List of education ministries

An education ministry is a national or subnational government agency politically responsible for education. Various other names are commonly used to identify such agencies, such as Ministry of Education, Department of Education, Ministry of Public Education, and so forth, and the head of such an agency may be a Minister of Education or Secretary of Education. Such agencies typically address educational concerns such as the quality of schools or standardization of curriculum. The first such ministry ever is considered to be the Commission of National Education (pl. Komisja Edukacji Narodowej, lt. Edukacinė komisija) founded in 1773 in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Africa

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (New Brunswick)

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is a part of the Government of New Brunswick. It is charged with the administration of the New Brunswick public education system. Its primary and secondary schools are divided into 7 districts in separate units; 4 anglophone districts and 3 francophone districts.

On May 14, 1998 it also took over responsibility for universities and community colleges however community colleges were later moved to the Department of Training and Employment Development on March 23, 2000. On February 14, 2006 it was returned to its pre-1998 configuration with responsibility for just primary and secondary schools when universities were moved to the new Department of Post-secondary Education and Training.

In October 2010, it took responsibility for early childhood education from the Department of Social Development and its name changed from the Department of Education to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

United States Department of Education

The United States Department of Education (ED or DoED), also referred to as the ED for (the) Education Department, is a Cabinet-level department of the United States government. Recreated by the Department of Education Organization Act (Public Law 96-88) and signed into law by President Jimmy Carter on October 17, 1979, it began operating on May 4, 1980.

The Department of Education Organization Act divided the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare into the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services. The Department of Education is administered by the United States Secretary of Education. It is by far the smallest Cabinet-level department, with about 5,000 employees.

Nomenclature

The agency's official abbreviation is "ED", and not "DOE", which refers to the United States Department of Energy. It is also often abbreviated informally as "DoED".

Establishment

A previous Department of Education was created in 1867 but was soon demoted to an Office in 1868. As an agency not represented in the president's cabinet, it quickly became a relatively minor bureau in the Department of the Interior. In 1939, the bureau was transferred to the Federal Security Agency, where it was renamed the Office of Education. In 1953, the Federal Security Agency was upgraded to cabinet-level status as the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
