Palau /pəˈlaʊ/ (help·info), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles (3,200 km) south of Tokyo. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest sovereign states. In English, the name is sometimes spelled Belau in accordance with the native pronunciation. It was formerly also spelled Pelew.[3]
Palau's most populous islands are Angaur, Babeldaob, Koror, and Peleliu. The latter three lie together within the same barrier reef, while Angaur is an oceanic island several miles to the south. About two-thirds of the population live on Koror. The coral atoll of Kayangel is situated north of these islands, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (about 200) are situated to the west of the main island group. A remote group of six islands, known as the Southwest Islands, some 375 miles (600 km) from the main islands, are also part of the country and make up the states of Hatohobei and Sonsorol.

Palau enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an annual mean temperature of 82 °F (28 °C). Rainfall can occur throughout the year, averaging a total of 150 inches (3,800 mm). The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.
Consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. Business and tourist arrivals numbered 50,000 in the financial year 2000/2001. The population enjoys a per capita income twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.
In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.
Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

The South Pacific Tourism Organization (SPTO), an intergovernmental agency based in Fiji is assisting in co-managing Palau's Alii Host program.
SPTO has funded a number of individuals in the government sector to take part in the Alii Host customer service based training program in efforts to enhance their skills in communicating and interacting with tourists.
Filipe Tuisawau, SPTO's Human Resource Development Specialist, recently visited Palau to check on the progress of the program, observe the training and gather feedbacks from both the Tri-Org and the participants.
He says the program, which is administered by the Tri-Org, consisting of the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA), Belau Tourism Association (BTA) and the Palau Chamber of Commerce (PCOC), is helping to empower those in the frontline such as customs and immigrations officers, who will be meeting the tourists first before they go their respective accommodations.
"These people are critical because they give the first impression of the country," said Tuisawau. "That's why were working with BTA and PVA in this training."
He says not only is it important to empower those in the frontline, it's also important that they appreciate what tourism is and how important it is to Palau.

Palau (
i/pəˈlaʊ/, historically Belau or Pelew), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. The country's population of around 21,000 is spread across 250 islands, which form the western chain of the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. The most populous of these is Koror. The capital Ngerulmud is located on the nearby island of Babeldaob, in Melekeok State. Palau shares maritime boundaries with Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The country was originally settled around 3,000 years ago by migrants from the Philippines and sustained a Negrito population until around 900 years ago. The islands were first visited by Europeans in the 16th century, and were made part of the Spanish East Indies in 1574. Following Spain's defeat in the Spanish–American War in 1898, the islands were sold to Imperial Germany in 1899 under the terms of the German–Spanish Treaty, where they were administered as part of German New Guinea. The Imperial Japanese Navy conquered Palau during World War I, and the islands were later made a part of the Japanese-ruled South Pacific Mandate by the League of Nations. During World War II, skirmishes, including the major Battle of Peleliu, were fought between American and Japanese troops as part of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign. Along with other Pacific Islands, Palau was made a part of the United States-governed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1947. Having voted against joining the Federated States of Micronesia in 1979, the islands gained full sovereignty in 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States.

In the mid 80s, 45 or so years after the age of the "aventis," a doctor and a nurse-nun (who grew up together, and now are co-workers in a hospital) identify the corpse of one of the main characters of the "aventis" of their childhood and adolescence. Besides the interesting flashbacks - a chronical of the Civil War in a "typical" Barcelona microcosm itself, the discovery of this body (belonging to someone long presumed dead) leads to other surprises and unresolved doubts, several decades later.

The coral atoll of Kayangel is situated north of these islands, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (about 200) are situated to the west of the main island group. A remote group of six islands, known as the Southwest Islands, some 375 miles (600 km) from the main islands, are also part of the country and make up the states of Hatohobei and Sonsorol.

Palau enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an annual mean temperature of 82 °F (28 °C). Rainfall can occur throughout the year, averaging a total of 150 inches (3,800 mm). The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.
Consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. Business and tourist arrivals numbered 50,000 in the financial year 2000/2001. The population enjoys a per capita income twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.
In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.
Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

It is commendable that the state of Palau tries to stem the tide in its territory by far-reaching conservation measures. Almost 60% of the marine environment is protected. In 2009 Palau became the first shark sanctuary in the world and in 2012 Unesco added Palau's Rock Islands to the World Heritage List. -

Dive sites include Ulong Channel, German Channel, Blue Corner, Blue holes, Chandelier Cave, New Drop Off, Siaes Corner, Siaes Tunnel, Big Drop Off, Orange Beach, Peleliu Cut, Peleliu Express, Ngedebus, Iro Maru, Jelly Fish lake etc.
I used a Sony RX100 M2 in a nauticam housing and an Inon wide angle lens UWL-H100 28M67 Typ II. For lightning I have two Sola lights, a 2100 Video and a 2000 video. A couple shots were also taken with a GoPro Black 3+.

Aunte Paula making a Belauan staple called Billum. Ingredients are tapioca roots grated and then mixed with coconut milk. You then wrap the mixture into coconut leave and boil for 4 to 6 hours...not 2 hours. I misunderstood my Aunte Sera when she actually said 4 hours. -

In cultural news, today is the Constitution Day of Palau, honoring the ratification of its fundamental governing principles in 1979. An archipelago in the North Pacific Ocean southeast of the Philippines, Palau consists of over 300 islands. It has a greater diversity of marine species compared to any other area of similar size on the planet. This includes a variety of corals, sea cucumbers, and much more. Due to this outstanding variety of life, Palau is considered one of the world's top scuba-diving sites. We wish the gentle residents of Palau a celebratory Constitution Day. -

Palau's Arts And Culture Director Dismissed
By Rolynda Jonathan Palau's Arts and Culture Director Dwight Alexander has been dismissed from duty for alleged mismanagement and inexcusable neglect of duty. A four-page letter addressed to Alexander, outlines his alleged mismanagement of the national parks services projects. Alexander who received the termination letter on April 30th told OTV that he intends to appeal, but declined to comment further. OTV also contacted Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs Baklai Temengil-Chilton who stated that he was not terminated and is on administrative leave, but declined to comment further. The matter is set to go before the grievance panel where a final decision will be made on the termination. -

Fiji National University Helps Certify Palau's Dental Hygienists
The Fiji National University recently helped certify ten of Palau's dental assistance to hygienists. Through assistance from the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), a professor from the Fiji National University's Oral Health Department flew in to help certify the hygienists. Dr. Louisa Santos, Dentist and President of the Pacific Basin Dental Association, says the program although began in 2008 was without funding, however practical training continued until the Palau Oral Health Department sought assistance to certify them. Palau 2012 Members Hands Over Donation To The Hospital
On August 2, Palau 2012 forum officially handed over monetary donations to the Belau National Hospital in commemoration of their 2nd anniversary. Over $2,000 in monetary donation was presented to Minister of Health Greg Ngirmang in checks and cash, towards medicinal expenses. Minister Ngirmang expressed appreciation for the donation and assured the members that the donation would be deposited into a separate account for medicinal supplies. Who does not like a bowl full of nutrition at the meal table? When hunger crosses all limits and you need to put together something really quick for meal, the delicious and healthy Spinach Soup (Palak Soup) is the answer. Check out chef Ruchi Bharani's take on this popular soup recipe.
Ingredients:
1 bunch of spinach, blanched & pureed
1 small onion
1/2 cup milk
1 tbsp all purpose flour
1/2 tbsp butter
crushed black pepper
salt to taste
water as required
Method:
- Heat butter in a pan.
- Once the butter melts, add the plain flour and mix well to avoid lumps.
- Once the mixture changes colour slightly, add the milk and let it come to a boil.
- Add the spinach and onion puree to the saucepan and mix well.
- Add water and bring the soup to a boil.
- Add salt, crushed black pepper and little sugar and mix well.
- The delicious and healthy spinach soup is ready to be served.

Through assistance from the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), a professor from the Fiji National University's Oral Health Department flew in to help certify the hygienists.
Dr. Louisa Santos, Dentist and President of the Pacific Basin Dental Association, says the program although began in 2008 was without funding, however practical training continued until the Palau Oral Health Department sought assistance to certify them.
The dental assistance went through a 10-week intensive training course before they were awarded with their certificates.
On June 21, during their brief ceremony at the Belau National Hospital, the new hygienists also took their oaths following the awarding of their certificates.

On August 2, Palau 2012 forum officially handed over monetary donations to the Belau National Hospital in commemoration of their 2nd anniversary.
Over $2,000 in monetary donation was presented to Minister of Health Greg Ngirmang in checks and cash, towards medicinal expenses.
Minister Ngirmang expressed appreciation for the donation and assured the members that the donation would be deposited into a separate account for medicinal supplies.
During the brief meeting, Minister Ngirmang took the opportunity to update the members on its renovation efforts as well as took the members around for a brief tour of the hospital.
The members toured the newly opened cafeteria, which caters to patients, employees as well as visitors as well the ICU and other areas.
In celebration of their 2nd year anniversary, the members voted and decided to make a donation to the hospital.

Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia. It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia.
It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water.
We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. We visited the rustic ranger station on the tiny sand spit of an island. We found them pretty self-sufficient, and resourceful. The island is a bird sanctuary and a nesting ground for hundreds and hundreds of birds squawking day and nite. The rangers tape off the area at the beginning of laying, but later, visitors can walk the length of the island and marvel in the sheer numbers and the beauty of their graceful flight.
During our visit, the Rangers, Louis, Jamos and Matthew, showed us a number of their duties for the Conservation area, and they took us to a number of important sites on the reef. Every day they check-in with the main office in Palau, and file a report. They patrol Illegal fishing activity on the reef, greet visitors, monitor the bird nesting, turtle egg laying, and the Giant Clam farm. They maintain the navigation and mooring buoys as well.
We were able to scuba dive at 3 sites, and record some of the rich marine life of the reef. At the old Japanese cargo shipwreck, only anchors and a few shards of pottery are left, but the reef is pretty with several white-tip lagoon sharks cruising the dramatic drop-off. One dive in the inner lagoon on one of the branches of the pass had the most gigantic lettuce leaf coral formation we’d ever seen. The dive in the Pass was action-packed; we were spinning our necks in every direction, not knowing what to look at next! All the sharks, schools of jacks, rainbow runners, barracudas, the giant grouper, turtle, and the rare and beautiful manta ray, were all seen during one dive!
Visiting the Giant Clam farm was inspiring, we’ve visited other Giant Clam farms, but they are usually instituted after the population has been depleted; at Helen Reef, they are everywhere in every size and every incredible color, and we saw them all over the reef system, not just in the farm area. We were happy to see this easily exploited mollusk protected and allowed to grow to its normal gigantic size.
We thank Jamos and his wife, Samdrina, Louis, and Matthew, the staff who manned the Helen Reef Ranger Station while we were there, for their wonderful hospitality, and for taking us around the reef, and for the fun filming sessions. Filmed in November 2014.

I'm about to find out why. A 45-minute boat ride. Now we're going to hike 20 minutes to jelly fish lake. The hike takes us to the other side of the tree tops. Welcome to jelly fish trail. Definitely humid. Everything we need, cameras and gear, our crew, and my local guide Jake, carried through the roads. He's carrying all the gear. And without shoes. Is there these are my working shoes. Reporter: A few more steps and there it is. Oh, yeah, we're getting into it now. As we swim out, I spot a few. And then, boom. Jelly fish nation. Oh, my god. There's so many. Like floating through a living lava lamp. 20 million swirling globes of golden marshmallow puffs. But get this. The miraculous thing about these jelly fish? They don't sting. Lack of predators not only has caused them on multiply buzz has caused them to lose their stinging cells. Reporter: Oh, my gosh. So cool. This sun believable. It really is. So special. But the truth is, whether you come to Palau to snorkel at this sunken ship turned barrier reef, scuba dive with the sharks and napoleons, or swim with the jelly fish, just being in this place, witnessing the wonder of nature, will make you feel like a kid again. Wow, that was special. That was Palau. Now I can't wait to show you where we take you next. 1800 nautical miles west. Stick around. That's on her way to what she's going to show us. Is there that was just a pit stop. Life in a lava lamp. I love that. To be able to go through the jelly fish and trust. We should say they're not totally stingless, they retain some stinging cells. The new short web based film for non profit environmental organisation Pangea Seed. During February we saw alot of feeding behaviour from all sorts of marine life in Palau. In this months Coconut news item I cover the hunting and feeding behaviour we have witnessed in Palau. A sample of the article is written below:
Food. We all need it. Every living being on our planet needs food to survive including ourselves. However for animals (particularly marine life), gathering food is not a simple case of popping down to the local super market and picking out a favourite dish. They have to fight for their food and use all the inherent hunting and feeding instincts they have to survive. The marine environment has a very delicate food chain which, if sufficiently disrupted will create consequences not just damaging to the marine environment, but to life on land too.
Sharks are at the top of this delicate food chain. They are the top predators and their feeding behaviour controls the number of fish lower down this food chain. The importance of sharks in the marine environment is monumental. If sharks worldwide continued to be hunted for their fins then obviously there will be fewer sharks in our oceans. With less sharks in our oceans, species lower down the food chain will then be able to flourish to proportions not intended by nature. On the surface this may not seem like a problem but if you look closer you can see that less sharks could have devastating consequences for life on earth.
Algae on the whole accounts for over 80% of the global oxygen on our planet. As mentioned before, parrotfish eat mainly algae that grow on coral reefs. If there are less sharks their will inevitably be more numbers of smaller fish lower down the food chain such as parrotfish and other algae feeders. More algae feeders will result in fewer algae for our oceans. The less algae and consequentially the less oxygen can be made for the planet. It is a simple concept to understand yet a concept being largely ignored by almost every country in the world, especially the country's profiting from the shark fin trade. To disrupt the number of top predators in a food chain can never lead to any good future, for anyone. Sharks have dominated and controlled the marine environment for thousands of years dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. A healthy marine environment is imperative for a healthy planet. Sharks have been a key species in maintaining a healthy planet for millennia. Never has this marine environment been more at risk and seen such devastating changes as it has in the past 100 years, since man has really made its impact felt. But people can make a difference. Recent dramas in Egypt prove that. When enough people work together for a common cause anything is possible. Support for organisations like Pangea Seed is vital for a brighter future. We can make a difference. Its simple, support our oceans and support ourselves.

El grup Manel ha estat, sens dubte, el fenomen de l'any 2009 en el panorama musical català. Ningú no podia aventurar que, després de presentar-se a la Sala Heliogàbal, del barri de Gràcia (Barcelona), un local on es mostra el millor de l'escena independent i alternativa catalana, arribarien a fer 80 concerts en gairebé un any i que el seu disc de debut, "Els millors professors europeus", assoliria xifres de vendes rècords en el seu àmbit. Arribats aquí, els Manel van decidir posar fi a l'allau d'esdeveniments i concerts que començaven a col·lapsar la capacitat creativa i compositiva del grup. I ho van fer al mes de gener, oferint dos concerts al Palau de la Música Catalana en què van haver de penjar el cartell d'"Entrades exhaurides". Luis Palau ya entró en la historia moderna como uno de los contados hombres que le hablaron a más personas en el mundo.Su mensaje fue, y es escuchado por más de 800 millones de personas en 112 países a través de la radio y la televisión, y tiene el privilegio de haberle hablado a más de 22 millones de personas cara a cara en 80 países del mundo, organizando, junto a un selecto grupos de colaboradores internacionales y con el apoyo de invitaciones locales, congresos, seminarios, charlas informales, conferencias y recitales-conferencia llamados “Festivales”.
Luis Palau nació en un pequeño pueblo de la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina, en 1934. En el año 1961 , se casó con Patricia , con quien tiene cuatro hijos y 10 nietos .
Es un hombre de personalidad atrapante, sencillo en su forma de ser pero profundo a la hora de comunicar. Logra captar la atención dondequiera que va. Sus mensajes están orientados a la unidad familiar con el fin de rescatar y elevar los valores morales y éticos del Cristianismo Bíblico.
Ciudades y naciones han oído a través suyo una clara exposición sobre temas sociales que afectan al ser humano y recibieron una alternativa que fortalece los vínculos familiares, la autoestima y el deseo de la gente por superarse y vivir una vida plena de felicidad, paz y amor.
Palau nació en una familia católica de clase media. Su padre falleció cuando él tenía diez años de edad.
Estudió en la escuela San Albano (en Buenos Aires), colegio anglicano reconocido por el programa de inglés de Cambridge. En 1946 se acercó a un pequeño templo protestante, donde se convirtió al evangelismo. Palau deseaba convertirse en abogado para ayudar a las viudas como su madre; pero tuvo que empezar a trabajar a los 18 años. [1]
En 1953 comenzó a predicar los fines de semana mientras durante la semana trabajaba en un banco. En 1957 él (de 22 años) y otros amigos organizaron un programa de evangelismo en carpas y un programa religioso evangélico en una radio porteña.
Viajó a Estados Unidos, donde estudió en el seminario Multnomah School of the Bible, en Portland (Óregon). En esa ciudad se quedó a vivir (hasta la actualidad).
En 1961 se unió a una organización evangélica denominada SEPAL (actualmente OC International), para predicar a hispanohablantes. Ese año se casó con Patricia Scofield y consiguió así la nacionalidad estadounidense. Con su esposa Pat, Palau tendría cuatro hijos: los mellizos Kevin y Keith (1963), Andrés (1966) y Esteban (1969). Más tarde incluso tendría 10 nietos.
En diciembre de 1966 (con 32 años de edad) celebró su primera «campaña evangelística» en Bogotá (Colombia). Un año más tarde fue nombrado director de SEPAL para América Latina, y comenzó a formar un equipo de evangelización. Admirador de Billy Graham, Palau siguió fielmente sus métodos, hasta que tuvo el éxito suficiente como para independizarse, en octubre de 1978. Palau —con el equipo que había formado— abandonó SEPAL y fundó una nueva organización: la «Asociación Luis Palau».
Desde entonces dio un enfoque latino al estilo estadounidense: el evangelismo orientado hacia el mercado. Sus mitines fueron diseñados, sobre todo, para la televisión. Por ejemplo, en una cruzada en 1982 en Guatemala la audiencia únicamente llenaba parte del estadio. Entonces, Palau hizo sentar a las personas detrás del escenario, para dar a las cámaras en el campo de juego una impresión de estadio lleno. Cuando Palau agitaba la Biblia sobre su cabeza, lo hacía hacia los lentes de la cámara y no hacia el público presente.
Su predicación se centra en Argentina, Canadá, EE. UU., Guatemala y el Reino Unido especialmente.

El grup Manel ha estat, sens dubte, el fenomen de l'any 2009 en el panorama musical català. Ningú no podia aventurar que, després de presentar-se a la Sala Heliogàbal, del barri de Gràcia (Barcelona), un local on es mostra el millor de l'escena independent i alternativa catalana, arribarien a fer 80 concerts en gairebé un any i que el seu disc de debut, "Els millors professors europeus", assoliria xifres de vendes rècords en el seu àmbit.
Arribats aquí, els Manel van decidir posar fi a l'allau d'esdeveniments i concerts que començaven a col·lapsar la capacitat creativa i compositiva del grup. I ho van fer al mes de gener, oferint dos concerts al Palau de la Música Catalana en què van haver de penjar el cartell d'"Entrades exhaurides". D'aquesta manera els Manel tancaven un any de feina per poder allunyar-se una mica de l'èxit i treballar fora dels escenaris.
El concert d'aquest particular comiat va ser molt especial i va comptar amb la presència d'una coral de setze veus, la irrupció a platea d'una petita orquestra de metall i la màgia d'aquest grup que en tan poc temps ha sabut arribar a un públic molt ampli amb unes cançons que expliquen històries pròximes, amb una sonoritat gairebé domèstica i amb una capacitat de comunicació tan eficaç com entranyable.
Aquest és el concert que us oferim la nit tan especial de la revetlla de Sant Joan del 2010 pel canal 33 a les 22:45 hores.
