Semitic people
In linguistics and ethnology, was first used to refer to a language family of largely Middle Eastern origin, now called the Semitic languages. This family includes the ancient and modern forms of Akkadian, Amharic, Arabic, Aramaic, Ge'ez, Hebrew, Maltese, Phoenician, Tigre and Tigrinya among others.
As language studies are interwoven with cultural studies, the term also came to describe the extended cultures and ethnicities, as well as the history of these varied peoples as associated by close geographic and linguistic distribution.

The name Semite/Semitic comes from the Semitic root Sama or Sam, meaning " High" or "Risen", Semite or Semitic means " Sons of the Lord " Or " Sons of Heaven" Also meaning " Noble People ".

"The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today released the results of an unprecedented worldwide survey of anti-Semitic attitudes. The ADL Global 100: An Index of Anti-Semitism surveyed 53,100 adults in 102 countries and territories in an effort to establish, for the first time, a comprehensive data-based research survey of the level and intensity of anti-Jewish sentiment across the world.
The survey found that anti-Semitic attitudes are persistent and pervasive around the world. More than one-in-four adults, 26 percent of those surveyed, are deeply infected with anti-Semitic attitudes. This figure represents an estimated 1.09 billion people around the world."

A while back, Vsauce did a video with a bright yellow thumbnail titled "this is not yellow." His point was that the pixels on a screen only ever actually produce red, green and blue light, and that there were no beams of light coming from that thumbnail that would have, alone, been perceived as "yellow." He was wrong, of course, in saying that the thumbnail wasn't yellow, but only because he was defining "yellow" differently from how we normally use the word, and he was using that misuse of terminology to teach people about the nature of color.
This video was my attempt to do something similar. Of course English isn't semitic. I knew that when I made this video. That was the point, I wanted to have a provocative title which was blatantly wrong. For the sake of teaching people about the origin of different scripts, I decided to define a "language" as everything encompassed in the written form of a language including the script (which isn't how we normally use the word, nor should it be) and define language inheritance around the language's script (which REALLY isn't how we normally use those words, nor should it be). At the end I get into why this isn't actually even a viable way to think about it for a number of reasons.
In hindsight, none of this was very clear at all in this video, so I apologize for that. I was still pretty new at making videos when I made this, and a lot of stuff about it really embarrasses me, including how unclear I was about what I ment. However, I've decided to keep it up on my channel for historical purposes. I want people to be able to see all of my work, even the stuff that makes me cringe when I go back and watch it myself.

Semitic people
The term Semitic people or semitic cultures (from the biblical "Shem", Hebrew: שם) was a historical term for people or cultures who speak or spoke the Semitic languages. The racial or ethnic use of the term, together with the parallel terms Hamitic and Japhetic, is now obsolete.
As language studies are interwoven with cultural studies, the term also came to describe the extended Semitic religions and ethnicities, as well as the history of these varied cultures as associated by close geographic and linguistic distribution.
History
The region of origin of the reconstructed Proto-Semitic language, ancestral to historical and modern Semitic languages in the Middle East, is still uncertain and much debated. However, a recent Bayesian analysis identified an origin for Semitic languages in the Levant (modern Syria and Lebanon) around 3750 BC with a later single introduction from what is now Southern Arabia into the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia) around 800 BC. Other theories include an origin in either Mesopotamia, the Arabian Peninsula or North Africa. The Semitic language family is also considered a component of the larger Afroasiatic macro-family of languages. Identification of the hypothetical proto-Semitic region of origin is therefore dependent on the larger geographic distributions of the other language families within Afroasiatic, whose origins are also hotly debated. According to Christy G. Turner II, there is an archaeological and physical anthropological reason for a relation between the modern Semitic-speaking populations of the Levant and the Natufians.

A while back, Vsauce did a video with a bright yellow thumbnail titled "this is not yellow." His point was that the pixels on a screen only ever actually produce red, green and blue light, and that there were no beams of light coming from that thumbnail that would have, alone, been perceived as "yellow." He was wrong, of course, in saying that the thumbnail wasn't yellow, but only because he was defining "yellow" differently from how we normally use the word, and he was using that misuse of terminology to teach people about the nature of color. This video was my attempt to do something similar. Of course English isn't semitic. I knew that when I made this video. That was the point, I wanted to have a provocative title which was blatantly wrong. For the sake of teaching people about the origin of different scripts, I decided to define a "language" as everything encompassed in the written form of a language including the script (which isn't how we normally use the word, nor should it be) and define language inheritance around the language's script (which REALLY isn't how we normally use those words, nor should it be). At the end I get into why this isn't actually even a viable way to think about it for a number of reasons. In hindsight, none of this was very clear at all in this video, so I apologize for that. I was still pretty new at making videos when I made this, and a lot of stuff about it really embarrasses me, including how unclear I was about what I ment. However, I've decided to keep it up on my channel for historical purposes. I want people to be able to see all of my work, even the stuff that makes me cringe when I go back and watch it myself. -

The name Semite/Semitic comes from the Semitic root Sama or Sam, meaning " High" or "Risen", Semite or Semitic means " Sons of the Lord " Or " Sons of Heaven" Also meaning " Noble People ".

In the Bible The name Semite comes from Shem, the eldest of the three sons of Noah. In the Greek and Latin versions of the Bible, Shem becomes Sem, since neither Greek nor Latin has any way of representing the initial sound of the Hebrew name.
The Bible tells us that everyone on earth was drowned except for Noah and his family and that all mankind are descended from his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The lines of descent from the three of them, described in the tenth chapter of Genesis, represent a kind of mythologized ethnology, enumerating the peoples of antiquity whose names were known at the time when this chapter was written, and setting forth the relationships between them.

A while back, Vsauce did a video with a bright yellow thumbnail titled "this is not yellow." His point was that the pixels on a screen only ever actually produce red, green and blue light, and that there were no beams of light coming from that thumbnail that would have, alone, been perceived as "yellow." He was wrong, of course, in saying that the thumbnail wasn't yellow, but only because he was defining "yellow" differently from how we normally use the word, and he was using that misuse of terminology to teach people about the nature of color.
This video was my attempt to do something similar. Of course English isn't semitic. I knew that when I made this video. That was the point, I wanted to have a provocative title which was blatantly wrong. For the sake of teaching people about the origin of different scripts, I decided to define a "language" as everything encompassed in the written form of a language including the script (which isn't how we normally use the word, nor should it be) and define language inheritance around the language's script (which REALLY isn't how we normally use those words, nor should it be). At the end I get into why this isn't actually even a viable way to think about it for a number of reasons.
In hindsight, none of this was very clear at all in this video, so I apologize for that. I was still pretty new at making videos when I made this, and a lot of stuff about it really embarrasses me, including how unclear I was about what I ment. However, I've decided to keep it up on my channel for historical purposes. I want people to be able to see all of my work, even the stuff that makes me cringe when I go back and watch it myself.
