Worlds most dangerous and deadly Flash flood in Bagasra and Amreli district Gujarat - 24 JUN 2015
It's a scene of complete devastation in
Amreli, which has been ravaged by the worst
Flash floods in 90 years.
Almost 600 out of the total 838 villages of the district are inundated and a massive rescue and relief operation has been launched by the state government, the
Indian Air Force (
IAF),
National Disaster Response Force (
NDRF) to shift stranded people to safer locations.
On Thursday, four IAF choppers made 19 sorties to drop 15,
000 food packets for villagers, many of whom were stranded on their terraces since Wednesday. Over 400 villages are completely inaccessible as roads have been washed away due to flash floods in Shetrunji river and its tributaries.
The rail connectivity to the district was also snapped after a bridge collapsed near Gavadka and track was washed away near Borala village near
Savarkundla.
Vast tracts of land are still submerged under water and officials engaged in the relief work say that it will take at least 20 days for the situation to normalize. "However, if there is rain, the situation is going to worsen," an official told
TOI.
Senior citizens in Amreli said that this was the worst-ever flood in 90 years.
The communication network has also collapsed in the district and over 400 villages have no electricity as 705 poles have been damaged. "We have started the work to restore power but it's not possible many villages to conduct repairs," a
Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (
PGVCL) said.
The condition of farmers is extremely miserable. They have not only lost their crops and seeds sown after initial rainfall but also lost their livestock. Thousands of domestic cattle have died across the district. In 35-km stretch from Amreli to Savarkundla, people spotted as many as 70 dead cattle.
Chief minister Anandiben Patel, who carried out an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas, said financial assistance will be extended to all affected farmers after assessing the damage to crops.
Bhadresh Vamja, sarpanch of Sadli village, said, "Many farmers may never be able to sow again as flash floods have resulted in massive soil erosion in their fields."
Of the total 5
.30 lakh hectares of cultivable area, sowing was done on 3.48 lakh hectare, most of which has been washed away.
"With farms washed away and cattle dead, there is nothing that farmers can fall back on for livelihood," said
Babu Sojitra from Bavadi village.
AIR correspondent reports that 13 people died when two houses collapsed in
Nani Vabhaniya village near
Bagasara town of
Amreli district.
Apart from this, 3 people died in
Bhavnagar district, 2 died in Gaondal in
Rajkot district and and 3 people died in
Surat district in different rain related incidents.
NDRF and
Airforce have been pressed in to the service for rescue and relief works in Amreli district. Additional companies of
State Reserve Police force have been sent in all flood affected areas.More than
100 people have been airlifted in Amreli district while one thousand people have been evacuated in
Surat due to flood and heavy rain fall.
