Kisenosato stays on track to yokozuna
The Japan News While ozeki Kotoshogiku was sent to his second defeat, yokozuna Hakuho and ozeki Kisenosato emerged unscathed after the second day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday at Nagoya’s Aichi Prefectural Gym.
Hakuho used a little sleight of hand before shuffling out No. 2 maegashira Okinoumi, moving him 11 wins away from 1,000 for his career in the uppermost makuuchi division and chalking up win No. 701 as a yokozuna.
Kisenosato, aiming for a first career tournament title that he needs for promotion to yokozuna, was sent back on the jump-off by sekiwake Kaisei, but he stopped the charge and eventually forced the bulky Brazilian over the edge for his ninth win in nine career meetings between the two.
The two other yokozuna, Harumafuji and Kakuryu, both chalked up their second wins, with the former slapping down No. 1 maegashira Tochiozan and the latter marching out the other top maegashira Mitakeumi.
The two ozeki who suffered losses on the opening day, Goeido and Kotoshogiku, had mixed results against the two komusubi.
Goeido had Kotoyuki backpedaling from the start, then stepped aside and slapped him down to even his record at 1-1. Kotoshogiku’s bout with Takayasu followed a similar pattern, except that the ozeki was the one who flopped to the dirt to remain winless.
