Richard Alan Bonynge AC, CBE (/ˈbɒnɪŋ/ BON-ing) (born 29 September 1930) is an Australian conductor and pianist. He is the widower of Australian dramatic coloratura soprano Dame Joan Sutherland. Bonynge conducted virtually all of Sutherland's operatic performances from 1962 until her retirement in 1990.
Bonynge was born in Epping, New South Wales, Sydney and educated at Sydney Boys High School before studying piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and gaining a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London, where his piano teacher was Herbert Fryer. He gave up his music scholarship, continuing his private piano studies, and became a coach for singers. One of these was Joan Sutherland, whom he had accompanied in Australia. They married in 1954 and became a duo, performing operatic recitals until 1962. When the scheduled conductor for a recital of operatic arias became ill and the replacement conductor was involved in a car accident, Bonynge stepped in and, from that time on, he conducted virtually all of his wife's performances.
The Germanic first or given name Richard derives from German, French, and English "ric" (ruler, leader, king) and "hard" (strong, brave), and it therefore means "powerful leader". Nicknames include "Dick", "Dickie", "Rich", "Richie", "Rick", "Ricky", "Rickey", and others.
"Richard" is a common name in many Germanic languages, including English, German, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, and Dutch. It can also be used as a French, Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian name.

Two straight-talking, hard-working Aussies. This film is an up-front depiction of the intensity and amount of hard work and preparation that goes into not just making a CD, but also giving a performance of ease and grace and building an entire musical career. Celebrated conductor Richard Bonynge is frank about what it takes to be a bel canto singer, while fellow Australian, soprano Elena Xanthoudakis, is both undaunted and utterly captivated by the bel canto repertoire. The CD, released on Signum Classics in March 2014, includes arias by Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini and Verdi. Interesting to hear some of Bonynge's ideas on opera.
Luciano Pavarotti sings A te o cara from act I of Bellini's I Puritani. Joan Sutherland is singing Elvira. This is a sensational performance, beautifully sung. Live 1976 - I Puritani - The Metropolitan opera orchestra conducted by Richard Bonynge
Il trovatore, by Giuseppe Verdi. Performed live at the Sydney Opera House, July 2, 1983. Sung by Joan Sutherland, Kenneth Collins, Lauris Elms, and Jonathan Summers. Conducted by Richard Bonynge. Directed by Elijah Moshinsky. Recorded by Opera Australia.

'An hour with Joan Sutherland'(1965)
This is just a small introduction to bel canto music, with the most important singers at that time: Joan Sutherland Marilyn Horne Luciano Pavarotti Richard Bonynge
Part of a soon-to-be-released CD of Wallace's piano music on Naxos. This is the only piece involving orchestra. Very nice to work with Richard Bonynge again and a fun little session with lots of enthusiastic musicians - The Tait Chamber Orchestra. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to fix a the main frontal shot - hence the shots are a bit inconsistent - had to 'zoom in' on Richard. Oh well.... I was assisted by the ubiquitous James Walsh and this is the third of these Wallace CDs with Rosemary Tuck.
