Alchemy: Dire Straits Live è un album doppio live della rock-band britannica Dire Straits, che raccoglie il meglio dalle registrazioni dal vivo dei concerti all'Hammersmith Odeon di Londra nel luglio 1983 durante una tappa del tour mondiale fatto dalla band subito dopo l'uscita del precedente lavoro Love Over Gold.
Si tratta del primo album live dei Dire Straits.
Nella storia della musica Rock è spesso ricordato in quanto nella post produzione è stata mantenuta con assoluta fedeltà la registrazione dal mixer, compresi rumori e distorsioni. Il risultato è un album ufficiale dal sapore di un bootleg.
La copertina riproduce una parte di un'opera dell'artista Brett Whiteley denominata Alchemy 1974. Per qualche strana scelta della casa discografica al momento della pubblicazione vennero però esclusi molti brani che vennero invece suonati. La scaletta integrale, ricavabile da molte fonti e documentata su alcuni bootleg, fu la seguente:

Alchemy: Dire Straits Live is the first live album by British rock band Dire Straits, released in 1984 (see 1984 in music). It features their best-known tracks up to that point, often featuring reworked arrangements and extended improvisational segments.
The cover image is taken from a painting by Brett Whiteley.
Alchemy was remastered and re-released (in the UK only) on May 8, 2001.
The concert film was originally released in Beta, VHS video cassette and Laserdisc formats, and digitally remastered in 1995.
A DVD and Blu-ray version with newly remixed 5.1-surround mixes were released in May 2010. The new mixes have been prepared by Chuck Ainlay in 2009. The original film itself will be digitally enhanced.[3] The song "Love over Gold" is not included in the video, just like the original album, but is contrarily the one performance available on DVD so far, being included in the compilation Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits.
The video opens with scenes of the band in a pub playing pool, interspersed with concert clips. Playing over this is the song "Saturday Night at the Movies" performed by The Drifters. The music changes to the instrumental "Stargazer", from the film Local Hero, over external shots of a sold-out Hammersmith Odeon. The scene switches to the inside of the venue as Dire Straits are announced and walk onstage for the concert.
The closing credits again use the Drifters' "Saturday Night at the Movies".

Alchemy is the philosophy and practice of liberating a physical substance from its "fixed" physical properties. But the most important thing to understand is that there can be no external alchemy without there first being internal alchemy.
Alchemy covers several philosophical traditions spanning some four millennia and several continents, but we can sum it up in this way... Alchemy is the philosophy and practice of liberating a physical substance from its "fixed" physical properties.
Like other sciences, early alchemists used scientific processes, in other words techniques that could be replicated in a lab. But unlike other sciences, you cannot separate the scientific process of alchemy from hermetic principals and spirituality. Those principals and spiritual truths are the basis upon which alchemy stands.
It was believed that without achieving a form of enlightenment or inner spiritual revelation, the truths of the universe (which would enable you to transcend temporal reality) would not ever be learned and known to the practitioner. There would be no hope of you transcending the fixed properties of the physical dimension so as to transform something like ordinary metal into gold without gaining access to the higher truths of this universe through spiritual practice and mastery.
The Great Work of Alchemy is often described as a series of four stages, which are represented by colors:
Nigredo (a blackening or melanosis), which represents a process of putrefaction or decomposition. In this stage, ingredients had to be cleansed and cooked extensively. Internally, this represents a kind of spiritual death and the confronting of one's shadow aspect.
Albedo (a whitening or leucosis). The washing away of impurities. The physical subject (such as ingredient) is to be purified and divided into two opposing principles. Internally, this represents re gaining the original purity and receptivity of the soul. Symbolically, it represents the process of washing away the ashes to find the soul.
Citrinitas (a yellowing or xanthosis). This refers to transmutation and the actual turning of a subject (such as an ingredient) into its highest state such as silver into gold. Internally, this represents awakening...becoming a manifestation of the soul. Becoming a walking embodiment of the soul, rather than a muted reflection of it. It is a process of anything turning into a higher form of itself.
Rubedo (a reddening, purpling, or iosis). Rubedo refers to the end state; alchemical success. Achievement of the perfected state... The final state of perfection of a subject (such as an ingredient). It can be interpreted as achieving enlightened consciousness and the total fusion of spirit and matter. This stage is often represented by the symbol of the phoenix.
In summation, alchemy can be defined simply as the conscious, intentional process of transmutation, purification, and perfection of _____________ (fill in the blank).
But the most important thing to understand is that there can be no external alchemy without there first being internal alchemy.

A tale of a betrayed love that once burned so bright, the official music video for Above & Beyond's "Alchemy" (feat. Zoë Johnston) begins with a jilted lover (Mackenzie Firgens) coming face-to-face with the painful realisation that the man she loves is cheating with another woman.

Hermeticism is a religious, philosophical, and esoteric tradition based primarily upon writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus ("Thrice Great"). These writings have greatly influenced the Western esoteric tradition and were considered to be of great importance during both the Renaissance and the Reformation. The tradition claims descent from a prisca theologia, a doctrine that affirms the existence of a single, true theology that is present in all religions and that was given by God to man in antiquity.
Many writers, including Lactantius, Cyprian of Carthage, Augustine, Marsilio Ficino, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Giordano Bruno, Campanella, Sir Thomas Browne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, considered Hermes Trismegistus to be a wise pagan prophet who foresaw the coming of Christianity.
An account of how Hermes Trismegistus received the name "Thrice Great" is derived from the The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, wherein it is stated that he knew the three parts of the wisdom of the whole universe. The three parts of the wisdom are alchemy, astrology, and theurgy.
The Poimandres, from which Marsilio Ficino formed his opinion, states that "They called him Trismegistus because he was the greatest philosopher and the greatest priest and the greatest king." The Suda (10th century) states that "He was called Trismegistus on account of his praise of the trinity, saying there is one divine nature in the trinity."
Much of the importance of Hermeticism arises from its connection with the development of science during the time from 1300 to 1600 AD. The prominence that it gave to the idea of influencing or controlling nature led many scientists to look to magic and its allied arts (e.g., alchemy, astrology) which, it was thought, could put Nature to the test by means of experiments. Consequently, it was the practical aspects of Hermetic writings that attracted the attention of scientists.

Alchemy
Alchemy is a philosophical and protoscientific tradition practiced throughout Egypt and Eurasia which aimed to purify, mature, and perfect certain objects. Common aims were chrysopoeia, the transmutation of "base metals" (e.g., lead) into "noble" ones (particularly gold); the creation of an elixir of immortality; the creation of panaceas able to cure any disease; and the development of an alkahest, a universal solvent. The perfection of the human body and soul was thought to permit or result from the alchemical magnum opus and, in the Hellenistic and western tradition, the achievement of gnosis. In Europe, the creation of a philosopher's stone was variously connected with all of these projects.
In English, the term is often limited to descriptions of European alchemy, but similar practices existed in the Far East, the Indian subcontinent, and the Muslim world. In Europe, following the 12th-century Renaissance produced by the translation of Arabic works on science and the Recovery of Aristotle, alchemists played a significant role in early modern science (particularly chemistry and medicine). Islamic and European alchemists developed a structure of basic laboratory techniques, theory, terminology, and experimental method, some of which are still in use today. However, they continued antiquity's belief in four elements and guarded their work in secrecy including cyphers and cryptic symbolism. Their work was guided by Hermetic principles related to magic, mythology, and religion.

La copertina riproduce una parte di un'opera dell'artista Brett Whiteley denominata Alchemy 1974. Per qualche strana scelta della casa discografica al momento della pubblicazione vennero però esclusi molti brani che vennero invece suonati. La scaletta integrale, ricavabile da molte fonti e documentata su alcuni bootleg, fu la seguente:

A DVD and Blu-ray version with newly remixed 5.1-surround mixes were released in May 2010. The new mixes have been prepared by Chuck Ainlay in 2009. The original film itself will be digitally enhanced.[3] The song "Love over Gold" is not included in the video, just like the original album, but is contrarily the one performance available on DVD so far, being included in the compilation Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits.
The video opens with scenes of the band in a pub playing pool, interspersed with concert clips. Playing over this is the song "Saturday Night at the Movies" performed by The Drifters. The music changes to the instrumental "Stargazer", from the film Local Hero, over external shots of a sold-out Hammersmith Odeon. The scene switches to the inside of the venue as Dire Straits are announced and walk onstage for the concert.
The closing credits again use the Drifters' "Saturday Night at the Movies".

Alchemy is the philosophy and practice of liberating a physical substance from its "fixed" physical properties. But the most important thing to understand is that there can be no external alchemy without there first being internal alchemy.
Alchemy covers several philosophical traditions spanning some four millennia and several continents, but we can sum it up in this way... Alchemy is the philosophy and practice of liberating a physical substance from its "fixed" physical properties.
Like other sciences, early alchemists used scientific processes, in other words techniques that could be replicated in a lab. But unlike other sciences, you cannot separate the scientific process of alchemy from hermetic principals and spirituality. Those principals and spiritual truths are the basis upon which alchemy stands.
It was believed that without achieving a form of enlightenment or inner spiritual revelation, the truths of the universe (which would enable you to transcend temporal reality) would not ever be learned and known to the practitioner. There would be no hope of you transcending the fixed properties of the physical dimension so as to transform something like ordinary metal into gold without gaining access to the higher truths of this universe through spiritual practice and mastery.
The Great Work of Alchemy is often described as a series of four stages, which are represented by colors:
Nigredo (a blackening or melanosis), which represents a process of putrefaction or decomposition. In this stage, ingredients had to be cleansed and cooked extensively. Internally, this represents a kind of spiritual death and the confronting of one's shadow aspect.
Albedo (a whitening or leucosis). The washing away of impurities. The physical subject (such as ingredient) is to be purified and divided into two opposing principles. Internally, this represents re gaining the original purity and receptivity of the soul. Symbolically, it represents the process of washing away the ashes to find the soul.
Citrinitas (a yellowing or xanthosis). This refers to transmutation and the actual turning of a subject (such as an ingredient) into its highest state such as silver into gold. Internally, this represents awakening...becoming a manifestation of the soul. Becoming a walking embodiment of the soul, rather than a muted reflection of it. It is a process of anything turning into a higher form of itself.
Rubedo (a reddening, purpling, or iosis). Rubedo refers to the end state; alchemical success. Achievement of the perfected state... The final state of perfection of a subject (such as an ingredient). It can be interpreted as achieving enlightened consciousness and the total fusion of spirit and matter. This stage is often represented by the symbol of the phoenix.
In summation, alchemy can be defined simply as the conscious, intentional process of transmutation, purification, and perfection of _____________ (fill in the blank).
But the most important thing to understand is that there can be no external alchemy without there first being internal alchemy.

A tale of a betrayed love that once burned so bright, the official music video for Above & Beyond's "Alchemy" (feat. Zoë Johnston) begins with a jilted lover (Mackenzie Firgens) coming face-to-face with the painful realisation that the man she loves is cheating with another woman.
Tapping into all the complex emotion and intensity of the song's lyrics, the story unfolds dramatically with it becoming painfully clear just who is the "golden one" within this love triangle.
Caught by both gripping despair and cathartic release, Firgens' character finally breaks free from the situation - but not the pain - in a dramatic, closing forest scene.
Following on from the appearance of Steven Berkoff in the last video for "On My Way To Heaven" the band have cast Hollywood actress Mackenzie Firgens, the star of classic clubbing movie Groove (with John Digweed) and the brand new Butcher Brothers film The Thompsons. The video is directed by Jonas Mayabb, a previous double winner of the prestigious Young Director Award.

Hermeticism is a religious, philosophical, and esoteric tradition based primarily upon writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus ("Thrice Great"). These writings have greatly influenced the Western esoteric tradition and were considered to be of great importance during both the Renaissance and the Reformation. The tradition claims descent from a prisca theologia, a doctrine that affirms the existence of a single, true theology that is present in all religions and that was given by God to man in antiquity.
Many writers, including Lactantius, Cyprian of Carthage, Augustine, Marsilio Ficino, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Giordano Bruno, Campanella, Sir Thomas Browne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, considered Hermes Trismegistus to be a wise pagan prophet who foresaw the coming of Christianity.
An account of how Hermes Trismegistus received the name "Thrice Great" is derived from the The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, wherein it is stated that he knew the three parts of the wisdom of the whole universe. The three parts of the wisdom are alchemy, astrology, and theurgy.
The Poimandres, from which Marsilio Ficino formed his opinion, states that "They called him Trismegistus because he was the greatest philosopher and the greatest priest and the greatest king." The Suda (10th century) states that "He was called Trismegistus on account of his praise of the trinity, saying there is one divine nature in the trinity."
Much of the importance of Hermeticism arises from its connection with the development of science during the time from 1300 to 1600 AD. The prominence that it gave to the idea of influencing or controlling nature led many scientists to look to magic and its allied arts (e.g., alchemy, astrology) which, it was thought, could put Nature to the test by means of experiments. Consequently, it was the practical aspects of Hermetic writings that attracted the attention of scientists.
