Kutch literally means something which intermittently becomes wet and dry; a large part of this district is known as Rann of Kutch which is shallow wetland which submerges in water during the rainy season and becomes dry during other seasons. The same word is also used in the languages of Sanskrit origin for a tortoise. The Rann is famous for its marshy salt flats which become snow white after the shallow water dries up each season before the monsoon rains.
The district is also famous for ecologically important Banni grasslands with their seasonal marshy wetlands which form the outer belt of the Rann of Kutch.
Kutch District is surrounded by the Gulf of Kutch and the Arabian Sea in south and west, while northern and eastern parts are surrounded by the Great and Small Rann (seasonal wetlands) of Kutch

The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India and the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is about 7,505.22 square kilometres (2,897.78 sq mi) in size and is reputed to be one of the largest salt desert in the world. This area has been inhabited by the Kutchi people.
The name "Rann" comes from the Hindi word ran (रण) meaning "desert". The Hindi word is derived from Sanskrit/Vedic word iriṇa (इरिण) attested in the Rigveda and Mahābhārata. As early as 325 BCE, Alexander the Great was aware of the area.

THE WONDERFUL AND BEAUTIFUL HERITAGE VILLAGE OF KUTCHCH
Kutch region has it’s own identity, unique existence and indifferent natural resources. It is said that; A land of full cultural heritage, original peculiarities, kaleidoscopic colorfulness and amazing life style is none other than excellent land of Kutch in Gujarat
.
There are many Historical and Pre-Historical places in Kutch. God has showered amazing natural beauty on this land. Tera Village is the at the Top in consideration of other villages of Abdasa. “Tera” is declared First Heritage Village of Kutch by Central Govt. and Govt. of Gujarat jointly. This village is supposedly 800 to 1000 years old. The great and artistic entry-door of fort is the centre of attraction for Artique lovers. In the village of Tera there are Wall paintings of Kamagiri style. These paintings are one hundred thirty years old and they are centre of attraction for the tourist and visitors. These painting and pictures are mainly based on Episode of Ramayan. All these beautiful and artistic sculptures, paintings and pictures justify the Heritage Village category of the Tera Village. Over and above these, thirty to forty ancient temples are situated around the village of Tera. In these, Modeshwari Mataji Temple, Jain Temple are more than 350 years old.
There are many peculiarities of the region of Kutch. One of the said peculiarities is the Handi -Craft of Kutch. The art and craft of Kutchi people is like traditional heritage. The village “Tera” is famous for it’s Bhandhnis. This art has been awarded Eleven National Awards and Three Merit Certificates from Central Government. Each and every lane, house and family with each and every human beings of Tera Village inhale art & craft and produce unique artistic handicrafts and many other things. It is just their birth right.
Tera Village was felicitated and honored as Jagir. There were fifty two small villages under this Jagir of Tera Village. Before 150 years, British Govt. had established five post offices in the region of Kutch. One of these five old post offices is still situated in the village of Tera.

Kutch district (also spelled as Kachchh) is a district of Gujarat state in western India. Covering an area of 45,652 km², it is the largest district of India. The population of Kutch is 21 Lac, literacy rate is 59.79% and the sex ratio is 951. It has 10 Talukas, 1389 villages and 6 Municipalities

The district is well connected by road, rail and air. There are four airports in the district, Naliya,Kandla, Mundra, and Bhuj, which is well connected with Mumbai. Being a border district, Kutch has both and an army and an airforce base.

Hemant Chauhan
Hemant Chauhan is a Gujarati writer and singer. He specializes in Bhajan, religious and Garba songs and other folk genres. He received 'Akademi Ratna Award 2011' for his contribution to traditional folk music of Gujarat on 9 October 2012. He is frequently referred to as the Bhajan King of Gujarati Music, and is also considered to be one of the best singers of Sugam Sangeet. He has a huge fan base and following all over the world including India (mainly in Gujarat), United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America and East Africa. His fan base outside of India is made up of people of Gujarati Heritage.It is believed that his performances of bhajans and devotional music have the ability to carry the listener into a tranquil, relaxed and serene world. He has a charismatic personality that enthrals his listeners with his effortless voice and charm. With an extensive catalogue of hit songs and bhajans, his “Kathiya Wadi Lok Dayra and Bhajan Sandhya” concert tour in North America in early 2007 was a huge hit. Hemant Chauhan is thus revered as a legend in India and has released many albums of devotional music.

The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India and the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is about 7,505.22 square kilometres (2,897.78 sq mi) in size and is reputed to be one of the largest salt desert in the world. This area has been inhabited by the Kutchi people. The name "Rann" comes from the Hindi word ran (रण) meaning "desert". The Hindi word is derived from Sanskrit/Vedic word iriṇa (इरिण) attested in the Rigveda and Mahābhārata. It is said that; A land of full cultural heritage, original peculiarities, kaleidoscopic colorfulness and amazing life style is none other than excellent land of Kutch in Gujarat . There are many Historical and Pre-Historical places in Kutch. God has showered amazing natural beauty on this land. Tera Village is the at the Top in consideration of other villages of Abdasa. “Tera” is declared First Heritage Village of Kutch by Central Govt. and Govt. of Gujarat jointly. This village is supposedly 800 to 1000 years old. The great and artistic entry-door of fort is the centre of attraction for Artique lovers. In the village of Tera there are Wall paintings of Kamagiri style. These paintings are one hundred thirty years old and they are centre of attraction for the tourist and visitors. About Rann Utsav (Also known as Desert Festival Kutch)
The Rann Kutch Utsav, Organized by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, is held during the full moon time in winters every year, and people from far and near gather to celebrate the spirit and warmth of the Kutchi people. With numerous cultural activities organized, the grasslands of the Banni host a colorful diversity of arts and crafts of the region. The Festival presents various forms of dances and music under the shade of a full moon, in an aura of a chilling yet serene winter.
A grand Tent City of 400 consisting of both Ac and non-AC tents has been set up on the outskirts of village Dhorado in the Rann.

There are many Historical and Pre-Historical places in Kutch. God has showered amazing natural beauty on this land. Tera Village is the at the Top in consideration of other villages of Abdasa. “Tera” is declared First Heritage Village of Kutch by Central Govt. and Govt. of Gujarat jointly. This village is supposedly 800 to 1000 years old. The great and artistic entry-door of fort is the centre of attraction for Artique lovers. In the village of Tera there are Wall paintings of Kamagiri style. These paintings are one hundred thirty years old and they are centre of attraction for the tourist and visitors. These painting and pictures are mainly based on Episode of Ramayan. All these beautiful and artistic sculptures, paintings and pictures justify the Heritage Village category of the Tera Village. Over and above these, thirty to forty ancient temples are situated around the village of Tera. In these, Modeshwari Mataji Temple, Jain Temple are more than 350 years old.
There are many peculiarities of the region of Kutch. One of the said peculiarities is the Handi -Craft of Kutch. The art and craft of Kutchi people is like traditional heritage. The village “Tera” is famous for it’s Bhandhnis. This art has been awarded Eleven National Awards and Three Merit Certificates from Central Government. Each and every lane, house and family with each and every human beings of Tera Village inhale art & craft and produce unique artistic handicrafts and many other things. It is just their birth right.
Tera Village was felicitated and honored as Jagir. There were fifty two small villages under this Jagir of Tera Village. Before 150 years, British Govt. had established five post offices in the region of Kutch. One of these five old post offices is still situated in the village of Tera.

We visited the wild ass sanctuary at Dasada near Ahmadabad then proceeded to Bhuj via Bhachau. From Bhuj we went to Kala Dungar or Kalo Dungar. The next part would continue from where this part ends and will highlight the white desert at Rann of Kutch and many other places.

Wel come to Kutch Rann Utsav Festival
Kutch literally means something which intermittently becomes wet and dry; a large part of this district is known as Rann of Kutch which is shallow wetland which submerges in water during the rainy season and becomes dry during other seasons.
The same word is also used in the languages of Sanskrit origin for a tortoise. The Rann is famous for its marshy salt flats which become snow white after the shallow water dries up each season before the monsoon rains. The district is also famous for ecologically important Banni grasslands with their seasonal marshy wetlands which form the outer belt of the Rann of Kutch.
Bhungas are closely linked to the identity of Kutch desert areas. A traditional bhunga house has circular mud walls and a thatched roof. The typical diameter of these houses is approx 15-18 feet with a foundation depth of 24 inches. The roof is made of wooden top dome where bamboo sticks are tied together with a dried grass rope which weaved with thick layer of grass is then placed on the roof and securely tied down.
The walls are made of bamboos sticks with a layer of grass tied to it. Mud and cow dung are used as wall plaster over the grass. They are single cylindrical structures put close to each other to form a house. In common terminology, each bhunga would be equivalent to a room in a house.Bhungas are mainly found in desert islands in the northern parts of Kutch region of Gujarat- especially Banni and Pachham.
Best Time to Visit the Rann of Kutch:-
The Rann of Kutch begins to dry up in October every year, steadily transforming into the desolate and surreal salt desert. The tourist season runs until March.
It's best to head out into the Rann of Kutch only in the early morning or evening, otherwise the salt can be blinding. The full moon is the best time of month to see it, and cultural programs are usually held at Dhordo then. Moonlight Rann camel safari is magical.
For a real cultural extravaganza, visit during the month-long Rann Ustav, which usually begins in mid-late December. The government sets up hundreds of luxury tents on the edge of the Rann of Kutch for visitors.

Train Engineer Identified, More Details Emerge From Deadly NJ Train Crash

The engineer who was at the controls during the tragic train crash on Thursday morning was a veteran of the industry with 29 years of experience named Thomas Gallagher, according to The Star Tribune. "It was very shocking," said his neighbor Tom Jones. "I'm just heartbroken for them, they're just wonderful people." ...
