Nebraska i/nəˈbræskə/ is a state that lies in both the Great Plains and the Midwestern United States. Its state capital is Lincoln. Its largest city is Omaha, which is on the Missouri River. The state is crossed by many historic trails and was explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The California Gold Rush brought the first large numbers of non-indigenous settlers to the area. Nebraska was admitted as the 37th state of the United States in 1867. The climate has wide variations between winter and summer temperatures, and violent thunderstorms and tornadoes are common. The state is characterized by treeless prairie, which is ideal for cattle-grazing. It is a major producer of beef, as well as pork, corn, and soybeans. The largest ancestry group claimed by Nebraskans is German American. The state also has the largest per capita population of Czech Americans among U.S. states.
Nebraska's name is derived from transliteration of the archaic Otoe words Ñí Brásge, pronounced [ɲĩbɾasꜜkɛ] (contemporary Otoe Ñí Bráhge), or the Omaha Ní Btháska, pronounced [nĩbɫᶞasꜜka], meaning "flat water", after the Platte River that flows through the state.
The following is a list of political parties whose names (in English) could be translated to Democratic Party or the Democrats.
The Nebraska Democratic Party (NDP) is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the state of Nebraska. As of 2015, the party holds none of Nebraska's statewide offices and one of the state's Congressional seats.
Democrats dominated Nebraska until 1860. In 1890, Democrat William Jennings Bryan ran for President three times but lost every time. The state has elected more Democrats to the governor seat and into Congress.
Nebraska passed a referendum in 1937 and it is the country's only unicameral legislature known as the Nebraska Unicameral. It is a nonpartisan single-house system.
Nevertheless, despite the lack of party registration, party primaries or party-based caucasing, senators in the legislature are informally affiliated with political parties in the state by party endorsements and campaign support. In the 2012 election, it was estimated that 17 senators were Democratic affiliates.
Bernard "Bernie" Sanders (born September 8, 1941) is an American politician and the junior United States Senator from Vermont. He is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. A Democrat as of 2015, Sanders had been the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history, though his caucusing with the Democrats entitled him to committee assignments and at times gave Democrats a majority. Sanders has been the ranking minority member on the Senate Budget Committee since January 2015, and previously served for two years as chair of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee.
Sanders was born and raised in the New York City borough of Brooklyn and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964. While a student, he was an active civil rights protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. After settling in Vermont in 1968, Sanders ran unsuccessful third-party campaigns for governor and U.S. senator in the early to mid-1970s. As an independent, he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont's most populous city, in 1981, and was reelected three times. In 1990, he was elected to represent Vermont's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1991, Sanders co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. In 2012, he was reelected with 71% of the popular vote. During the 2016 presidential primaries, Sanders became the first self-described democratic socialist and first Jewish American to win a presidential primary of a major party, namely the New Hampshire primary.

Excuse me if I don't shed a tear over news that THIS guy is retiring next year. That's right - Ben Nelson - the Democratic Senator - in name only - from Nebraska announced that he will not be seeking a third term next year. Nelson leaves behind quite a legacy as the - to quote the Huffington Post - "Human Impediment to Progress" He held President Obama's health reform bill hostage until he could extract some special deals for just his home state. He joined Republicans to block benefits for the unemployed. He stood in the way of meaningful Wall Street reform. He helped Republicans kill foreclosure assistance legislation for struggling families. He blocked energy reform legislation. And he even bucked Democrats and voted against confirming Supreme Court Jusice Elena Kagan t...
