A young father who lost four limbs and half his face to a flesh-eating bug has recalled the devastating moment his son looked at him and recoiled in horror.
Alex Lewis was left fighting for his life after a common cold triggered a strep A infection, blood poisoning and toxic shock syndrome.
Doctors gave him a three per cent chance of survival, but the 35-year-old battled against the odds to make a remarkable recovery.
Over the past two years he has endured countless gruelling operations to rebuild his face and learned how to walk again with prosthetics.
Now, his extraordinary story will be told in a new documentary which begins filming just days after he was almost eaten alive.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning before the documentary airs tonight, he describes how his young son struggled to come to terms with his drastically altered appearance.
So shocked was Sam, then three, that he could no longer bring himself to kiss his father's disfigured face, meaning the pair struggled to bond.
He told presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Phillip Schofield: 'It was an awful period. I was a stay at home father for more than two years before I fell ill.
'It was fantastic, we had a very close bond. Then all of a sudden you’re thrust into something you don’t have any control over.
He continued: 'Your face is completely unrecognisable and for a little boy to look at that, having seen his father upright, legs, arms, looking normal.
'It was very hard – for the both of us – we both struggled.
'He’s great now, completely fine about it. He’ll give me a hug, a kiss.'
Mr Lewis added the experience has made him understand what is important to him and has revived his enthusiasm for being alive.
He said: 'I read a book called Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl, and it said you need to think about questions like "why you are here" - and the "how" will follow.
'As I read it I thought "That really applies to my experience".
'Now I know my "Why?" is Lucy and Sam. And the "How?" - how I look now - that we can cope with.'
He said he had asked Lucy to be his wife after years of refusing to marry her when she asked him.
Now, the pair are fundraising for a £180,000 microprocessor knee joints that would allow him to walk and play with Sam again.
The documentary - called The Extraordinary Case of Alex Lewis - follows the family gradually rebuilding their lives, including the relationship between Mr Lewis and his partner Lucy.
The father-of-one has previously said he wants his story to be shared and his photos published so he can be a role model to his son Sam.
'I want my son to be proud of me and at ease in his skin and with everything he does.
'You have no clue what life is going to throw at you and you have to deal with it as it comes. I don't want him to stress about the little things in life.'
His nightmare ordeal began in November 2013 when he caught a common cold, and tests later revealed he had contracted Group A streptococcus.
The normally harmless bacteria is usually filtered out by the body but in this case, it developed into septicaemia (blood poisoning) and toxic shock syndrome.
Mr Lewis's major organs shut down and he spent a week in a coma as the deadly bacteria wreaked havoc through his body.
After his feet, fingertips, arms, lips, nose and part of his ears turned black, doctors were forced to amputate both his legs above the knee and his left arm.
He also lost part of his nose, his lips and underwent a pioneering 16-hour operation to reconstruct his remaining arm in a bid to save it.
The show tracks his rehabilitation, during which he had to have multiple operations to reconstruct his face and re-learn to walk with two prosthetic legs.
Speaking about the reaction following his surgery, he recalls: 'People saw that I'd lost parts of my body but what people couldn't see was the impact it had on my family life.'
Two years ago, shortly after his horrific ordeal, he said: 'All Sam talks about now is "daddy when you get your legs you can kick a ball about in the garden" and "when you get your legs you can do this, that and the other".

Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas, pronounced [ʎɔː.əs̪], also Isle of Lewis) is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides (an archipelago) of Scotland. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles (1,770 km2).
Lewis is, in general, the lower lying part of the island, with the other part, Harris, being more mountainous. The flatter, more fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway, and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. Beyond human habitation, the island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seals and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.

The Extraordinary
The Extraordinary was an Australian television documentary series that featured stories of the paranormal and supernatural. It ran on the Seven Network from 1993 to 1996. The following year it moved to the Nine Network.
History
The show was hosted by Warwick Moss, who would narrate to the audience "true life" tales of the paranormal. Stories on the show revolved around a wide variety of subjects including alien abduction, ghosts, tales of clairvoyance and cryptozoological creatures such as the yowie. The show had a distinct local slant, with stories on the 1987 Nullarbor UFO incident or the appearance of a headless ghost in a music video for the Australian band 1927.
The Extraordinary was one of very few Australian programs to crack the US Market. United States It ran as a syndicated program from 1994 until 1996, hosted by Corbin Bernsen.

He continued: 'Your face is completely unrecognisable and for a little boy to look at that, having seen his father upright, legs, arms, looking normal. 'It was very hard – for the both of us – we both struggled. 'He’s great now, completely fine about it. He’ll give me a hug, a kiss.' Mr Lewis added the experience has made him understand what is important to him and has revived his enthusiasm for being alive. He said: 'I read a book called Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl, and it said you need to think about questions like "why you are here" - and the "how" will follow. 'As I read it I thought "That really applies to my experience". 'Now I know my "Why?" is Lucy and Sam. And the "How?" - how I look now - that we can cope with.' He said he had asked Lucy to be his wife after years of refusing to marry her when she asked him. Now, the pair are fundraising for a £180,000 microprocessor knee joints that would allow him to walk and play with Sam again. The documentary - called The Extraordinary Case of Alex Lewis - follows the family gradually rebuilding their lives, including the relationship between Mr Lewis and his partner Lucy. The father-of-one has previously said he wants his story to be shared and his photos published so he can be a role model to his son Sam. 'I want my son to be proud of me and at ease in his skin and with everything he does. 'You have no clue what life is going to throw at you and you have to deal with it as it comes. I don't want him to stress about the little things in life.' His nightmare ordeal began in November 2013 when he caught a common cold, and tests later revealed he had contracted Group A streptococcus. The normally harmless bacteria is usually filtered out by the body but in this case, it developed into septicaemia (blood poisoning) and toxic shock syndrome. Mr Lewis's major organs shut down and he spent a week in a coma as the deadly bacteria wreaked havoc through his body. After his feet, fingertips, arms, lips, nose and part of his ears turned black, doctors were forced to amputate both his legs above the knee and his left arm. He also lost part of his nose, his lips and underwent a pioneering 16-hour operation to reconstruct his remaining arm in a bid to save it. The show tracks his rehabilitation, during which he had to have multiple operations to reconstruct his face and re-learn to walk with two prosthetic legs. Speaking about the reaction following his surgery, he recalls: 'People saw that I'd lost parts of my body but what people couldn't see was the impact it had on my family life.' Two years ago, shortly after his horrific ordeal, he said: 'All Sam talks about now is "daddy when you get your legs you can kick a ball about in the garden" and "when you get your legs you can do this, that and the other". -

A young father who lost four limbs and half his face to a flesh-eating bug has recalled the devastating moment his son looked at him and recoiled in horror. A young father who lost four limbs and half his face to a flesh-eating bug has recalled the devastating moment his son looked at him and recoiled in horror.
Alex Lewis was left fighting for his life after a common cold triggered a strep A infection, blood poisoning and toxic shock syndrome.
Doctors gave him a three per cent chance of survival, but the 35-year-old battled against the odds to make a remarkable recovery.
Over the past two years he has endured countless gruelling operations to rebuild his face and learned how to walk again with prosthetics.
Now, his extraordinary story will be told in a new documentary which begins filming just days after he was almost eaten alive.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning before the documentary airs tonight, he describes how his young son struggled to come to terms with his drastically altered appearance.
So shocked was Sam, then three, that he could no longer bring himself to kiss his father's disfigured face, meaning the pair struggled to bond.
He told presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Phillip Schofield: 'It was an awful period. I was a stay at home father for more than two years before I fell ill.
'It was fantastic, we had a very close bond. Then all of a sudden you’re thrust into something you don’t have any control over.
He continued: 'Your face is completely unrecognisable and for a little boy to look at that, having seen his father upright, legs, arms, looking normal.
'It was very hard – for the both of us – we both struggled.
'He’s great now, completely fine about it. He’ll give me a hug, a kiss.'
Mr Lewis added the experience has made him understand what is important to him and has revived his enthusiasm for being alive.
He said: 'I read a book called Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl, and it said you need to think about questions like "why you are here" - and the "how" will follow.
'As I read it I thought "That really applies to my experience".
'Now I know my "Why?" is Lucy and Sam. And the "How?" - how I look now - that we can cope with.'
He said he had asked Lucy to be his wife after years of refusing to marry her when she asked him.
Now, the pair are fundraising for a £180,000 microprocessor knee joints that would allow him to walk and play with Sam again.
The documentary - called The Extraordinary Case of Alex Lewis - follows the family gradually rebuilding their lives, including the relationship between Mr Lewis and his partner Lucy.
The father-of-one has previously said he wants his story to be shared and his photos published so he can be a role model to his son Sam.
'I want my son to be proud of me and at ease in his skin and with everything he does.
'You have no clue what life is going to throw at you and you have to deal with it as it comes. I don't want him to stress about the little things in life.'
His nightmare ordeal began in November 2013 when he caught a common cold, and tests later revealed he had contracted Group A streptococcus.
The normally harmless bacteria is usually filtered out by the body but in this case, it developed into septicaemia (blood poisoning) and toxic shock syndrome.
Mr Lewis's major organs shut down and he spent a week in a coma as the deadly bacteria wreaked havoc through his body.
After his feet, fingertips, arms, lips, nose and part of his ears turned black, doctors were forced to amputate both his legs above the knee and his left arm.
He also lost part of his nose, his lips and underwent a pioneering 16-hour operation to reconstruct his remaining arm in a bid to save it.
The show tracks his rehabilitation, during which he had to have multiple operations to reconstruct his face and re-learn to walk with two prosthetic legs.
Speaking about the reaction following his surgery, he recalls: 'People saw that I'd lost parts of my body but what people couldn't see was the impact it had on my family life.'

This past year has been very rough for me. I lost my Mtv show, struggled with the relationship with my mother, dealing with racism and homophobia in the industry and self image was such a struggle. I put my all into auditioning for NBC's "The Wiz" and got so close to landing the role of the Scarecrow, but didn't get it. I want to thank my family, friends and fans for helping me out of this dark place and encouraging me to turn my struggle into art. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has always held a special place in my heart, and I have never been more proud of anything I've created. Thank you all for standing by me on this crazy yellow brick road we call life. Enjoy "Straight Outta Oz" and I hope to see you all this summer when we perform it live. FIFA 17 'The Journey' FULL MOVIE is a video edit project of my gameplay mixed with cinematics in 1080p 60fps of the single-player story mode: The Journey in FIFA 17. Play as Alex Hunter, a touted prospect, on a journey to make his mark in the Premier League. ► https://www.easports.com/fifa
I've never been into the FIFA games and have no interest in soccer/football, but because EA decided to put in this story 'The Journey', I had to check it out and now discovered I enjoyed the gameplay. Wouldn't have had any interest otherwise; EA Canada has done good work before implementing a story into Fight Night Champion, which I also made a full movie for ►https://youtu.be/QctuRv-1kJY
Credit to the actors, writers, but most importantly the composer: Atticus Ross. The music in the game allows the story to leave a lasting and emotional impression.
