The Roman epic adventure THE EAGLE stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell and is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald. 20 years earlier, Rome's 5,000-strong Ninth Legion, under the command of Flavius Aquila, marched north carrying their treasured golden Eagle emblem. They never returned; Legion and Eagle simply vanished into the mists. Hearing a rumor that the Eagle has been seen in a tribal temple in the far north, Flavius' son Marcus (Tatum), determined to restore the tarnished reputation of his father, is galvanized into action. Accompanied only by his slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out into the vast and dangerous highlands of Scotland - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the hallowed Eagle.
Along the way Marcus realizes that the mystery of his father's disappearance may well be linked to the secret of his own slave's identity and loyalty - a secret all the more pressing when the two come face-to-face with the warriors of the fearsome Seal Prince (Tahar Rahim).

When we hear the name Channing Tatum, we think of romance ("Dear John"), action ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra"), or dance movies ("Step Up") but we never associate the actor with swords-and-sandals epics like his new film "The Eagle."
Set in 140 AD, Tatum stars as Marcus Aguila, a Roman soldier who will do anything to restore his father's reputation. 20 years earlier, the elder Aguila commanded his 5,000-strong Ninth Legion and marched north into Caledonia (today's Scotland), carrying their golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. They never returned.
Director Kevin Macdonald, the guy who gave us the excellent film "The Last King of Scotland," has always been interested in using his film as an etymological look into the clash of cultures. Put two men from two different backgrounds together, make them clash, and let them find deeper friendship in the end.
That formula is evident in the director's first full-feature film "Touching the Void," the Oscar-winning drama "The Last King of Scotland," and to some extent, his first foray into Hollywood filmmaking with "State of Play."
Macdonald, who started his career making documentaries, is interested in finding resolution through chaos. In "The Eagle," the director paired up Marcus with Esca (Jamie Bell), a Briton slave who despises Romans but is forced to become the soldier's slave.
Together, the master and his servant set off across Hadrian's Wall on a dangerous and obsessive quest in finding the Eagle. Their journey will push the pair beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism.
It's interesting to note that besides the familiar U.S.A. symbol, the eagle, the Romans in the film are also instructed to talk with an American accent. In addition to Tatum, there's Donald Sutherland as Marcus' uncle, and a "True Blood" actor, Denis O'Hare, shows up to play Lutorius, Marcus' ally.
Even British actor Mark Strong ("Sherlock Holmes"), who plays a Ninth Legion deserter, is instructed to talk with an American accent. Having the Romans sound like Americans is a decision that is both intriguing and off-putting.
I have to admit that it took me a while to get used to the accent ploy, but once I got into the action of the film, it seemed like a foregone conclusion. Macdonald defended his stance by saying that making Romans talk with American accents is a sign of the times.
In the 40s and 50s, it made sense using British actors to star as Romans because back then, Great Britain was still an empire, similar to the Romans in the early history of the world. Now, it's apparent that America is the new empire with our vast military power.
So is Macdonald equating America with Rome? And with the once mighty Rome falling, is the director presupposing that American civilization will also suffer the same fate? This may be a good documentary for Macdonald to make.
But the director, inspired by Rosemary Sutcliff's novel, aimed to make a rip-roaring adventure with an important quest at its core. He succeeds, for the most part, thanks to the film's fluid energy. Tatum is also believable as an embattled soldier and a bitter son.
My main complaint is the absence of a woman character. Where are the strong mothers, powerful sisters, or heck, even vengeful goddesses? In the end, "The Eagle" dares to be a character study but it morphs into an entertaining swashbuckling adventure.

The Eagle (2011 film)
The Eagle is a 2011 epic historical drama film set in Roman Britain directed by Kevin Macdonald, and starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland. Adapted by Jeremy Brock from Rosemary Sutcliff's historical adventure novel The Eagle of the Ninth (1954), the film tells the story of a young Roman officer searching to recover the lost Roman eagle standard of his father's legion in the northern part of Great Britain. The story is based on the Ninth Spanish Legion's supposed disappearance in Britain.
The film, an Anglo-American co-production, was released in the U.S. and Canada on 11 February 2011, and was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 25 March 2011.
Plot summary
In the year AD 140, twenty years after the Ninth Legion disappeared in the north of Britain, Marcus Flavius Aquila, a young Roman centurion, arrives in Britain to serve at his first post as a garrison commander. Marcus's father disappeared with the eagle standard of the ill-fated legion, and Marcus hopes to redeem his family's honour by bravely serving in Britain. Shortly afterwards, only Marcus's alertness and decisiveness save the garrison from being overrun by Celtic tribesmen. He is decorated for his bravery but honourably discharged due to a severe leg injury.

http://Facebook.com/MannyTheMovieGuy When we hear the name Channing Tatum, we think of romance ("Dear John"), action ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra"), or dance movies ("Step Up") but we never associate the actor with swords-and-sandals epics like his new film "The Eagle." Set in 140 AD, Tatum stars as Marcus Aguila, a Roman soldier who will do anything to restore his father's reputation. 20 years earlier, the elder Aguila commanded his 5,000-strong Ninth Legion and marched north into Caledonia (today's Scotland), carrying their golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. They never returned. Director Kevin Macdonald, the guy who gave us the excellent film "The Last King of Scotland," has always been interested in using his film as an etymological look into the clash of cultures. Put two men from two different backgrounds together, make them clash, and let them find deeper friendship in the end. That formula is evident in the director's first full-feature film "Touching the Void," the Oscar-winning drama "The Last King of Scotland," and to some extent, his first foray into Hollywood filmmaking with "State of Play." Macdonald, who started his career making documentaries, is interested in finding resolution through chaos. In "The Eagle," the director paired up Marcus with Esca (Jamie Bell), a Briton slave who despises Romans but is forced to become the soldier's slave. Together, the master and his servant set off across Hadrian's Wall on a dangerous and obsessive quest in finding the Eagle. Their journey will push the pair beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism. It's interesting to note that besides the familiar U.S.A. symbol, the eagle, the Romans in the film are also instructed to talk with an American accent. In addition to Tatum, there's Donald Sutherland as Marcus' uncle, and a "True Blood" actor, Denis O'Hare, shows up to play Lutorius, Marcus' ally. Even British actor Mark Strong ("Sherlock Holmes"), who plays a Ninth Legion deserter, is instructed to talk with an American accent. Having the Romans sound like Americans is a decision that is both intriguing and off-putting. I have to admit that it took me a while to get used to the accent ploy, but once I got into the action of the film, it seemed like a foregone conclusion. Macdonald defended his stance by saying that making Romans talk with American accents is a sign of the times. In the 40s and 50s, it made sense using British actors to star as Romans because back then, Great Britain was still an empire, similar to the Romans in the early history of the world. Now, it's apparent that America is the new empire with our vast military power. So is Macdonald equating America with Rome? And with the once mighty Rome falling, is the director presupposing that American civilization will also suffer the same fate? This may be a good documentary for Macdonald to make. But the director, inspired by Rosemary Sutcliff's novel, aimed to make a rip-roaring adventure with an important quest at its core. He succeeds, for the most part, thanks to the film's fluid energy. Tatum is also believable as an embattled soldier and a bitter son. My main complaint is the absence of a woman character. Where are the strong mothers, powerful sisters, or heck, even vengeful goddesses? In the end, "The Eagle" dares to be a character study but it morphs into an entertaining swashbuckling adventure. The Roman epic adventure THE EAGLE stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell and is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald. 20 years earlier, Rome's 5,000-strong Ninth Legion, under the command of Flavius Aquila, marched north carrying their treasured golden Eagle emblem. They never returned; Legion and Eagle simply vanished into the mists. Hearing a rumor that the Eagle has been seen in a tribal temple in the far north, Flavius' son Marcus (Tatum), determined to restore the tarnished reputation of his father, is galvanized into action. Accompanied only by his slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out into the vast and dangerous highlands of Scotland - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the hallowed Eagle.
Along the way Marcus realizes that the mystery of his father's disappearance may well be linked to the secret of his own slave's identity and loyalty - a secret all the more pressing when the two come face-to-face with the warriors of the fearsome Seal Prince (Tahar Rahim).

When we hear the name Channing Tatum, we think of romance ("Dear John"), action ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra"), or dance movies ("Step Up") but we never associate the actor with swords-and-sandals epics like his new film "The Eagle."
Set in 140 AD, Tatum stars as Marcus Aguila, a Roman soldier who will do anything to restore his father's reputation. 20 years earlier, the elder Aguila commanded his 5,000-strong Ninth Legion and marched north into Caledonia (today's Scotland), carrying their golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. They never returned.
Director Kevin Macdonald, the guy who gave us the excellent film "The Last King of Scotland," has always been interested in using his film as an etymological look into the clash of cultures. Put two men from two different backgrounds together, make them clash, and let them find deeper friendship in the end.
That formula is evident in the director's first full-feature film "Touching the Void," the Oscar-winning drama "The Last King of Scotland," and to some extent, his first foray into Hollywood filmmaking with "State of Play."
Macdonald, who started his career making documentaries, is interested in finding resolution through chaos. In "The Eagle," the director paired up Marcus with Esca (Jamie Bell), a Briton slave who despises Romans but is forced to become the soldier's slave.
Together, the master and his servant set off across Hadrian's Wall on a dangerous and obsessive quest in finding the Eagle. Their journey will push the pair beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism.
It's interesting to note that besides the familiar U.S.A. symbol, the eagle, the Romans in the film are also instructed to talk with an American accent. In addition to Tatum, there's Donald Sutherland as Marcus' uncle, and a "True Blood" actor, Denis O'Hare, shows up to play Lutorius, Marcus' ally.
Even British actor Mark Strong ("Sherlock Holmes"), who plays a Ninth Legion deserter, is instructed to talk with an American accent. Having the Romans sound like Americans is a decision that is both intriguing and off-putting.
I have to admit that it took me a while to get used to the accent ploy, but once I got into the action of the film, it seemed like a foregone conclusion. Macdonald defended his stance by saying that making Romans talk with American accents is a sign of the times.
In the 40s and 50s, it made sense using British actors to star as Romans because back then, Great Britain was still an empire, similar to the Romans in the early history of the world. Now, it's apparent that America is the new empire with our vast military power.
So is Macdonald equating America with Rome? And with the once mighty Rome falling, is the director presupposing that American civilization will also suffer the same fate? This may be a good documentary for Macdonald to make.
But the director, inspired by Rosemary Sutcliff's novel, aimed to make a rip-roaring adventure with an important quest at its core. He succeeds, for the most part, thanks to the film's fluid energy. Tatum is also believable as an embattled soldier and a bitter son.
My main complaint is the absence of a woman character. Where are the strong mothers, powerful sisters, or heck, even vengeful goddesses? In the end, "The Eagle" dares to be a character study but it morphs into an entertaining swashbuckling adventure.

Angered, the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of a wall to seal off the territory; Hadrian's Wall became the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire - the edge of the known world. Driven to become a brilliant soldier and now given command of a small fort in the southwest, Marcus bravely leads his troops during a siege. Commended by Rome for his bravery, yet discharged from the army because of his severe wounds, Marcus convalesces, demoralized, in the villa of his Uncle Aquila (Donald Sutherland), a retired army man. When Marcus impulsively gets a young Briton's life spared at a gladiatorial contest, Aquila buys the Briton, Esca (Jamie Bell), to be Marcus' slave. Marcus is dismissive of Esca, who harbors a seething hatred of all things Roman. Yet Esca vows to serve the man who has saved his life. Hearing a rumor that the Eagle has been seen in a tribal temple in the far north, Marcus is galvanized into action, and sets off with Esca across Hadrian's Wall. But the highlands of Caledonia are a vast and savage wilderness, and Marcus must rely on his slave to navigate the region. When I was the Eagle Troop commander 1998-1999 the world didn't have the technology available for everyone to have a video camera on their phone. This video was pieced together from over 12 months of training events at Fort Carson, Colorado and the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. That year Eagle Troop took top honors in everything we competed in. We were literally the best Cavalry Troop in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. I had this short clip made by a guy that produced wedding videos as a second business. As I said, the technology back then was nowhere near what it is today. Synopsis
Vladimir Dubrovski, un lieutenant de l'armée russe, attire l'attention de la Tsarine Catherine II. Comme il rejette ses avances et tente de l'éviter, elle délivre un mandat d'arrestation... mort ou vif. Au même moment Vladimir apprend que son père est mort et que ses terres sont aux mains du diabolique Kyrilla Troekouroff. Vladimir met un masque noir sur son visage et devient le hors-la-loi L'Aigle noir.
