas Pryor Gore, served as United States senator from Oklahoma (1907–21 and 1931–37). As Gore Vidal, he was a Democratic Party politician who twice sought elected office; first to the United States House of Representatives (New York State, 1960), then to the U.S. Senate (California, 1982).
As a political commentator and essayist, Vidal's principal subject was the history of the United States and its society, especially how the militaristic foreign policy of the National Security State reduced the country to decadent empire. His political and cultural essays were published in The Nation, the New Statesman, the New York Review of Books, and Esquire magazines. As a public intellectual, Gore Vidal's topical debates on sex, politics, and religion with other public intellectuals and writers, occasionally became continual quarrels with the likes of William F. Buckley Jr. and Norman Mailer. As such, and because he thought that men and women potentially are bisexual, Vidal rejected the adjectives "homosexual" and "heterosexual" when used as nouns, as inherently false terms used to classify and control people in society.
Rodrigo "Rody" Roa Duterte (born March 28, 1945), nicknamed Digong, is a Filipino lawyer and politician of Visayan descent. Duterte is among the longest-serving mayors in the Philippines. He has been mayor of Davao City, a highly urbanized city on Mindanao island, for 7 terms, totalling more than 22 years. He has also served as vice-mayor and congressman in the city.
On November 21, 2015, Duterte declared his candidacy for President of the Philippines in the upcoming 2016 election after a period of banter.
Duterte was born on March 28, 1945 in Maasin, Leyte in the Philippine Commonwealth to Vicente G. Duterte, who served as Governor of (the then-undivided) Davao and Soledad Roa, a native of Cabadbaran, Agusan who was a school teacher and a civic leader. Duterte's father Vicente, prior to being provincial governor of Davao, was once a mayor of Danao in Cebu. Rodrigo's cousin Ronald, on the other hand, served as Cebu City mayor from 1983 to 1986. Ronald’s father, Ramon Duterte, also held the position from 1957 to 1959. The Dutertes consider the political families of the Durano and the Almendras clan as relatives.
Donald John Trump, Sr. (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessperson and media personality. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump's career, branding efforts, personal life, wealth, and outspoken manner have made him famous throughout the country. Since 2015, he is also a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election.
Trump is a native of New York City and a son of Fred Trump, who inspired him to enter real estate development. After two years at Fordham University and while studying at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Trump worked for his father's firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son. Upon graduating in 1968 he joined the company, and in 1971 was given control, renaming the company "The Trump Organization". Since then he has built hotels, golf courses, and other properties, many of which bear his name. He is a major figure in the American business scene and has received prominent media exposure. The NBC reality show The Apprentice bolstered his fame, and his three marriages were extensively reported in tabloids.
This week Craig looks at the expressed powers of the President of the United States - that is the ones you can find in the Constitution. From appointing judges and granting pardons, to vetoing laws and acting as the nation’s chief diplomat on foreign policy, the Commander in Chief is a pretty powerful person, but actually not as powerful as you might think. The Constitution also limits presidential powers to maintain balance among the three branches of government. Next week we'll talk about the president's powers NOT mentioned in the Constitution - implied powers. Just in time for the 2012 election, this engaging, interactive lesson traces the history of the American presidency and features a special introduction by ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos—former adviser and communications director for President Bill Clinton. Join constitutional experts and the Center's education staff to explore why it was important for our young nation to have an executive branch, and why nevertheless some people were worried about giving it too much power. We'll also take a trip to a very special location in America's presidential history. We'll be hailing to the chief as we ring in the Constitution's 225th anniversary!
So much of what we were taught of American history in school is pure propaganda. Read "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn, and "The American Revolution: a Grand Mistake" by Leland Stauber.

Filipinos love an action man, not just in the movies but in politics too. And you can't get more of an action man than politician Rodrigo Duterte. His hometown, Davao City, was once a violent no-go area overrun by criminals. But he turned it around when he became mayor, wielding brutal tactics including, allegedly, death squads. Now the hard man of city hall wants to take on the presidency and despite - or maybe because of - his fearsome approach, this outspoken statesman has a real chance of winning the top seat. 101 East joins him on the road as he campaigns for the Philippines' presidency. Marcel the 13-year-old music journalist interviews Andrew Jackson Jihad at The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, California. Special thanks to Marc, the band's tour manager who filmed the interview, and Launch Brigade for helping upload the interview. After we did the interview, me and lead singer Sean headed over to the local skate park to do some shredding. The next morning, we all met up yet again to have some fun down at the arcade at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Me, Sean, Ben and the band's tour manager (who filmed the interview) played a couple rounds of air hockey for some footage they were shooting for an upcoming music video. After that we then headed over to the local record shop Metavinyl to pick up some goodies. It was overall just an unforgettable experience that I will be foreve...

I talked to Sean Bonnette from the band Andrew Jackson Jihad. Andrew Jackson Jihad, or AJJ, is one of the most influential folk punk bands today, with some of the most wonderfully cynical lyrics I've ever heard. Last September saw the release of their newest album, Can't Maintain, on Asian Man Records. The whole interview can be found here: http://www.punkcdsampler.com/sean-bonnette-interview.html This interview was done live during my PunkCDSampler Live Show, broadcasted on my site.

February 22, 2016 – This week, we sling-shot around the sun at high warp, sending us tumbling back in time to the Summer of 1832 — and America, at war. It’s not a conflict over land or of arms, but over the fiscal system of the young republic. Our guide on this journey is Paul Kahan, and his book is The Bank War: Andrew Jackson, Nicholas Biddle, and the Fight for American Finance. The fight against the Second Bank of the United States may have been the most frustrating fight of President Jackson’s life, since — for once — he couldn’t end things by simply shooting or threatening to shoot his opponent in the face. Dr. Kahan holds a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Temple University, an M.A. in Modern American History & Literature, and B.A.s in history and English. He’s also the author of two boo...
"Almost President: The Agony of Defeat" is the story of what happens when you lose the presidency. Watch Gloria Borger's special report Wednesday, September 14, at 9 p.m. ET.
After riffing on Donald Trump today, President Obama decided he needed to “vent” about the media during a rally for Hillary Clinton today. “You don’t grade the presidency on a curve,” he said. “This is serious business.” He said Clinton is far more transparent than Trump and there’s no contest between them on their respective foundations and qualifications. Obama argued, “Because we’ve become so partisan, our standards for what’s normal have changed.” And so he concluded that Trump’s statements––which would disqualify literally anyone else from the presidency––come so fast and so often, “the press just gives up.”

Michael Eric Dyson is one of our nation’s premier intellectuals and a staunch defender of civil discourse. Nowhere is this more evident than in his keen-eyed view of the Obama presidency. By turns heralding and lambasting, Dyson follows the President’s navigation of race and racism in America—including the national crisis spawned by the traumatic killings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, and others. Now with his long-awaited book, "The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America," Dyson returns to Chicago to discuss the meaning of America’s first black presidency. Dyson will be joined in conversation by Laura Washington, columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times and political analyst for ABC-7 Chicago. This program was recorded on Feb 8, 2016. See upcoming...
