Sacred Harp
Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of sacred choral music that originated in the American South of the United States. The name is derived from The Sacred Harp, a ubiquitous and historically important tunebook printed in shape notes. The work was first published in 1844 and has reappeared in multiple editions ever since. Sacred Harp music represents one branch of an older tradition of American music that developed over the period 1770 to 1820 from roots in New England, with a significant, related development under the influence of "revival" services around the 1840s. This music was included in, and became profoundly associated with, books using the shape note style of notation popular in America in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Sacred Harp music is performed a cappella (voice only, without instruments) and originated as Protestant Christian music.
The music and its notation
The name of the tradition comes from the title of the shape-note book from which the music is sung, The Sacred Harp. This book exists today in various editions, discussed below.

Due to illness, the project lay in the drawer for a few years. I hope all Sacred Harp singers enjoy watching it. Commissioned for the 2012 South Carolina All-State High School Band, Jay's impressive three-movement suite based on melodies from the early American “Sacred Harp” singing tradition is a masterwork of dramatic orchestrational devices. “Stratfield” opens with a striking statement by the saxes and double reeds, then builds intensity using woodwind flourishes and soaring brass lines. “Idumea” begins in a quiet and delicate manner then gives way to thundering percussion and striking harmonic effects. The joyous “Pisgah” has a barn dance quality that provides the perfect conclusion to this powerful work for winds.

Krankheitsbedingt lag das Projekt einige Jahre in der Schublade. Ich wünsche allen Sacred Harp-SängerInnen viel Spaß beim ansehen. This documentary about Sacred Harp in Bremen dates back to 2012. We (Gunnar and Daniela) came across the group in Bremen as fellow singers back then and have made this film. Due to illness, the project lay in the drawer for a few years. I hope all Sacred Harp singers enjoy watching it. Sacred Harp
Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of sacred choral music that originated in the American South of the United States. The name is derived from The Sacred Harp, a ubiquitous and historically important tunebook printed in shape notes. The work was first published in 1844 and has reappeared in multiple editions ever since. Sacred Harp music represents one branch of an older tradition of American music that developed over the period 1770 to 1820 from roots in New England, with a significant, related development under the influence of "revival" services around the 1840s. This music was included in, and became profoundly associated with, books using the shape note style of notation popular in America in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Sacred Harp music is performed a cappella (voice only, without instruments) and originated as Protestant Christian music.
The music and its notation
The name of the tradition comes from the title of the shape-note book from which the music is sung, The Sacred Harp. This book exists today in various editions, discussed below.
