Gunma Prefecture (群馬県, Gunma-ken) is a prefecture of Japan located in the northwest corner of the Kantō region on the main Honshu island. Its capital is Maebashi.
Japan was without horses until around the fifth century CE. The ancient province of Gunma was a center of the horsebreeding and trading activities for the newly immigrated continental peoples. The arrival of horses and the remains of horse-tackle coincides with the arrival of a large migration from the mainland. From this point forward, the horse became a vital part of Japanese military maneuvers, quickly displacing the older Yayoi tradition of fighting on foot.
When Mount Haruna erupted in the late 6th century, Japan was still in the pre-historical phase (prior to the importation of the Chinese writing system during the Nara period). The Gunma Prefectural archaeology unit in 1994 was able to date the eruption through zoological anthropology at the corral sites that were buried in ash.
In the past, Gunma was joined with Tochigi Prefecture and called Kenu Province. This was later divided into Kami-tsu-ke (Upper Kenu, Gunma) and Shimo-tsu-ke (Lower Kenu, Tochigi). The area is sometimes referred to as Jomo (上毛, Jōmō). For most of Japanese history, Gunma was known as the province of Kozuke.
Japan is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. The Gunma Prefecture is nicely located in the middle of Honshu island in Japan. There are many delightful tourist destinations that the Gunma Prefecture has to offer like, Takasaki, Mount Haruna, Kusatsu Onsen, Tamamura, Mt Akagi and many more.
Explore Tochigi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVG1xeupIXU In today's vlog I drove for the first time in Japan! I drove to the Gunma prefecture and for the first time had to drive down super narrow roads LOL. Felt super uncomfortable doing it but at least we made it safely haha. Also enjoyed hotsprings (onsen) in the Gunma prefecture. Come April, it's spring in full bloom in Minakami-machi, Gunma Prefecture. A Sakura tree begins to bloom in the town. I can enjoy the Sakura tree until from April to the beginning of May. In Norn Ski Resort, narcissus flowers blossom in abundance.
Located off Route 33 near Mt. Haruna will you find one of Japan's (famed?) Melody Roads. Melody Roads are stretches of roads with grooves in it. Depending on the depth and cut of the groove, it can be arranged to make sounds from running over them. It's recommended to run over them at 50km/h to hear the song at normal speed. obviously, if you go faster or slower, it'll slow the tempo of the song. anyways, theres a lot more info about melody roads on wikipedia. BTW, i know its been a loooong time since ive up'ed a proper video. theres projects in the queue....its just a matter of putting it together. -sigh-
Minakami-machi is filled with fruit gardens of all kinds and all seasons. In September, families can enjoy harvesting grapes at Doleland Minakami. Takaragawa Hot Spring - Ousenkaku and Tanigawa Hot Spring - Kinseikan are very popular open-air hot spring baths. At the glass workshop in Tsukiyono Vidro Park, you can make your own, original glasses.
It's August, and Minakami-machi is in the height of summer. The mountain stream is full of spirited children who came to play in the water. When they catch trouts, they grill them with salt and eat them on the spot. However, when you reach the Tenjintaira station on the ropeway, there is already a nip of fall in the air. The trail up the mountain bustles with mountain climbers consisting of men and women of all ages.
I made this video in partnership with Japan National Tourism Organization - as a part of the #MyJapanStory contest. (http://myjapanstory.jnto.go.jp/en/ ) Share your own beautiful Japan experiences on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook with #MyJapanStory for a chance to win great prizes! Everyone sees Japan as a destination in which to visit more destinations. But, I don't really do "Destination" tourism... Between from 2008 to 2013, I lived in Gunma Prefecture, I drove a Nissan Silvia S14, and found that the best parts of the prefecture, and in fact, the country, are more often than not, the places that are a bit of a drive past the typical destinations, and the best experiences you can have, are the ones that you share with the amazing people you meet on the long, winding road. ...
