South Northamptonshire is a district in Northamptonshire, England. Its council is based in the town of Towcester, first established as a settlement in Roman Britain.
The largest town in the district is Brackley, which had a population of 14,000 in 2008 followed by Towcester which has a population of nearly 10,000. Other significant settlements in size include Deanshanger, Bugbrooke, Roade, King's Sutton, Silverstone and Middleton Cheney. Many of the villages listed have populations exceeding 1000.
The northern half of the district is generally higher than the south, reaching 192m northeast of the centre of Aston-le-Walls AOD and 182m on the road east of Culworth, a village which also rests on top of the ridge following the general WSW line of the county and of the district but except for this is north of the district. This ridge is part of the Jurassic Way. Lower parts are at 85m AOD (above mean sea level) in the southwest corner and 50 m (160 ft) AOD in the northeast.
South Northamptonshire is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since its 2010 recreation by Andrea Leadsom, a Conservative.
Before 2010, the constituency existed from 1832–1918, and from 1950-1974, however on different boundaries during each period. It elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) by the bloc vote system of election from 1832, until the representation was reduced in 1885 to one member elected by the first past the post system.
Three names feature prominently among the area's Commons members, the 3rd and 5th Earl Spencer (during their tenures as MP having a courtesy title only, Viscount Althorp - Althorp is a major country house in the seat, well known as the childhood home of Princess Diana of Wales); Edward Fitzroy (son of Lord Southampton), Speaker of the House of Commons from 1928 until his death in 1943; and lastly, Reginald Manningham-Buller, 1st Viscount Dilhorne who on accomplishment of a peerage sat for the final two years of his life as the historic equivalent of the President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom with additional functions, the Lord Chancellor.

Northamptonshire (/nɔːrˈθæmptənʃər/ or /nɔːrθˈhæmptənʃɪər/; abbreviated Northants.) is a county in the East Midlands of England. In 2011, it had a population of 629,000. The county is administered by Northamptonshire County Council and seven non-metropolitan district councils.
Covering an area of 2,364 square kilometres (913 sq mi), Northamptonshire is landlocked between eight other counties: Warwickshire to the west, Leicestershire and Rutland to the north, Cambridgeshire to the east, Bedfordshire to the south-east, Buckinghamshire to the south, Oxfordshire to the south-west and Lincolnshire to the north-east – England's shortest county boundary at 19 metres (62 ft). Northamptonshire is the southernmost county in the East Midlands region.
Apart from the county town of Northampton, other large population centres include Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Rushden and Daventry. Northamptonshire's county flower is the cowslip.
The county constituency of Northamptonshire, in the East Midlands of England was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England, then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832 and was represented in Parliament by two MPs, traditionally known as Knights of the Shire.
After 1832 the county was split into two new constituencies, North Northamptonshire and South Northamptonshire.
The constituency consisted of the historic county of Northamptonshire. Although the county contained a number of parliamentary boroughs, each of which elected one or two MPs in its own right for parts of the period when Northamptonshire was a constituency, these areas were not excluded from the county constituency. Owning freehold property of the required value, within such boroughs, could confer a vote at the county election. (After 1832, only non-resident owners of forty shilling freeholds situated in borough seats could qualify for a county vote on the basis of that property.)
Prior to its uniform adoption of proportional representation in 1999, the United Kingdom used first-past-the-post for the European elections in England, Scotland and Wales. The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each.
The constituency of Northamptonshire was one of them.
When it was created in England in 1979, it consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies of Aylesbury, Buckingham, Daventry, Harborough, Kettering, Northampton North, Northampton South, although this may not have been true for the whole of its existence.
The second video in my series of village walks around the county of Northamptonshire. This walk takes us from the charming village of Blisworth, situated five miles south of Northampton, along the course of the Grand Union Canal tunnel, which is the longest navigable canal tunnel in England. The walk takes us to the even more charming village of Stoke Bruerne, which is home to the Canal Museum and is a major tourist attraction in the county. Music licensed through Artlist
#northampton #northamptonshire #guildhall Northampton is a town in Northamptonshire, East Midlands, England. An Interesting fact is that Northampton is still a town - not a city. It is one of the largest towns in England with the population 224 000. Thus, Northamptonshire is city-less county. This video was made during our very short evening visit to this lovely town. You can see Guildhall, Market Square, town's central streets with some interesting details. Enjoy the walk and song. Music used in this video: https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/em4osl/

This walk takes us from the market town of Oundle along the banks of the River Nene to Cotterstock and then on to the Historic village of Fotheringhay.
