Traditional animation (or classical animation, cel animation or hand-drawn animation) is an animation technique where each frame is drawn by hand. The technique was the dominant form of animation in cinema until the advent of computer animation.
Animation productions begin with the deciding on a story. The oral or literary source material must then be converted into an animation film script, from which the storyboard derives. The storyboard has an appearance somewhat similar to a comic book, and it shows the sequence of shots as consecutive sketches that also indicate transitions, camera angles and framing. The images allow the animation team to plan the flow of the plot and the composition of the imagery. The storyboard artists will have regular meetings with the director, and may have to redraw or "re-board" a sequence many times before it meets final approval.
Before true animation begins, a preliminary soundtrack or "scratch track" is recorded, so that the animation may be more precisely synchronized to the soundtrack. Given the slow, methodical manner in which traditional animation is produced, it is almost always easier to synchronize animation to a pre-existing soundtrack than it is to synchronize a soundtrack to pre-existing animation. A completed cartoon soundtrack will feature music, sound effects, and dialogue performed by voice actors. However, the scratch track used during animation typically contains only the voices, any vocal songs to which characters must sing along, and temporary musical score tracks; the final score and sound effects are added during post-production.

Today's episode on the String Bing Workshop is about traditional animation skills and habits to keep when approaching 2D hand drawn animation. We talk about traditional animation techniques that will help for the digital medium, and habits to stay away from. Animators and animation fans can see the future of 2D animation in this inside look of the 85th Academy Award Oscar winning short "Paperman", the animated short film that is now playing in front of "Wreck It Ralph". The behind-the-scenes featurette demonstrates some of the techniques used to combine 2D animation and 3D animation. The technique uses traditional hand drawn 2D animation by carrying the information with the 3D CG using a program dubbed "Meander" created by Eric Daniels. Recently I have been learning traditional 2D animation. The best way of learning anything i have found is to recreate. Studying the masters of Disney I have put together my first real attempt to animate. 129 individual hand drawn sketches later we have this. It's still very rough and i can take no credit for the characters obviously but i am very pleased with the result. This has taught me a lot in a very short (relatively) time. Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change[Note 1] by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, pap...

Created by David James Armsby. A masked vigilante people are calling the "Reaper" is hunting down former Overwatch operatives. He is specifically targeting those connected to the explosion at Swiss Overwatch HQ which resulted in the death of Strike Commander Jack Morrison and Gabriel Reyes. Thought to be a hoax or simply a ghostly myth, the Reaper's victims are found pale, gaunt and drained of their life-force. Perhaps there is truth to this phantom? This took a lot of work. I'm NEVER doing an animation like this again! XDD This has so little actual animation in it, and so much more hand-drawings and graphic design. It took so much time and I'm not as proud of the result as I thought I would be. I'm glad I did it but it's back to traditional animation for me! =P I wanted to do a trailer...
Digging through some files, and found this animation I did years back when I was in school. Still pretty smooth when I look back at it.
This is my first try at traditional animation. In earlier animations, each frame was drawn on a computer, that is 2-d animation. In this, each frame was drawn on a sheet of paper, then scanned. That is traditional animation. Older animated movies (before 3-d) were animated like this.
This tutorial takes you through the process of creating traditional 2D animation in Photoshop to be applied over live-action video. We'll discuss the planning of live-action shots with animation in mind, video editing continuity and creating video reference for our animation. Moving on to animation we'll then create the key poses using rough animation to complete our full movement, then create our final line images for the poses. Next we'll be coloring our animation, applying shadows and reflections to marry our character to the environment, and editing our animation back into our live action edit. By the end of this tutorial, you will have a more thorough understanding of how to create traditional animations digitally that work successfully within a live-action video background. ===== ...
Get the Animation test! http://bit.ly/1NX46jm AMB Animation Academy presents this detailed step by step tutorial on Traditional Hand Drawn character animation. The scene is a female character similar to the popular 'Disney Princess' style of characters doing a standard head turn action. The educational video outlines the process of sketching key frames and extreme poses and then making breakdown drawings that go in between the key images. The next step in the process is to make a spacing chart that will determine the timing of the scene and placement of the in-between drawings. In-betweens are essential frames that have to be drawn by the assistant animator to finalise the animation and give it a flowing, smooth finish. Ideally the key frames and break down frames should go through the ...
Click Here to get the study companion Book http://bit.ly/1UXbyB7 A.M.B Animation Academy Presents this traditional animation video tutorial on how to animate secondary action. Demonstrated as step by step drawing with an easy to draw construction method I guide the viewer through the process of drawing and animating an arm and then sketching clothing on top. Many students interested in how to draw cartoons have requested tutorials from me based on this topic and I have answered their call. I display the entire procedure of animating an arm and then sketching a loose sleeve on top of the rough drawings. I also explain the process of timing the 2d animation via the traditional method of drawing a spacing chart. It doesn’t matter if you want to learn how to draw anime or Disney these te...

A video how I work with Photoshop to make an animation of traditional frames (drawn beforehand). I know it has a lot of flaws, but I'm still proud of it :3 Maybe you can learn something, even if you skip the most boring parts.
