Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on 'The Music Scene' he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from "one basic beat and building off it" (the standard hip hop model), he has begun stringing together multiple beats and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising and satisfying pieces of music. As he himself puts it, "I made each song a little more of a musical journey than anything I have ever done before."

Blockhead's ambition to "tell stories without words" is evident from opener 'It's Raining Clouds' onwards. The tune starts off as classic downtempo and ends up almost drum and bass, the music having changed and fallen away, echoing back through itself and feeding into previous themes at least three times - it's an epic in an album of epics.

The Music
The Music were an English alternative rock band, formed in Kippax, Leeds in 1999. Comprising Robert Harvey (vocals, guitar), Adam Nutter (lead guitar), Stuart Coleman (bass) and Phil Jordan (drums), the band came to prominence with the release of their debut album, The Music, in 2002. The band released two further studio albums, Welcome to the North (2004) and Strength in Numbers (2008), before parting ways in 2011.
Career
The Music all met at Brigshaw High School, except Phil Jordan who went to Garforth, and began playing in 1999 as Insense. In 2001 the song "Take the Long Road and Walk It" circulated as a demo before being released by Fierce Panda as a 1000-copies-only single, a rarity from its day of release. Around this time the NME and Steve Lamacq were describing them as the best unsigned band in Britain. The band were quickly signed by Hut, who released their first EP You Might as Well Try to Fuck Me.
In 2002, following another EP (The People) they released their eponymous début album which reached No. 4 in the UK album charts. Their début single was re-issued as part of a two-disc set to promote the album, and reached No. 14 in the singles chart. Two further singles from the album, "Getaway" and "The Truth is No Words" reached No. 26 and No. 18 respectively. June 2003 saw them filling in for an absent Zwan on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

Ninja Tune
Ninja Tune is an independent record label based in London, England, UK. It has a satellite office in Los Angeles, California, US covering the whole of North America. It was founded by Matt Black and Jonathan More, better known as Coldcut and managed by Peter Quicke and others. Music Week has written that Ninja Tune is one of the most credible independent labels in the UK.
Inspired by a visit to Japan, Black & More primarily created Ninja Tune in 1990 as a means to escape the creative control of major labels, and to act as a vehicle to release music of a more underground nature, free from the restraints that were put on them via their brief stints with Arista and Big Life. The label has been called "visionary" and "reliably excellent". It has signed a diverse range of uncompromising artists, encourages interactive technology, embraces the audio-visual world, has created its own publishing company, Just Isn’t Music, and finds innovative uses of software.
The label’s first releases —the first five volumes of DJ Food's Jazz Brakes— were produced by Coldcut in the early 1990s, and celebrated by the music press and beat aficionados. They were composed of instrumental sample-based cuts that led the duo to help pioneer new instrumental hip hop beats genres (alongside the Mo'Wax label and Ninja Tune artists such as Funki Porcini, The Herbaliser and DJ Vadim) and, to this day, are recognized as being indispensable tools for DJs.

Music
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Blockhead - The Music Scene (2009) New York hip hop producer Tony Simon aka Blockhead returns with his third and best instrumental album for Ninja Tune. Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on The Music Scene he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from one basic beat and building off it (the standard hip hop model), he has begun stringing together multiple beats and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising and satisfying pieces of music. As he himself puts it, I made each song a little more of a musical journey than anything I have ever done before. Blockheads ambition to tell stories without words is evident from opener Its Raining Clouds onwards. The tune starts off as classic downtempo and ends up almost drum and bass, the music having changed and fallen away, echoing back through itself and feeding into previous themes at least three times. Its an epic in an album of epics. At the heart of the record is the remarkable The Daily Routine an exploration of drug addiction (based around a found recording of drug addicts arguing), Blockhead says its pretty much the creepiest song Ive ever made. Four Walls, meanwhile aims a musical broadside at the current vogue for autotune. Which One Of You Jerks Drank My Arnold Palmer is huge ambient space rock hip hop. The Prettiest Seaslug is Bahia-beat on opium. Tricky Turtle begins as afro-blaxpoitation, turns into a voodoo orgy and ends somewherte in the Middle East. Farewell Spaceman starts off sounding like an outtake from Bewitched and ends as an ecstatic, chugging flight off into the stars. While The Music Scene represents a development in Blockheads work, he still holds true to his basic beliefs about music and rhythm. When not working on his new album he has been providing production for Aesop Rock, DJ Signify, Joanna Erdos and many more, plus remixes for Yameen and Chin Chin, amonst others. Whereas the music scene is a bastardized version of something that was already watered down, Blockheads The Music Scene, like his career as a whole, is the opposite of that. By re-working, chopping and melding samples, by blending them together, Blockhead restores rather than dilutes their purity.

Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on 'The Music Scene' he elevates his craft to another level. New York hip hop producer Tony Simon aka Blockhead returns with his third and best instrumental album for Ninja Tune.
Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on The Music Scene he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from one basic beat and building off it (the standard hip hop model), he has begun stringing together multiple beats and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising and satisfying pieces of music. As he himself puts it, I made each song a little more of a musical journey than anything I have ever done before.
Blockheads ambition to tell stories without words is evident from opener Its Raining Clouds onwards. The tune starts off as classic downtempo and ends up almost drum and bass, the music having changed and fallen away, echoing back through itself and feeding into previous themes at least three times. Its an epic in an album of epics.
At the heart of the record is the remarkable The Daily Routine an exploration of drug addiction (based around a found recording of drug addicts arguing), Blockhead says its pretty much the creepiest song Ive ever made. Four Walls, meanwhile aims a musical broadside at the current vogue for autotune. Which One Of You Jerks Drank My Arnold Palmer is huge ambient space rock hip hop. The Prettiest Seaslug is Bahia-beat on opium. Tricky Turtle begins as afro-blaxpoitation, turns into a voodoo orgy and ends somewherte in the Middle East. Farewell Spaceman starts off sounding like an outtake from Bewitched and ends as an ecstatic, chugging flight off into the stars.
While The Music Scene represents a development in Blockheads work, he still holds true to his basic beliefs about music and rhythm. When not working on his new album he has been providing production for Aesop Rock, DJ Signify, Joanna Erdos and many more, plus remixes for Yameen and Chin Chin, amonst others. Whereas the music scene is a bastardized version of something that was already watered down, Blockheads The Music Scene, like his career as a whole, is the opposite of that. By re-working, chopping and melding samples, by blending them together, Blockhead restores rather than dilutes their purity.
